View 2 RepliesI currently do all development work in VB.NET 2008, winforms; but within 18 months will be switching to WPF (for better or worse). I have had great success using Matthew MacDonald's "Pro NET 2.0 Windows Forms and Custom Controls in VB 2005" book. This is an excellent reference focused entirely on the development of custom controls in windows forms. ( Many of the controls that I use have to have a very specific UI look and feel, so they end up being custom.
I'm looking for pretty much the exact same thing, except focused on WPF. MacDonald has a new book coming out on WPF in general ,but not on custom controls. Books are my preferred reference material, but any good web references.
I'm having some problems with some API calls. I'm trying to return device driver information for a given device in device manager so I can access the available information and display it. I'm using a series of API calls which in turn populates a list with device driver objects associated with that device. The API calls fail. The problem is that I can't find any reference material online for these APIs so I can figure out what's wrong. [code]
View 1 RepliesI need to take a bill of material file from a customer in xml format and import it into our system. The problem I'm running into is that the terms they use to describe the types of material may vary. So, for example, if they are specifying a piece of threaded rod, they may call it "THREADED ROD", "THREADEDROD", "THRD ROD", "THRD'D ROD" or some other variation. Another example might be rectangular tubing. They might call it "RECTANGULAR TUBING", "RECT TUBING", "RECT TUBE", etc. There will be many types of material besides these two that I need to catch. Once the program determines what the material is it then branches to the appropriate subroutine to do further parsing. I was trying to think of a way to use regex or the "Like" or "Contains" operators to do this. Here is one way I thought of using "Select ... Case" but it isn't very flexible & will only catch hard-coded terms:
Select Case material
Case "THREADED ROD", "THRD ROD" 'etc...
Case "RECTANGULAR TUBE", "RECT TUBE", "RECT TUBING" 'etc...
End Select
I have an application that continously records audio for several hours. I want to be able to listen to recorded material but not necessarily in real time. I have tried to just copy the file being recorded to a new file with overwrite and the copy obviously gets done (filesize changes) but when I try to listen to the copied file my player just 'blinks' and nothing more happens. If I however close the recording, the copy also gets playable. My idea is that copying a file in use just creates another file in use. If this is the case how can I close the copied file?

View 1 RepliesI am new to VB, trying to create a tic-tac-toe game but none of the tic-tac-toe tutorials use 2 dimensional arrays. Since tic-tac toe is 3x3 I created 9 buttons and want either an X or an O to appear depending on where the user clicks. I want one set of instructions to handle the multiple buttons. I was told to use Case statements.
This is what I have so far. Not sure how much is right but hopefully it gives you an idea of what I am looking for.

View 2 RepliesI'm a Coldfusion Web Developer and I'm finding that in my local area, work for CF Devs has become extremely scarce. There were a handful of companies that were Coldfusion houses a few years ago and it appears most of them have moved away from CF development.I'm looking to expand my skillset to improve my employment outlook, and it appears that many of the web development positions that are available to me now are focused around .NET web development. The last time i took a look at .NET as a web development platform was way back during 2.0; where I found it to be poorly organized and extremely unfocused. Apparently somewhere along the line I missed the boat because that's where about 90% of the web development jobs in my area are now. I've done some searching on google to see if I can find a tutorial, something that's akin to hand-holding, and have come back dissapointed. So I'm turning to the SO community to ask for links and resources that might help better explain how .NET development works in a web development capacity, and for links to these resources so I can begin boning up my knowledge and start writing practice applications.

I am still trying to learn as much as possible about using visual basic 2008 to create card games, more precisely, video poker games. I am really looking for either a video tutorial or a book that focuses mainly on the steps needed to begin creating the game and leads me all the way to the end completion. The game can be very basic like a jacks or better game. Does anyone know of any tutorials, videos, or books that can help me? I have a few books that provide a slot machine style game and some other good examples, but really need something more with cards.

View 6 RepliesI am looking for a simple lesson plan or work sheet or tutorials to help me teach VB to pupils. It will be an introduction to programming for them so it must be easy. Online versions would be best. I am prepared to pay..And they do not like reading so it needs to have more images/videos to follow than words. Online versions would be best. I am prepared to pay.We have MS office at school so it would be good to teach them how to use VB in excel so I do not have to get a separate compiler or smallbasic? All I can find are too high a level tutorials online which are too wordy and do not have instructions/tasks set. I need simple worksheet/ instructions or examples for them to edit.I am sure Microsoft must have this and I am not having to re invent the wheel!
