Find Variable Characters In String?
Apr 9, 2010
How can I find variables in a string of text and display them.
For instance usually I could use the * or ? characters (in ol' batch files) to mark variable character positions.
For example, I am looking for a string "Happy" & ???? & "Birthday" in a file looking for 4 characters between happy and birthday. Is there a simple way to find these characters utilizing a variable or is there a different way to do it? Would I have to declare?? as 4 specific character spaces that need to be displayed?

I need to return everything between the 2 dashes:
"xxx-12345-xxx"
Here's my conditions:
Sometimes the middle part may contain more than 5 characters, so it could look like this: "xxx-12345AB-xxx" Sometimes there's no second dash, so a string could look like this: "xxx-12345"

Using VB or C#, I am getting a string of variable length from the database. This information is sensitive information that only certain users will be able to see.I have two cases that will use the same logic (I think).scenario 1: replace all characters with xscenario 2: replace all characters with x except the last 4 characters (assume length > 4 - this check is being done).I thought that this would be easiest using Regex.Replace(input, pattern, replacestring). As opposed to a lot of string handling with substrings and forcing a length of 'x's.

I know how to declare a variable, a function, to write a string of characters or numbers (I still looking in tutorials and depict from there what i need to know) but...WHAT I DONT KNOW is how to USE them? At "what" or "how" are you thinking when you make a program? I try for SOME LOooNG TIME to understand but I think im too stupid to understand from pages on the net (or i dont find THAT tutorial who can explain right for me).I try a lot of programing languages starting with pascal,c,c++,darkbasic,alice, Visual-c,c#,c++,basic,php,even assembler, some programing zones in Excel and Word but from all of this i cant manage to understand the life behind the words.

I have an HTML string and in that string are certain variables that I need to replace with database values. The variable names are dynamic but all begin with the characters "@@" (just two ampersands, no quotes). Is there a way to get all the words in a string that start with "@@"? I'm assuming you would use regular expressions, but not sure how to begin.

This code is being fired on mouse click event of a button control. This is a snippet of my code there are more filtering after but here is what should be changed.

I'm having issues with finding something in list, and removing the item, ignoring the case of characters in string.
The code goes:
Dim listItems As New List(Of String)
Dim pattern As String = "AbC"
Dim array() As String
array = {"ABC", "abc"}
listItems.AddRange(array)
Here I'd like to remove all items from listItems, that are abc, no matter what case single characters of item are, including mixed case items. So in this example, every items should be removed
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))
If I change pattern to match the case of item, then item #2 gets removed:
pattern = "abc"
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))
How can I find item in listItems, ignoring the case characters in pattern?

I need to create a console program that allows you to enter a string, of which is then outputted in reverse.
Sample:
Input: Diewas
Output: saweiD
Apparently I need to find out about strings and will also need to use a loop.

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I have written a program that uses an array of the english alphabet and Morse code. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. Do i need to Parse the string of characters one at a time, and then run it through a loop like i have created?

I have a listbox where each line contains a short 3-4 character model number followed by a tab and then the product name the model number corresponds to. I also have a textbox which I am using to search the listbox.
The code I am using so far works somewhat, just not exactly how I would like. If I enter search text it will highlight the results in the listbox but only for the first characters, is there anyway to search the text of an entire line (index) of a listbox?
Right now I am using the following:
Private Sub txtSearch_TextChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles txtSearch.TextChanged
ListBox.SelectedIndex = ListBox.FindString(txtSearch.Text)
End Sub

On my windows form i have textbox where the user will be entering XML data. What i want to be able to achieve is to search for a field called DESCRIPTION= and check that the text included contains certain characters?How can i get the tool to first find the DESCRIPTION= and test the characters contained with the " (quote marks)?
For example:
DESCRIPTION="hello & welcome"
I want my tool to look for certain characters like < > and & and when it finds one to have a error msg pop up and inform the user that the character will then be escaped for it's HTML entity, i.e & becomes &?

Public Sub Page_Load() Dim Id As String Id = Trim (Request.QueryString("Id")) End Sub Dim mp3text as string url... & Id & ".mp3" My goal is to make the mp3text variable have a string that is: url...(If Id is 7) It is for some reason not connecting up correctly. I checked what string it is outputting and this is what it is giving: url...It is missing the Id content.

The code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"
