View 4 RepliesI want to create ODBC DSN for a database (which will be included in my application folder whenever a user setups the application). I want to know how to create ODBC with all the required parameters so that the first thing that is done when the setup is being run is connecting the database to the application. I have tried using default VB.NET setup wizard and Installshield.

I have a small vb.net application that fires a crystal report through crystal viewer.
The report uses an ODBC connection provided by 32-bit software accounts package, which is installed in the ODBC 32-bit This all works fine on 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win7 with no problems, When run on a win7 64-bit machine the application launches ok, but when it comes to running the report, it prompts for a database logon box for the odbc connection.
When the report is run seperate on its own, on the exact same pc through crystal reports desginer it runs fine, Its almost like the application is not picking the 32-bit ODBC set up is it the case that the connection needs to be coded rather than using the report connection,
I have used VB (versions 2 - 6) through many years; however, I am crash-course training myself into the VB2008 / VB2010 world kicking a screaming. I would like suggestions as to what SQL database access method should I focus more on in my learning process without making me feel that I'm a million years behind. I know I have WinForms where I can create a datasourse and drag / drop fields or tables on a form to create a grid (not really what I'm looking for).
My trouble isn't so much designing the form but in how I access the database. Theres XML, LINQ to SQL, ADO.NET, and many other methods. Not only do I need to grasp these methods quickly but I also need to know what type of projects I should create. What I mean is...I was thinking that I would design a WinForm app; however, I see that there are WPF apps and others to chose from. This is getting deep. I know it depends on the project that I'm working on. My plans are to write an app based off of either an SQL Express 2008 or SQL Server 2008 database. This first app will be standalone for now but may later become multi-user. I know I'm far behind on my learning curve coming from VB6. I have read a bit on VB2005 / 2008 / 2010. I own
both VB2008 and VB2010. I use VB2008 at work. I know ADO.NET is still alive but by what I read online, it's a dying method and is only kept for backward compatibility. XML and LINQ to SQL and other methods are all pretty new to me.
I have developed a small ms-access based software with vb.net.
I've added auto-update capabilities to the software (mostly by using clickonce) to simplify the release of new features.
Every version of the software executes the update routine which may update also the existing database.Lately i've made few changes on the database structure adding few stored queries, so i want the autoupdate code to programmatically add these new queries to the existing database and make it perfectly up to date.
I haven't already found a solution to add stored queries to an ms-access database using odbc...I also tried to use the "CREATE PROC" sql statement but it does not seem to work with access databases, even if i create the query form the Microsoft Office Access front-end.I've found some examples that uses ADODB, but i'm using odbc to remain both x86 and x64 compliant.

Here is the spec:
The client is prompted for their name and a personal reference number. If the application is successful then this number becomes the loan agreement reference number. If the applicant has a credit rating of 14 or more points the application is rejected. If the credit rating is less than 14 points then the client is prompted for the loan period (must be equal to 12, 24 or 36 months) and the amount required.
The cost of the loan is 6% if required over 12 months and 8% if over 24 months and 12% over 36 months. This is added to the loan. The applicant's net monthly income and total monthly outgoings are taken into account. If the monthly repayment is more than 25% of disposable income (net income outgoings), then the application is rejected. If the repayment is less than or equal to 25% then the loan is granted and a form is produced and printed with the relevant information, including the loan and repayment amounts.

The process of the system is that when the clients starts, the desktop is locked and ofcourse the user can't access the desktop unless he/she logged-in. And when the scheduled time (e.g 1 hour) is done, the client computers where automatically shutdown like the Time Logger Softwares

I am getting the following ODBC exception when I moved my development platform from Windows XP X86 to Windows 7 X64: ERROR [IM014] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application What I'm sure it means is that the server it is connecting to is 32 bit, and the computer I'm running on is 64 bit and the ODBC driver in use is 64 bit.
The application I am writing is set to run in 32 bit mode because some of the third-party software that we employ is not 64 bit compatible. I tried downloading a 32 bit driver and changing the DSN but it did not fix my issue. I still get the exception. If anyone has any links for 32 bit SQL drivers, or how I could fix this by changing the project around, I'm all ears.

View 1 RepliesI just want to know how to create a prepared statement in VB. I know in java one would use ? and these would get replaced. I am aware that in VB you use @ParameterName. Basically my code gets down to where i use the prepare method and the error i get is that my syntax for my insert is incorrect. To me it seems that the parameter is not getting substituted in the insert statement
Eg.
Dim cmd As String = "insert into sites(id) values(@id)"
Dim odcmd As New OdbcCommand
odcmd.CommandText = cmd[code].......
