View 2 RepliesI have an asp.net web app that uses forms-based authentication, a SqlMembershipProvider (using an encrypted password format), and a SqlRoleProvider. I need to know if it's possible to administer the users (create new users, assign them to roles, etc.) from a windows application - the powers that be don't want any administrative functionality in the web app itself. Here is the membership provider definition from web.config:
<membership defaultProvider="MyProvider">
<providers>
<add name="MyProvider"

I'm developing a program which would be the only program user will use. What i mean by this is once the windows is up, my program will run and blocks users from accessing any other program installed or comes with Windows such as internet explorer, email client, games, etc.. unless user puts password for getting out of my program.
BTW, the OS will be Windows XP.What i want to accomplish by having this is like below:
1. No one would be able to use internet (= no virus)
2. No one would be able to change system time (= no record corruption)
3. No one would be able to install any program (= less system maintenance)
My program is Kind of interactive Kiosk program only certain user can access windows and other programs. Also when it comes to system maintenance, I will remotely access the computer using pcAnywhere or teamviewer like remote access tool.So after exiting the program, i should be able to use entire system w/o any restriction.
I just started playing around with vb.net and wanted to know how to put all the windows users in a listbox.

The first action (index) should be available to everyone, this is no problem. The second and the third actions should only be available to users in a specific DOMAIN. However the tag only gives me 2 options: Roles or Users. I tried using Users and setting it to 'DOMAIN*' and 'DOMAIN?' but that doesn't work.
we are testing our visual basic application so it can be run under Windows Server 2008 R2.
We are experiencing problems caused by UAC when writing logfiles and configurationfiles.
Normally the admin configures the application so that it can be run by normal users without having to make
the whole configuration again. We do the config by writing some data into files that would have been placed
into the folder of the program. Now with UAC those files are placed in the users folder and therefor config files
are not unique anymore, also the logfiles.
I've been digging into this now for some time but have not found out, on how these configurations and logs
should be done right in Windows 2008 so that its for EVERY user, without turning UAC off.
I am writing an application that searches for a particular file in the C:Documents and Settingsuser accountsApplication Data folder. Now i am trying to make this application generic. I can make this application search in a particular users application data folder. But what i am tryin to do is take the user name from a certain file or place where windows xp stores it. Then make it search for that user. Is there a particular way to do it.

View 10 RepliesMy company uses ActiveDirectory, and naturally the IT department wants to maintain control over it and not give control to other users. I'm developing an ASP.NET app (for internal use only) using an SQL Server 2008 database. My question is, how can I BEST use the .NET namespaces and SQL Server to manage access to the app within the organization at the application (or possibly DB) level? I would like the user to be authorized based on their network username as provided by ActiveDirectory. On a side note, I would also like to access their AD contact information.
From my understanding I can use the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider class or Domain Services in the System.DirectoryServices namespace. There's also LDAP which apparently is another possibility. I'm having a hard time making sense of it all, and much less which is the best option and how to implement it. Can anyone provide me with some direction and possibly some simple sample code?
Is it possible to Allow users to increase the font size in a windows applications?
View 1 RepliesDo users of windows applications have to have the database application installed if your program uses databases to store information? For example, when making VB2008 programs, if I use the visual studio express database (.sdf), or maybe a MSAccess database, to store information within my visual basic program...when I deploy the application to the users, can they run the program okay even if they don't have MSAccess installed on their computer? Also, do I need to have MSAccess installed in order to write programs that use MSAccess databases?
View 1 RepliesI am wondering if it is possible to read in the encrypted value of a Windows users password so I can preload a textbox with the value? I have a checkbox on my .NET form -> Use Workstation Logon. When the user checks this box, the username and password fields are populated respectively.

