I am tightening up my coding with the Option Strict set to ON. It has now produced alot of errors. An example of this is:

I need to write an interface to get data to/from our data files.
We have a low level class that holds field values for each record read from the files.
This just holds two values, the value read from the file (DBValue) and the updated value that may need to be written back to the file (CurrentValue).
These values may be any of the standard value types (integer, date etc) or a string.
Either value (DBValue or CurrentValue) may be null if not defined.
I have written the class to manage this data which works fine while option strict is NOT on.
But we have an office policy of having option strict on all the time.
When I put option strict on, my object value comparisons fail with the error: "Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity."
Question, how should I change the following code to handle option strict on ...

I am trying to display the register contents in a textbox in hexadecimal. I would like to always display 4 characters. The register is 16 bits wide. I have 4 byte parameter variables (param_a_1 through param_a_4) for containing the incoming register value. Because of the way the packet is communicated into the VB app, I pick out the bytes I want displayed and convert them to a string for displaying. View 13 RepliesWhat's the trailing ampersand on VB hexadecimal numbers for? I've read it forces conversion to an Int32 on the chance VB wants to try and store as an Int16. That makes sense to me. But the part I didn't get from the blurb was to always use the trailing ampersand for bitmasks, flags, enums, etc. Apparantly, it has something to do with overriding VB's fetish for using signed numbers for things internally, which can lead to weird results in comparisons.
So to get easy points, what are the rules for VB.Net hexadecimal numbers, with and without the trailing ampersand? Please include the specific usage in the case of bitmasks/flags and such, and how one would also use it to force signed vs. unsigned.

I am creating a program that will allow me to type any Hexadecmial character into a textbox and it will convert it into an integer.
I can convert from integer to hexadecimal just not the other way around
This program, it reads in a file, and displays it in hexadecimal, like using a hex editor. It then goes to compare the strings and whatnot, and display certain values. During the program, there is a time where I need to display a set of offsets as decimal because that is the way that it is shown regularly.
Taking the two specific offsets and displaying them in hex ends up giving me something like "3039" or "000A", which should respectively convert to 12345 or 00010. This "ID" that I am converting, can be 00000 to 65535, which in hex is 0000 to FFFF. The current method I was given only works if the value is less than 512 or something like that.

So the server I am running has a database of players equipment, I am trying to write a program to see if they are hacking by comparing the item requirement with the stats the player has, to do this I need to convert the varbinary(512) column from the SQL Database too a Hexadecimal string, then from that string remove certain parts of it.

i need to compare the equipmentDB, then return the CharacterID from the equipmentID, compare that ID with the CharacterID in CharacterDB, then extract the accountID then return the account name from the accountDB I don't know how the binary is split up from item too item, although I would imagine, it isn't, i would have thought it just goes onto the next item when the item ends.Although, all the items start with hex string "0x" so this may be the separator!

I have come across some Base64 conversion functions in .net(FromBase64.string etc). What i want is, for a sample, i have a base 64 encoded string as
