Finding Name Of Exception Method?
Mar 23, 2010Is it possible to collect name of method, line, file etc in which exception occurred for logging purposes? I have heard its possible using System.Diagnostics.StackTrace but not sure how.

View 3 RepliesI have the following code for finding factorials:
Private Shared Function Factorial(ByVal Number As Long) As Long
If Number = 0 Then
Return 1
Else
Return Number * Factorial(Number - 1)
End If
End Function
It usually results in an overflow. It only works if I start with something small like 4. I have to work with starting numbers such as 30-60. I thought changing the value type to LONG would prevent this problem. This is VB.net just for reference.
Similar in concept to Math.Abs() - I'm looking for a function that when given a positive integer will return the same integer. If given a negative, will return zero. So:
f(3) = 3
f(0) = 0
f(-3) = 0
Yes, this is simple enough to write on my own but I'm wondering if the .NET Math class already has this built in or if the same can be achieved by cleverly chaining a few Math.* calls?
what I am trying to do is, when a ListView loads, for the code to check the entry in column one, and then return a message box if the column contains a specific date.
I am using:
SUB I DONT KNOW THE METHOD TO INSERT THIS INTO. I NEED IT CHECKED WHEN THE LISTVIEW CHANGES
If lvuPreviousJobs.SelectedItems(0).SubItems(2).Text = "31/12/9999" Then
{
MsgBox("TEST")

is there a method check the number of records in data reader? like the count of rows. ?
View 2 RepliesI'm currently working on trying to improve the amount and quality of exception handling I do in my code and one thing that I am trying to figure out how to do is retry a method if it fails.
The an example of the circumstances when I would want to do this is for SqlExceptions. One of our clients has a poor network that means that occasionally connecting to SQL Server times out, but if we try again immediately afterwards it will work perfectly. While I could possibly call the method from itself, I would rather not do that just in case there is a permanent error and then we'll get into a infinite loop, which is not what we want.
I was wondering whether anyone has any advice on how may be a good way of going about dealing with problems like this.[cod]e...
i am using OleDbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() to insert data into the database: [code]And there is a conversion exception that only shows up in the last line: error converting datatype varchar to smallint..I'd like to know if it's the normal behavior, and how do i know where the conversion problem occurs.[code]i've found this line through commenting every line and uncommenting some, this one gives me the above said exception. bjNFe.idMunFato Gerador is a string and gives me "error converting datatype varchar to smallint" too

Java forces a calling method to implement exception handling where it calls another method that thorws an exception.
Does VB.Net have the same mechanism?
I have a windows form that gets data from a scale via the serial port. Since I need the operator to be able to cancel the process I do the get data process on a second thread. The data collection process gets multiple readings from the scale one at a time. The form has a label that needs to be updated with information specific to each reading.
I call the method to get the data from the scale with this code.
Dim ad As New readALine(AddressOf thisScale.readALine)
Dim ac As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.GetDataCallback)
Dim iar As IAsyncResult = ad.BeginInvoke("", ac, ad)
The delegate for the readALine method is defined in the UI code.
Delegate Function readALine(ByVal toSend As String) As String
The GetDataCallback method:
Private Sub GetDataCallback(ByVal ia As IAsyncResult)
.
.
.
lblInstructions.Text = _thisMeasure.dt.Rows(_currRow - 1).Item("cnt") & ":"
lblInstructions.Refresh()
.
.
.
End Sub
I get the exception on the "lblInstructions.Text =" statement. I thought the GetDataCallback method was part of the UI thread so don't understand why I'm getting the exception. I know this could probably be rewritten using a BackgroundWorker and it's appropriate events but for now would like to understand why this isn't working as expected. The application was written originally in VS2003 and just recently upgraded to VS2008.
I am trying to implement a solution for updating form controls without using a delegate.
Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.Runtime.CompilerServices
Public Module MyInvoke

I get a cross threading error as though i didnt even use this method:Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'ComboBox1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
I am using .net 2.0 and I am getting an exception of system is out of memory. My existing function takes datatable as input parameter which contains little bit large data (eg. more than 35000 rows) and in that function I am appending some xml node data and atlast I am returning the stringbuilder as a object.

