I'm having an issue where my main form isn't updating even though I see the event fire off. Let me explain the situation and share some of my code which I'm sure will be horrible since I'm an amateur. I created a class to take in the settings for running a process in the background. I add some custom events in that class so I could use that in my form instead of a timer.

In it's New() event, I'm performing a check to see whether a value stored in My.Settings is the same as the default value (I made sure the value wasn't!), if not then it will perform a RaiseEvent ValueChanged().
On my form, I have an instance of the class declared "Private Withevents ProgramSettings as New clsProgramSettings", I also have a handler "Private Sub DoSomething() Handles ProgramSettings.ValueChanged" declared.
When I run the program the form gets loaded, the instance is created, the RaiseEvent is called, but the handler is not receiving the event?
I tried "Private Withevents ProgramSettings as clsProgramSettings", then creating the instance in the Form.Load(), but still no success!?
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is there a problem with the IDE? I'm using VS 2010.
[VS 2010 Beta with .Net Framework 3.5]I've written a C# component to asynchronously monitor a socket and raise events when data is received. I set the VB form to show message boxes when the event is raised. What I've noticed is that when the component raises the event synchronously, the message box blocks the component code and locks the form until the user closes the message. When it's raised asynchronously, it neither blocks the code, nor locks the form.
What I want is a way to raise an event in such a way that it does not block the code, but is called on the same thread as the form (so that it locks the form until the user selects an option.)

Back in the VB6 days, I could count on frmWhatever_Resize() to be fired when a form is loaded. That doesn't still seem to be the case. Since my resize event is filled with all the code I want that adjusts the size and placement of things, I decided to just call it from the end of the form's load event. That has no affect. I'm guessing that the form isn't actually shown until form_load is finished?
is there some other event that is fired when a form is shown, so I can call my resize code there?
I have menu item, in which I have specified ShortCutKeys as "Del". On click of menu item I have called specific method. I have one form on which one textbox is placed. When I hit the "Del" key the same method which gets called on menu item click is fired. I want the default behaviour to be followed by the textbox. how to suppress the event to be fired and to achive the default behaviour of the textbox or other controls present on the form.

This is a rewrite of a similar winforms program that works just fine, except that it requires that the computer be logged into an account and the program started manually, which I can avoid by using it as a service.In the service I maintain a list of logged messages - basically just a string and a timestamp indicating that something has happened. (That list is shared out over a WCF service but I think that's immaterial, at least at the moment.) In my custom class I declare a public event, and elsewhere I raise that event. The problem in this case is that _pc_HandleEvent isn't ever being called. If I duplicate this setup in a regular winform program, everything works like it should. What am I doing wrong? How do I get a service to handle events raised from other classes?
I'm developing custom .net themes, and this relies on GDI+ -- I've been able to do this mainly with a ThemeBase released on another website. Now, however, whilst inheriting another control, I am Unable to inherit the ThemeBase which means I have to design the control a little differently -- which relies on me being able to manipulate the 'OnPaint' event of the control's design.The control's 'OnPaint' event is never fired, and I don't know why. If I put it in client form and in form_load set its value to 100, it will trigger the ValueChanged event. But if I set this value inside the constructor of UserControl1 the custom event won't trigger. How can I force it to do so ?whatever the technical reason, functionally it does make sense. If the object is initializing its value from some sources unknown to the client form and the client form has a textbox bound to this usercontrol value, it is sure convenient that it could refresh its textbox at any time including when the form loads just using one single event handler. Without this the client form has to create another initializer for this bound textbox at form load.

I have a BackgroundWorker in a vb.net program that is doing a lengthy data import routine. I want to modify its RunWorkerAsync method so that it fires a custom event on completion of the method. (So that a method in an automated process can respond to the event and resume its work). In a sense I want to 'extend' the RunWorkerAsync method to add an extra line of code--but I can't 'see' the code in the method (to just add the line raising the event) because BackgroundWorker is an MSDN class from Microsoft.The only solution that I can think of is to 'wrap' the background worker class in a wrapper that calls the .RunWorkerAsync method and then raises the event.

PS: Unfortunately, I'm automating some clanking legacy software and backgroundworker is used in many locations, so wrapping the backgroundworker will be a bit of work and may open bugs.

View 3 RepliesI have VC++ windows service running on a windows 2008 server which invokes a VB.NET exe with certain comandline parameters using CreateProcess(). VB.NET application has a form wich uses WithEvents to handle certain event. These event handlers are set in the Forms Load event. Problem here is when i debug the VB.NET application individually the application works fine, Forms Load event is getting fired. But when the exe is invoked via the windows service the form Load event does not get fired. Note the Forms Show function called and not showdialogue.
Why this was done i am not sure it was a VB 6.0 code which i have converted to VB.NET. But everything works fine when i debug the application individually on windows 2008 64 bit.
I have a datagridview that completely updates anytime changes are made to it. It is not connected to a source but rather the datagrid is filled when first launched.

If i check for TextChange event on the label and return the value in a msgbox it is set however nothing is shown on the form I'm calling COM's in a backgroundWorker so the form stays responsive as the COMS take quite a bit of time to handle certain parts and I dont want the form to look as if it hangs.

I'm using Systray for MDIform. The problem that I'm facing is MDIForm_MouseMove event sometimes doesn't get fired and therefore application gets stuck. After several click then all of a sudden it works for few clicks and then again get stuck.

Everything works fine except 1 thing: when i click the update command, the event just won't fire no matter what I do. the gridview goes into edit mode and the cancel button works fine. This has cost me over 2 days of googling but none of the solutions work. I used breakpoints to check if the code was executed, but it wasn't. If anybody has any experience in this:I believe the problem lies in the addhandler but it doesn't give any errors.I forgot to mention that the sql command was a test and sets the data in that field to 15, now it's 10, it works when i use a normal button or a static gridview.

For some reason, when I click the Button, it winds up in the btnLookup_Click event and displays the various messages, but it does not update the label (labLookup) text on the form. I never did custom events and would like to make a sub procedure execute via a custom event from another form that does not have the custom event defined. For example I would like to raise the event from my ok button in one form and have the event in the other form execute. How to set this up using code examples?
