i am a visual foxpro programmer, and in that language we can make not only user controls like textbox, combobox, grid,etc.But form classes in visual way, doing drag and drop a form class. How can i make the same thing in vb.net?
View 4 RepliesI am very new to this whole programming thing and I have read several books and many websites but I can't get a good start on creating a video poker game. I understand that I need to create classes, but have no idea how to start. Most of the things I have been reading have been for Visual Basic 6.0 and it appears hard to understand. I am looking for some type of tutorial of how to create the classes I need and how to get the actual information from the classes into my form. Can anyone out there provide me with a good starting point? Is there any good (and easy) code out there to get me started. I feel that if I can get a good starting base, I can learn from there.
View 3 RepliesAlright, I've been taking this class in school for Software development, and right now I am working on a assignment my professor is having us do, and honestly, I am kind of stumped here. Basically he wants us to create a form in Visual Studio 2005. It has a group box with two Radio buttons, (One for boys, One for Girls) and a List box that lists the corresponding names of the Gender you selected with a radio button.Alternatively, you can click the Report button and get the list that way.
Heres a screenshot of how he wants it: He wants us to use parallel arrays to make the list, each name has a corresponding M or F. So far I have the objects all set up, and the I have declared the parallel array like this in the Declaration of the form:

how to make a layered form (im a begginer!). I've found something about calling API, but that sounded like old; cant I do this with .Net? If api is necessary, with that hwnd thing, how do I call it? And if you are so kind, is there a way to search for thing only for visual basic .net 2010? If I look at some classes in the framework, using reflector, I can see that forms and user controls are made private and nested into a parent class.For instance, I have a control which makes use of pop-up form that is specific to that control.At the moment, I make the pop-up form friend accessible.If I wanted to do it the framework way, I'd make it private and nest it into the control class.If I do this, however, I can no longer use the ide to design the form and I get errors when I try to compile.

View 3 RepliesMy VB project is large enough that it requires several files. It was originally developed as a Console App and I created each file as a MODULE. All modules could use subroutines, data structures and constants from other MODULES and everything worked fine. I needed to add basic windowing to the app and this required that the app be converted from a Console App to a Windows Forms App. The main window is Form1 which is not a MODULE but a CLASS. The problem is that some MODULE based functions cannot access subroutines, data and constants that are defined within the CLASS Form1 unless they are incorporated into the CLASS file and this makes the CLASS file very large. If I add a new Class file to the project, it also cannot interoperate with Class Form1 in the same way that multi-MODULE code interoperates.
How does one spread CLASS code across several files and still allow it to interoperate as if it were in a single file? Alternatively, how does one create several CLASS files that operate the way multiple MODULE files operate.I am sure that there are all kinds of best practices that I am violating but the goal to to get some prototype software working and interfaced to some lab equipment.
I want to download xsd specifications from a web service and automatic converting (serialize) these schemas to classes (visual studio - vb.net). If the organization that is responsible for the xsd schemas alter them in a way that only my class corresponding to the xsd have to be altered (not the rest of my code) I would like to automatic update my xsd corresponding class.
I use vs2010. What I want to do is: call a web service where I can send in an input parameter to the service which specifies the xsd I want to retrieve (the service is GetShemaDefenition and returns an object with the schema specification in a string property of the object). I den have to read the xsd string from the string property and convert this to a class representation of this xsd specification. Is it possible to do this automatically? I have done this manually by using xsd.exe. If the owner organization of the xsd has altered the xsd specification, I have to test if there is a new specification, and if there is I have to build a new class representation of this xsd? Is it possible to do what I want? And how would I know if it has been a big change in the xsd which also affect other parts of my code, not just the class representation of the xsd?
Update:I use one web service where one of the properties is a string. The string is an XML inside a CDATA block. The organization which provides the web service will not pares the xml inside the CDATA block but instead forward this to another organization that will use the xml data. The organization which uses the xml data specifies the xsd schem that I have to follow to generate my xml correct. This is the xsd schema I can get from another web service. I don't really understand what I can do with this xsd file from the web service. What can I do with it and why do I want to download it from the web service, when I can't use it automatically? Because I have to manually do the changes when the xsd changes I can easily download the xsd schema from the organization's home page and make the new class with xsd.exe.

Sometime ago I used to create all my class structures in vision before I wrote them. That however didn't last. I found it easier to just make little drawings with pencil and piece of paper. And I still do to this day. In code usually those drawings manifest themselves as interfaces which then are implemented by different classes. I do all this in code. And I was just wondering if there is any tools available in Visual Studio for VB.NET that would allow to create interfaces and implement them in classes (which a lot of times means just adding variables to class that will hold data passed with interface attributes) from design mode(kinda like using Visio only after you finish you don't have to write out code).

The name of the class should be Ualb_Class (note we cannot use Class, as it is a reserved word in VBA). All of the fields should have corresponding properties. There are few considerations:

The property for Meeting Day only accepts one of the values defined in the table. You can decide whether to accept an integer value or a string value of the days represented.
You are also to code the Initialize method, much like we coded the Initialize method for the Student class in Lecture #17. In the Initialize method, you will use the InputBox function to obtain the department code and course number. use a different InputBox for each value, so you don't have to mess with separating the single text value returned from that function. I am creating an Add-In that I want to create classes and forms based on a database structure. I can't find any information anywhere on how to programatically add code to classes. I know I can write out the files and add them to a project, but that would limit what I can do in the future. I would like the possibility to update a function in the future which would be impossible writing out a file and loading the whole thing back in. It would destroy any modifications made to the class, and since this Add-In will only be creating a framework, there will usually be modifications.
I got this line from the macro recorder:DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.text = strDACode
But I like to keep Option Strict on, and this is late bound according to the IDE. There seems to be very little help on the IDE and how to use it creating Add-Ins. If I overlooked something please point me there, but I can find nothing. I don't know if it can be done, but I was able to do it in an Add-In for VB6.I would also like to add controls to a form, so if anyone can point me somewhere where it explains
I have an interface that i have declared some of the basic internal functions, subs, properties, etc. This interface is then implemented into 3 pre-defined classes. These classes are end-use classes so they dont get derived or inherited elsewhere. I am trying to create a generic shared class that can operate on each of these 3 predefined classes and potentially more as long as they implement the interface.

I am cleaning up some code and I have multiple classes that are 99% exactly the same. So my understanding is that my options are...
1. Create a class and all other classes inherit from it and modify it a bit
2. Create an abstract class and all classes inherit from it and modify a bit ** I took this route
3. Create an interface and all classes Implement that interface.

The issue with this approach is when double click on this item in VS2008 IDE it shows new empty form, not MainForm UI. It looks like VS2008 does not support multiple partial classes for a Forms.

How can I structure my classes so that the user interfaces though a single class while the supporting classes are hidden from their view? I think its best understood in an example:
Public Class MyInterface
Public Economic as EconomicClass
Public Sub New()
MyBase.New()

So you might ask why am I even separating them? It's strictly for others who will be working with this interface. I need to funnel them though a logical structure:
interface.Economic.MyMethod
interface.Currency.MyMethod
etc
This way everything is already handled for them in the background and they only need to run the method they need. I don't know if I can have it both ways in VB.NET.