I am facing an amazing problem in my application. On my Developement server when I am running my application, then there is one function where I am trying to put whole stringbuilder contents in a string object. This Function is used for paging the reports. For that I am using a method of Stringbuilder.tostring() and when I chek the value of this statement (stringbuilder.tostring()) it shows no such interface is supported, which later on throws exception of system is out of memory. Here i am using .net 2.0 framework and sql server 2005 database. But when I run the application on stagging server then there is no such exception thrown.[code]
View 3 RepliesIt is possible to catch an exception and throw a new exception which wraps the first exception as an inner exception: [URL] Also, if I call a function and it throws a certain error, but I catch it, will the calling code's catch handler execute? If so, and it is of a higher exception type, is this not wrapping the exception? eg I can throw exception ex of type IndexOutOfRange, log it but rethrow, catch a higher up exception and do something, or I can throw a new exception and wrap an inner exception like:

I have a large project where we have 2-3 dll projects that are converted from VB6 to VB.NET. We have fixed all the issues that caused compilation errors, and most of obvious issues in running, so now we have basically a program up and running. The exe is created from scratch in VB.NET, using a lot of functionality from the converted dll's (including GUI forms). What I wonder is when I run the program in debug mode, I get a bunch of warnings in the "Immediate Window" saying:
A first chance exception of type 'System.Exception' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll
...and some of other type (but most of them in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll).I was wondering if this is common in projects converted from VB6, or if it is caused by bad design in our code...
When I try to create a instance of a COM class it throws an exception as Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to catch a user defined permission exception - i.e. a user does something their level of system access won't allow, permission exception is thrown. My problem is, the exception is caught and then rethrown as a genertic System.Exception.Is there any way I can deduce the original exception type, without resorting to string comparisons, like if ex.ToString.Contains("Permission denied"
View 2 RepliesWhen catching an exception in .net, you can have as many type-specific exception blocks as needed. But I usually try to have at least one "general" exception catch block. But is there a way to get the type of the "real" exception thrown that is caught by the generic exception handler, perhaps using reflection? For example, if I have
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of InvalidUser)
ProcessModuleLoadException(Me, ex)
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of SQLExceptions)
[code].....
i have about 20 possible exception messages that i want thrown when an error occurs.i need somthng like this when catching the exception
Try
' do domthing
Catch ex As CustomInvalidArgumentException
'do domthing

do i have to create a class that inherits from Exception for each type of exception?
I have the following code :
Imports System.Data.OleDb
Private Sub getData()
Dim connStr As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:
[Code].....
Exception Text : Can-not find installable ISAM.
Is there anyway to create a Custom Exception without inheriting System.Exception?
my reason is that they have a lot of methods which i do not wish my Class to have.
I have written a program which uses a SQL exception class and then use it show custom messages for the primary key violation. Also i want the primary key value that caused the violation. How can i get all the primary keys which generated the exception from the sqlexception object.[code]

Does calling the Dispose method on a Windows.Forms.Timer call it's Stop method? Or should I stop the timer before I dispose it?
View 5 RepliesI have a large problem with inheritance in vb.net. The problem is the following:
I have 2 forms => frmBase and frmChild
In frmBase i want to create a method Called StartWorking() and i want frmChild to inherit this method.
But here is the tricky thing: when frmChild.StartWorking is called i would like the following => without calling MyBase.StartWorking()
I want frmBase.StartWorking() to be executed first and after a test in frmBase.StartWorking if blnValue is true then frmChild.StartWorking has to be activated. if blnValue is false that frmChild.StartWorking cannot be activated.
I have nine pictures that I need to animate -I need to use the ToString method and a counter to concatenate a file name into a string variable from the Image.FromFile method. Once the counter reaches its maximum value, and the last picture is displayed, the counter should be reset to zero or one depending on how the first image file has been name. Also a static counter variable should be incremented in the time routine. what I have so far -- I know what I have to do; however, I just do not know how to code this properly.. Right now I have this going thru a button procedure but it needs to go through a timer.

Write an overload for every numeric type or if possible constrain a generic extension method to just numeric types.
