Hiding / Unloading Form When Next One Loaded

Jun 8, 2011

I am learning VB.NET and as a first task I am creating a login form. I've been trying to link it to another form once a correct username and password are entered. However, despite that I still cant be able to hide it or unload it once the next form is loaded.

Here is the Code
Private Sub OK_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OK.Click
If UsernameTextBox.Text = "chris" And PasswordTextBox.Text = "chrispass" Then
Me.Hide()
Form2.Show()
End If
Me.Close()
End Sub

The Form2 appears as coded above but the 'Me.Hide()' manages to hide the login form but then it appears again.

Loading A New Form And Unloading The Current One?

Jun 2, 2010

I feel like a complete noob for asking this because I know how to do this in VB6... But in VB.NET 2008, how would you load a new form and unload the current one? I know that in VB6 the code would be:

The problem with that code is that it just ends my program completely without showing frmMain.

Loading And Unloading Controls On A Form?

I'm rewriting a vb6 program in vb.net, and I was wondering what the best alternative is to vb6's "load"/"unload" commands for loading and unloading controls on a form.

e.g. (VB6)

Unload frmContainer.DetailGrid1
Load frmContainer.DetailGrid1
Currently I am adding/removing controls using

Hiding The Child Form Also Hide The Parent Form?

Aug 16, 2010

I have three forms: A, B and C. Upon a button being clicked, A displays B. Similarly, B displays C. Both using the ShowDialog() method.

However when I use the Hide() method (inside a Button Click event) on form C to close it, form B also closes. Why would this be? As far as I can see, it shouldn't be doing this. I certainly didn't write any code to tell it to do that.

[Code]...

UPDATE: I am an idiot. DialogResult was set to Cancel on the button as I'd copy+pasted it from the existing Close button and not realised that property was set

Error When Hiding And Close A Form

May 1, 2012

I have a log in form, and once you log in, it's supposed to show a new form.

The problem here is...if I use Me.Close(), then both of the forms close, and the application terminates.

If I use Me.Hide(), than the first form doesn't actually stop running in the memory, and proceeds to run in the background even after you're done with the program.

Hiding Form - Hotkeys Only Recognized Once

Dec 19, 2010

I have a small app with one form (form1) which is supposed to be hidden until a hot key combo is pressed. I have read and taken sample code from: [URL]. I do have a keyboard class that hooks keyboard input, (I have my reasons) but it's odd that it will recognise the first hotkey and fire the event, but none after that? The problem is, I can make the form show, but not hide again. It will only recognise one shortcut, one time. How do I make it respond to another hotkey combo? Is the handle changing? Even with focus, the enabled form is not hiding again.

Accessing Datasets Loaded In Main Form From A Child Form?

Aug 11, 2009

I have a program I've been working on for some time now and I'd like to try to streamline it somewhat. I have a main menu form that has a split panel, in the left panel is a treeview that displays forms you can open and when one is selected, it opens in a child window in the right panel. Each time I open form I called DWNForm, it does a series of dataset loads which are the populating items for a series of listviews.

What I would like to do is have these datasets load once during the mainMenu load and then have the DWNForm be able to access the datasets once it is called from the treeview selection.

VS 2010 Expanding/ Hiding Controls On Form

Jan 19, 2012

I'd like to design a Winform with expanding controls if that 's overly complicated. The idea is that I would have rows of information, each with an "Expand" button. On pressing the button, the rows underneath the selected row would move down and the controls that are associated with the selected row (some textboxes/ dropdowns etc) would appear. Vice versa when you click the "Hide" button.

My RegUnloadKey Not Unloading

Feb 1, 2010

I am currently writing a program that is saving user setting for the program into the registry. The problem is with the 'Administrator Control Panel' that I am writing for that program. To load/edit those settings for users that are not logged in their NTUser.dat must be loaded into the registry. I have based that part off of [url]... using the API functions RegLoadKey and RegUnloadKey. When all that is done is loading and unloading the key it works fine. However, any time that I read from the loaded registry user hive it will not unload that users registry hive. I have tryed using the RegistryKey class[url]...

My assumption is that the RegistryKey is not being closed or released properly, or completely enough for the user hive to unload. I have tried the .Close member in the RegistryKey class as well as tried 'CType(regKey, IDisposable).Dispose()' (regKey is defind as registrykey) to close the registykey. After I close the program (running from Visual Studio) I can manually unload the hive via regedit.

Is there another/better/more complete way to close the registrykey to allow for the RegUnloadKey function to work?

VS 2008 Hiding The Current Form And Showing Another Which To Be On The Same Level?

Sep 13, 2010

It is times like these that I miss the old VB6 language I wish I could hide the current forn and show another form which - this is the important thing - to be on the same level that the previous form was . You see , I used to use this code :

Me.Hide Form2.Show However , sometimes in VB .NET this does not work the way I want it to . You see , the current form does get hidden and Form2 is shown indeed ; however , Form2 is shown somewhere in the background . If there are other programs opened at that time , then Form2 is shown behind all those programs , that's what I mean by saying I want it to be shown in the same level as the previous form was the only way out , I found , was to reverse the code :

Form2.Show Me.Hide In this way Form2 is successfully shown right where the previous form was shown (above the other programs) but in some cases this also is not pleasant because it might take some time for Form2 to load while at the same time the previous form is still visible on the screen and therefore for a slight time both forms are shown one over the other , which is surely not nice . That's why I still want to first hide the first form and later show Form2 .

VS 2010 GarbageCollector & Unloading Procedures

Feb 9, 2012

So if anyone has fallowed any of my post, then you will know I'm still in the process of transferring to pure vb.Net, while simultaneously trying to rid any bad habits that stemmed from the good 'ol vb6 days.So having said I have a few question that are in regards to the GarbageCollector. Now I'm not looking to modify or mess with it at all, but rather it's exact functionality and where I should be disposing of and handling my own unloading.For the sake of my coding style I like to run my application differently than most(unless this is the way it should be done) but this only applies to my more large project.[code]

So as you can already guess my startup object is the AppMain sub, and I have the application framework disabled.I'm not sure how the Garbage Collecter functions, so truly I'm not sure if my code there is necessary or unnecessary. What it does is unloads all open forms that may have been left behind, plus it closes the database connection if one is open. Also I'm wondering if its a good idea to clear all my collection as well. My concern with the collections is just I have sooo much information being stored(it's a business management system that handles transactions, appointments, inventory clients employees etc etc) and this keeps growing. So I'm not really sure if all this gets handled automatically by the GarbageCollector or if it's good practice to begin clearing out this data and disposing it before hand.
