View 2 RepliesHere is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

In a batch file that logs a user in to a network from a laptop connecting by VPN, the command window displays both the user's login name and the password. Is there some way I can prevent the password from being displayed? How do you hide characters in a command window?
View 7 RepliesWe don't want to get the password, we only want to store the user credentials so when they do work on the application we can apply their usernameto each operation and when they are done with an operation and do a digital signature by scanning their badge we want to compare the user's credentials with the stored credentials to ensure the user has logged in and is the current user.1. User 1 logs into the program using their username/password for windows.5

Our engineers use an application developed internally to perform risk assessments at a customers site. Sometimes on larger jobs a group of engineers will all carry out risk assessments together and will all need access to a single database file to all work on at the same time.

My ultimate goal is to allow users to select a file from a dialog as if they are uploading a file. Instead of file being saved to the server, a hyperlink will be generated from the file's path. This hyperlink will then be used on our intranet page in order to open the file located on our network share. Is there any practical way to accomplish this?I have tried both an HTML file type insert and .Net's FileUpload Control but neither will work since for security reasons the full path of the file is never accessible.

View 12 RepliesIn my application, the user clicks a single button and the program displays each network adapter description into a message box and then gets all the ip info for the workstation and places it into a text file and opens that text for reading. What I would really like for it to do would be to display all the network adapters into a single messagebox instead of messagebox for every adapter like it is currently doing. Here is the code I have on that button. Let me know if anyone needs more info or has any questions:

I have a .NET 2.0 *.dll that calls My.Computer.Network.Ping(). The *.dll is then run out of an *.exe via AppDomain.CreateDomain() and Invoke(). The problem is that this works just fine under Windows XP but under Windows 7, I get an exception saying that no network connection is available. I tried the Ping() call out of a small console application under Windows 7 and it works just fine.

I am writing some code as part of a framework for opening a file. The file is of custom type and should not be opened by more than one instance of my application. To stop multiple file opening I use a filestream to create a lock file and then keep said filestream open. This seems to work in preventing another instance of my application from opening the file ( as it will fail in recreating the lock stream in the files open code ) but if the file is on a network share and the network drops then the original application also can not access the file any more. The code to get the lock stream is as follows:
Try
' We need to keep this stream alive to prevent other applications gaining access to the lock
mLockStream = New FileStream(mLockPath, FileMode.CreateNew, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None)[code]....
In this I create the lock stream the first time round and then if another application tries to create it, it throws an exception and stops them from getting any further. This is kind of how it needs to work, unfortunately as I said, if this is done across a network and then the network connection is dropped for some reason then I can not delete the lock stream as I get an IOException telling me a process cannot access the file as it is open in another process ( which shouldn't be happening I don't think).
I have a problem I want to make a server and client where the server is password protected and will make the client display files/folders in a designated folder which will be in the server's current directory and the client will ask what IP and password to connect to and if the password is correct is allows the client to access the files/folders in that folder in C.D. of the server and the client can download any file within the folder by clicking a button, yet don't even know where to start.

Now my question: Can Person A read the entry "test1" while Person B is updating/deleting the entry at the exact same time? What happens in the worst case? An old match/empty match or can it cause any kind of exception/error(e.g. "TableLocked-Exception")?
writing user info such as user, computer name, date, and time to an acces database using a button click event. Then use a query to check if the user has accepted the aggreement. If the user has accepted the aggreement then call a vb.exe that display the aggrement. I have a login script that runs the vb.exe and uses a button click that records the user info to a csv file, but if the user has already agreed to the policies I do not want it run again.

I have the SQL Servers authentication se to Windows Authentication and SQL Authentication. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005.
I have been trying to solve this for 2 days now, every text book I own and google have been well and truely exhausted and I am still no closer to solving my problems.I have a login facility reading in user info from a main user file. This takes all info into a temp array and then splits usernames into a username file, passwords into a password file and a current score in a score file.
I have the login working fine and everything else in my program works as intended but touching up cosmetic aspects I want to add a Message box after login to say hello and display current score. This works great for the first name in the user file i.e - after login User1 welcome to the game. Your current score is 45 As intended. But the problem arises with any other users, my message comes out as
User2 welcome to the game. Your current score is 55 I do not understand where the random new lines are coming from. I have tried assigning the message as a variable and removing new line using

View 9 RepliesI am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth. My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. It also seems strange to me that once the days appointments have been retrieved from the database that "in theory" a client could go the whole day without having to query the database again to pick up changes - kind of scary. Some information on the data:We would probably be looking at around 100 appointments per day We capture patient name, date of birth, date and time of appointment and appointment status. What is the standard approach / best practice for this kind of scenario?
Im gonna develop an application s/w using VB.Net & Oralce for a small company with 4 employees and a MD.
Each has their own PC connected through a Hub.The task of MD is to check in the employees daily work progress & to calculate their incentives in daily basics...
And each emp should be able to check their daily incentives from their PC using the passwords provided by the s/w Now my doubt is. how should I show the daily incentives updates to all emps PC from MD pc?(i.e) if i install the s/w in all PCs, will they'll get the updates automatically? DOES VB.NET can be used here or should we use ASP.NET?
I want to use my SQL Server DB over a network. I have setup server client applications. The thing is for my current DB, I need to give it to server administrator who attaches the DB to SQLExpress instance and only then my network computers can access that.My question is, is there any way that my vb.net application could attach this DB through code at runtime, and DB gets all rights that are necessary to access it over the network?
I can attach DB using Create procedure but for this I need to know the sa password. Is there any way that I could achieve the same goal without sa passord and sa intervention? My only purpose is to enable my DB to be accessible over the network with all read /Write rights.
I have a nearly finished program. I have been able to install and run on my development PC, but I can't install it on another PC on same network.
Where to ask for help on this one please. Some very basic help is needed I think.
Using Visual Studio 2008, Vis Basic
if there was a way that I could get all the IP's on the network and put them into a listbox?
