File I/O And Registry :: Reading Text From Non-.txt Files

Apr 24, 2009

An application that my company uses stores report files with a .dat extension for use with their software. These files can be opened in notepad and the basic report information can be seen as text. I am attempting to write an app that opens and reads data from these .dat files and displays it in a checked listbox. My hangup thus far is that I can't figure out how to read the data from the .dat files since they are not .txt files. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Files From A Large Directory?

Jul 15, 2009

I wrote a cleanup program to go through some directories and delete files based on if the creation date is older than say 6 months. It works fine with some of the directories I have that contain around a few thousand small files. However, there is one directory (that contains small backup files from another program) that is loaded with over 300,000 files and it locks up on me as soon as I read in the first file in that directory.I am convinced it is the directory has too many files in it to open it. The server that the directory is on is slow. It takes a half hour to open the directory while on the server itself. I know it will take forever to delete the amount of files I want to delete, but I don't understand why it gets stuck and hangs there with no error message.Here is where I get stuck. Listbox1 is the directory I'm attempting to access

For Each selectFile In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(ListBox1.Items.Item(Count), FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "*.*")
compFile = Path.GetFileName(selectFile)

File I/O And Registry :: Reading TAB Delimited File Using MS Text Driver

I am trying to import a TAB (NOt comma) delimited text file into a DataGridView. The following code works fine if I have a comma separated file. All I have to do is change the FMT to "Delimited".It just does not work with FMT=TabDelimited. All columns are read into single datatable column. The text file is ANSI text and I have double checked to make sure Tabs are tabs and not spaces, even exported a sample Tab Delimited file from Excel.Can this even be done using Text Driver? [code]

File I/O And Registry :: Text File Reading And Writing?

I have just recently been using VB 2010 after using VB5. I have noticed a lot of changes. The problem I have is that I wish to open and save text files to and from arrays in the background. I've attached what I would do in VB5. I have searched around, but all the examples I find use a Textbox instead of an array. Can anyone show me how I can do this with VB 2010?

Reading A Text From A Binary File, Changing And Saving?

May 4, 2009

I'm new to VB and trying to figure out how I can replace a bit of descriptive text in a binary file. I presume its binary as I cant open it with anything but a hex editor. I've changed the text (file description) in the hex editor and saved it fine but I'm unsure how I go about saving just the section of information I need. I can work out the saving bit later.In the attached file you'll see the highlighted bit I want to edit. I need to replace the whole line or the file corrupt but I can fill it up with null characters and the numbers are just

VS 2010 Reading Text File And Saving Content?

Aug 18, 2011

I am trying to create a console application that allows me to read the contents of a text file and saving the data by specific name in a set of files. For example, the text file I am going to read is a tab delimited file. Some content of the file includes full name, school, location, and whatnot. I want to save the content by school name in a set of files that have the school names. In this case, everyone that attends "Central" will be saved in a file named Central.txt.Everyone that attends "Central Park" will be saved in a file named Central Park.txt.These are the sub procedures I came up with so far:

Readfile()
'Use StreamReader
WriteFile()

And I think I am on the right track of reading the text file:

Dim objStreamReader As StreamReader
Dim strLine As String
'Pass the file path and the file name to the StreamReader constructor.

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Text And Splitting To Arrays Then Echoing To Textboxes

Mar 1, 2010

I'm currently making a program that will be used to practice German. It reads from textfiles that have English words (noted by # prefix) and German words (noted by $ prefix). An example of this:

#hello $hallo
#good $gut
#evening $abends

The way it currently works is it loads a text file, finds all # and splits to an array called "English" and finds all $ and splits it to an array called "German" What I want it to now do is feed the "English" entries into textboxes on the left, and "German" onto textboxes on the right so I can then match them out and make a sort of memory game out of it. Unfortunately, I don't know how I would loop an array through multiple textboxes. Conveniently, the textboxes on the left have even numbers, and the ones on the right have odd. Is there a way to possibly find all evenly numbered textboxes and loop "English" array entries into them, and the same for "German"? I've realised this has now gotten a little convoluted, but hopefully somebody understands. I can screenshot the form for better explanation, and copy my existing source code if anybody wants it.

