IDE :: Do Users Of Windows Applications Have To Have Database Application Installed

Jan 26, 2009

Do users of windows applications have to have the database application installed if your program uses databases to store information? For example, when making VB2008 programs, if I use the visual studio express database (.sdf), or maybe a MSAccess database, to store information within my visual basic program...when I deploy the application to the users, can they run the program okay even if they don't have MSAccess installed on their computer? Also, do I need to have MSAccess installed in order to write programs that use MSAccess databases?

How An Application Like GameSpy Or GameRanger Launches Applications And Is Able To Sync With Other Users(all Joining Together)

Feb 14, 2010

I have been trying to figure out how an application like GameSpy or GameRanger launches applications and is able to sync with other users(all joining together). I have been under the assumption that it was just simple command line switches being used. The more I look into it the more I don't think that is the case. I believe they are hooking into a game's API to do so. My question would be, using OllyDbg I was able to get the memory address of a Text display in the game(The game you are about to create's name). The default is "TEST SESH", and if you highlight the field and hit enter you can edit it. I was wondering if anyone could give me incite on how I could set this text through a DLL injection?

Deploying Windows Applications With A Database

Feb 6, 2010

I'm a first time visitor and poster, but I'm definitly going to stick around. I'm running an old version of Visual Studio .Net Academic 2002 and the .Net framework 2.0. I'm stuck on an issue regarding the deployment of a few programs I've thrown together. They all work fine on my development machine, but the problem they all use SQL Server databases, and I can't find any specific help on deploying a windows application with a database on a machine that isn't set up basically just like my development machine.

I know that I need the .net runtime bootstrapper on the target machine, so I can run basic programs that dont use SQL databases. That's no problem. But what about programs that make heavy use of databases? How does one go about deploying it on target machines? Is there a SQL server bootstrapper?

Apr 3, 2012

1.Id like to publish a free vb.net desktop application for the users to download and use meanwhile Id like to collect usage information ex: user ip address, users registration information, used features, time spent if the user allows the report to be sent back.

2.Also , in order for the user to be able to use the application, hell have to register it then, everytime, before the application loads, it gets verified online that it was registered, maybe validate the registration information or a valid user name and password, no critical personal information. The target of this step is for the application to be used exclusively by the registered user and maybe on his computer only.

Project Using VB And A Database In Access - Check If My Application Requires Access To Be Installed Or Not?

Feb 16, 2012

I'm using VS 2010, and I did a project using VB and a database in Access. The problem is that when I try to put that "application" on other computers, sometimes, is not working. I thought it can be because on these computers they don't have access, but on one computer, is running another app which is using Access and there is no Access installed. How can I check if my application requires Access to be installed or not?

Here is a example of how I did the connection:

Public AccessOLEDBConnString= "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & myfullpath & ";Jet OLEDB:Database Password=password"

Function getConnection() As OleDb.OleDbConnection

[CODE]...

And when I want to have access at the data I'm doing like this:

dim conn as Oledb.OledbConnection

dim sql as string

dim ds as Dataset

[CODE]...

Shareware .net Application Packed Using Innosetup, Installed In Different Directories Creates 2 Different Set Of Application

Jul 16, 2010

I have created an shareware application using vb.net visual studio 2008 for windows desktop, and packaged it using innosetup 5.3.8. The problem is when i have installed the application in C:Program FilesApplication and it runs successfully(use trial period of the application), Im also able to install the application once again freshly with the same setup by installing in different directory.eg C:Program FilesApplication new . The application in C:Program FilesApplication new does not have any settings of the already installed one.

Where do i went wrong . Do i need to take care of this in my application(vb.net) or innosetup. How to take care of the already installed path in innosetup or carry the settings of already installed application to newly installed path by upgrading the older one.

I dont want to write any thing in registry because the application does not want any administrative permission requirements. If i install the application in same path it gets updated with the older settings being taken over to this new one and it works fine.

Blocking Windows Users From Using Windows But My Program?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm developing a program which would be the only program user will use. What i mean by this is once the windows is up, my program will run and blocks users from accessing any other program installed or comes with Windows such as internet explorer, email client, games, etc.. unless user puts password for getting out of my program.

BTW, the OS will be Windows XP.What i want to accomplish by having this is like below:

1. No one would be able to use internet (= no virus)

2. No one would be able to change system time (= no record corruption)

3. No one would be able to install any program (= less system maintenance)

My program is Kind of interactive Kiosk program only certain user can access windows and other programs. Also when it comes to system maintenance, I will remotely access the computer using pcAnywhere or teamviewer like remote access tool.So after exiting the program, i should be able to use entire system w/o any restriction.
