Jun 7, 2011code snippet that would allow a progress bar to track the input of a text file? Normally I would not bother with this, but the text files are > 10,000 lines long, which is noticable even on a fast machine. The number of lines is variable, so I would assume that one would not use a fixed value to calculate when the progress bar goes 100%.

This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.

Aug 27, 2008I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.
I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.

there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?
I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

Create Log File To Track Progress And Populate Controls Via Text File Or XML File?
May 22, 2009I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.
I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.
In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:

Apr 3, 2011my final year project title is monitoring weight changes in digital scale / indicator.i bought one digital scale online from A&D in order to test out my system.however unlikely other device (GSM MODEM, RFID...) there are no drivers or libraries (DLL) from this device.. with only the digital scale and (rs232 9-pins to usb convertor i bought) i was like lost wondering how to get communicate with the device.i have been search around in the internet for similar post.. but there are most likely dealing with the data receiving already. is there any journals or manuals for references? i willing to study over this and not simply ask for full codings.

I'm using a listview in my application.(view=details) I assign an image list to listview.smallimagelist. when user try to sort the listview by clicking the column header i use the imageindex property to set an icon for that column header, this works fine. When user clicks another column to sort the listview by that, I use listview.columns(PreviousColumnIndex).imageindex=-1 to remove the sort order icon from the previously selected columnheader, but it does not remove the picture from the previous columnheader. How should I remove the icon(picture) from the previous column header?

When visualizing the tab control the & will become an _ (underscore) for the next character - in this case "C"

VS 2008 Listview ColumnHeader Sort Indicator?
Jun 21, 2011After a long time searching, I am still facing an issue with my listview column header I am trying to add a sort indicator (a small 16x16 arrow, next to the column title - looks quite good).
- My listview is in Ownerdraw mode for : Items & Subitems for a couple of reasons
- So far, I was letting the system do the job for the header (e.drawdefault = true)
I managed to add very easily the arrow using the e.graphics class, right after the e.drawdefault=true, and it is actually working good.

As you can see, I'm simply using a resource, and am forcing it to 16x16 with a custom location x=34 pixels y=2pixels My issue comes with the following :

The arrow wont draw Of course the sort indicator will sometime be on the 2nd column etc.. That's why I need to use the column header's bounds.I can already hear you saying : if you do not owner draw, you can't..But why is it working with a static location (, 34, 2, 16, 16) ans not starting from another static location (e.bounds.x) How can I fix that ? I cant find previous issues similar to that one over the internet.
Points of interest :
- I tryed to load the int value e.bounds.x into a variable before, using that instead of e.bounds.x but it's all the same.
- Using the imagelist is not an option, As you can tell from the screenshot, I am already using images for headers.. the sort indicator is coming as another image
- Using ">" or "<" in the header's text is not an option either........ (sorry pal It does not look good at all..)
- Drawing the header totally in owner draw mode would be an option, but it looks quite hard to do (need to manage the "rounded" header style of the system, the mouse over - small yellow line rounded on the sides in WinXp, the click effect....).

May 4, 2009I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

Feb 3, 2010I am working on a VB Console Application that takes an Autocad drawing type DWG and converts it to a PDF using a shell command that calls a third party application. In this case, acmecadconverter.exe from www.dwgtool.com. Then the PDF that is created needs a unique watermark, so I call a second application for that called pdftk.exe from www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/.
Everything works as intended, except when I try file names that contain spaces. The file system object does not tolerate spaces in the drawing file name. For instance, the following command gives me a system.io.filenotfoundexception...
My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile("Test Flowchart1.dwg", "Test~Flowchart1.dwg")
It's the same problem for all of my File System commands. Either file not found or invalid arguments.