File I/O And Registry :: Recursively Edit Text Files In Sub Folders?

Jul 20, 2010

I found this code on here to open a text fille, do a find & replace then save the changes, and the code is in a loop that will do that to every file in a given folder. My question is I also have files in sub folders, and more sub folders, and i'm not sure how deep it goes. I want to recursivly go though all the sub folders and do this to all the files, not just the files directly in the main folder.

Here is the code so far:

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Multiple Keys From The Registry?

Aug 27, 2008

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.

I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.

I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.

In this key:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.

My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.

Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?

I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

Reading Data From API Feed And Saving Into Files

Mar 17, 2011

I am reading data from an API feed and saving the chunks into files. When the files reach 10 MB I start a new file and write to that file. What happens now is that an entry (<entry></entry>) can get cut off at the end of a file and continues into the new file. I try and reconstruct the files by taking the last entry and combining it with the first entry of the next file but this is tedious and was wondering for better suggestion on handling the data transmission and file creation.

The data stream is of variable sizes and where one request can return 60 MB of data the next can be as little as 2MB. I know the data stream will end with a token </feed>but my problem is the cut off data in between. I guess I could just make the max size really large and then hope the data is never more than that but then I have to work with large text files and reading in and parsing would be a problem.

timestamp = DateTime.Now
numbytesread = responseStream.Read(bufferread, 0, BUFFER_SIZE)
If numbytesread > 123 Then
'timestamp = DateTime.Now
responseData = Encoding.UTF8.GetString

File I/O And Registry :: Binary File Primer - Read The Nth Record Without Reading The Whole File?

May 4, 2009

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.

Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file

Some specific questions:

Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?

Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

File I/O And Registry :: Saving For With Dynamic Controls

Sep 13, 2009

I'm working on a kind of database program. What it does is, after an user fills in a couple of textboxes and hits an "Add" button, it creates a series of textboxes, and places these in the same form. After that, and here's where I have the problem, I want to be able to save the form, saving not only what each dynamically added textbox says, but also it's location in the form.

Here's part of my work up to now:
Code:
Public Class Form3
Dim k As Integer = 1
Dim i As Integer = 0
Dim j As Integer = 0
Dim x As Integer = 8
Dim y As Integer = 40

NOTE: Age, name, last name, tel and type are all the fields that the user has to fill in, they are textboxes.

File I/O And Registry :: Saving Data From Class Properties?

May 28, 2009

I currently have a class

Code:
Public Class Customer
Public Property AccountNumber() As String
Public Property PMDue() As String

[code]....

Account Class is initialized as new customer. To save the data from each property in the Account Class, I'm currently looping thru the properties each time Account obtains new data. I tried to simplify the process by the following line...

Code:
CustomerStreamToWrite.WriteLine(Account)

This does not work as written. I figured it would be much faster. It did not write out the property data. It saved "WindowsApplication1.Customer" Not exactly what I wanted. Is there a method to get it to save the properties in a written out style by just using the class name?

File I/O And Registry :: AVI Header - Program To Download And Play AVI Files The Files Are Large In Size And Long Time Wise

Dec 11, 2011

I wrote a program to download and play AVI files the files are large in size and long time wise. I have the files playing as they are being downloaded but i can't see how long the file is or seek reliably. i was reading that the AVI headers are in the last 512kb of the AVI file *why would't they put it at the start* lol so my question is is there a way to download the last 512Kb of the file i'm downloading. i have the Bytes Read and Length of the file while its downlaoding i'm just not sure where to go from there, or how to do it atleast. If i had the length in time of the Avi file i could set the trackbar to be able to seek properly. or if someone has an idea how i could get the time of the video by using fps and some math i could prob do it that way too but idk how i would tell how i can find how many kb are in the fps i'm sure it changes so think that way is't going to be reliable. how to get the last 512kb would be the best option not sure if it can be done even.