I need to populated a ComboBox and a CheckedListBox with a list of the Windows Accounts on the host computer. I also need to the user to be able to apply settings to the users individually. Thirdly, I need to find a way to add a startup registry key in the CURRENT_USER for a different user than the "Current User" (For example: User1 is an Administrator. User2 is a Limited Account [can't modify registry]. User1 needs to add Registry key to User2's "CURRENT_USER". This is a parental control application so the Admin accounts need to be able to access the registry from all users without affecting all users at once. I do not have any code to paste because I still have not the foggiest idea of where to start. I think it probably has something to do with an array (I have no experience with arrays whatsoever) but I am stumped from there. I'm a new, self-taught programmer so I speak idiot at times,
Summary of Questions
1) How do I retrieve a list of Windows Users?
2) How do I populate the objects above with such a list?
3) How do I interact with the items on that list (specific user accounts)?
4) How do I modify another user's CURRENT_USER Registry key?
I've got a code using SQLClient that loops though all users in a Users table inside each loop i want to preform another search in the UserOrders table, thus doing a count of all orders.

1.Id like to publish a free vb.net desktop application for the users to download and use meanwhile Id like to collect usage information ex: user ip address, users registration information, used features, time spent if the user allows the report to be sent back.
2.Also , in order for the user to be able to use the application, hell have to register it then, everytime, before the application loads, it gets verified online that it was registered, maybe validate the registration information or a valid user name and password, no critical personal information. The target of this step is for the application to be used exclusively by the registered user and maybe on his computer only.

View 5 RepliesI created an application that when a user logs onto their Windows account, a Form is displayed outlining the current Computer Usage policy set by the insitution and gives the user two options either Agree or Dis-Agree. The two options are in the form of buttons, with events that depending on what the user clicked, will create a log text file at a specified location, with enteries of Date,Time,CurrentUser, and if they agreed or disagreed. If they agreed the application after creating/amending the file will then terminate, otherwise it will update the file and then force Windows to logoff the current user.
Now I made a shortcut of the .exe of the application and placed it in the startup for all users, and yes the application loads at startup for all the users following the procedures mentioned above. The problem I am facing is, that if the current user logs off, or is forced to log off, and another user logs onto Windows, goes through the whole ordeal mentioned above, the application is denied access to the logfile that was created under the previous user, and thus crashes.
So my question is, how can I created a text file using vb 2008 application, that is accessible by multiple Windows users. I have even tried changing the location of the created file to the shared folder, but the end result is the same.
i am wondering if there are any case studies / white papers available comparing web applications to remote desktop applications on running on comparable hardware? What I am trying to get at is if a web application can support more users, as far as hardware resources go, than the same windows based application running on terminal services?
View 3 RepliesI want to log the ip's of the users that use my vb.net program.
First of all, is this legal?
If it is, how can i log the ip's in a textfile on a webserver?
Im thinking about a small non-visible webbrowser that sends the ip to a .txt file.
I am wanting to get the users IP address (the logged in user will be running the application under there user context on there local PC), but many PC's in our environment have multiple NIC's that have been added by VMWare Workstation, I would like to exclude these type of bridged connections and only show the "primary" NIC on the PC.The following function will get the IPv4 address, however on my test PC it is returning the bridged connection and not the IP Address of the network facing NIC.
Shared Function GetIP(ByVal computerName As String) As String
'Dim ipEntry As IPHostEntry = Dns.GetHostEntry(computerName)
'Dim tmpAddr As IPAddress() = ipEntry.AddressList
[code]....
My users have a mixture of DHCP and static addresses so cannot limit the NIC to either of these connection types. We tend to have a 172.16.x.x IP range, so is there a way to modify the above function so that it will only return a 172.16.x.x address?
My form's KeyPreview is set to True. I want to allow my users to use the Enter Key instead of just the Tab key. I have the following code in my form's KeyPress event:
Private Sub frmDesigner_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles Me.KeyPress
If e.KeyChar = vbkeyreturn Then
[Code]....
It doesn't like vbkeyreturn, which I used in Visual Basic 6.0. I think I must be close to having it right.
I'm attempting to make a system that stores employees details...name address etc. I would like the users to be able to log on, see and change their own details only. Is this possible is asp.net and if so how? I'm really new at this so if you could keep answers as simple as possible.

i am trying to get a list of domains' and users' name on a computer so that users can select to run a program in other identity, but I can only find the current user and I can't find any post about getting these.
