How To Debug Exception On Other Thread

Jan 6, 2011

I have a lot of shortlived threads that updates my program, by events fired from a socket connection. My problem is I don't know how to debug this, like how to get the proper information on where in the code the exceptions occur. Because I get for example an exception like below, and this will just be the print in the Immidiate Window. There is no pop-up window, and it does not highlight any line in the code or show even what method it was in.

A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Core.dll
A first chance exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in mscorlib.dll
A first chance exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadAbortException' occurred in Krs.Ats.IBNet.dll

Cross-thread Operation Not Valid Exception In Single Thread Application?

Nov 14, 2009

I am getting this exception: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'TextBoxOutput' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. in a VB 2008 Windows Forms application that I havent specifically made multi-threaded. I have create a sub called Out() like this:

Private Sub Out(ByVal inString As String)
Me.TextBoxOutput.Text += (Me.TextBoxOutput.Text & inString & vbNewLine)
Me.TextBoxOutput.SelectionStart = Me.TextBoxOutput.Text.Length
Me.TextBoxOutput.ScrollToCaret()
End Sub

and I call it from various events to log messages I am getting from my pbx, which I use a third party open source dll to access. The interesting thing to me is that if I run the deployed application (ie, not in the VS IDE) I do not get any exceptions, it's only from within the IDE.if I add the line: Control.CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = False to the form's constructor, the exceptions stop, but a) this seems like a hacky way to get around the issue and b) the application seems to hang sometimes when I have it set this way.

Multi-thread Accessing The UI Thread Control, No Exception Thow?

Oct 11, 2011

As we know, one STA UI thread creats the controls only canbe accessed in the UI thread in Winform application. And we need to call control.invoke or begininvoke to run the code in the background thread.

Yes, below code in VB.Net , VS 2010 Winform project can throw the exception "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Form1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on."

VS 2008 Can't Debug Code Within A Thread

Sep 1, 2009

I am going nuts here. First time trying to debug an app that uses threads. I have a console application with a thread that calls Sub (Sub A) from a thread. I have been able to get the debugger to stop on breakpoints in Sub A by setting the condition to "Test" = Thread.CurrentThread.Name (and naming the thread "Test") Using a normal breakpoint does nothing.

However, in Sub A after it hits the breakpoint, any stepping (F10, F11) causes the Sub and app to exit instead of going to the next line of code.There is an IF / ELSE statement in Sub A. I have put a System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine statement in both the IF / ELSE blocks, yet none of this code executes. Sub A calls a webservice, so I initially thought something might have been crashing in that, so I tried running Sub A without using a separate thread and everything works as expected. Do I need to change some setting in VS2008's debugger?

Null Reference Exception On Debug?

Sep 13, 2010

Now, when I try to debug my program, it immediately throws the exception below, this is before entering the program itself if I understand correctly. Any advice on how to resolve this? Between now and the last time I tried running debug, I had tried making a section of the program MDI, but gave up on that and delete that code. Also none of that part of the program is even in a position to be ran (the initial interface and onward do not execute that code)

Multithreading - .Net: Does Debug.Writeline Stop Thread Execution

Aug 19, 2009

I have a vb.net application that uses threads to asynchronously process some tasks in a "Scheduled Task" (console application).We are limiting this app to run 10 threads at once, like so:

(pseudo-code)

- create a generic list of 10 threads

- spawn off the threadproc for each one

- do a thread.join statement for each thread to wait for the longest running one to complete.

What i am finding is that if the code called by the threadproc contains any "Debug.Writeline" or "Trace.Traceinformation" statements, the thread hangs. I can see the thread in the Debug - Windows - Threads window, and switch to it, but it highlights the debug.writeline statement and never gets past it. is there something special about the Debug or Trace statements that make them non-thread-safe? Any idea why this would hang things up? If I leave the debug statement in, the thread never completes. If I take the debug statement out, the thread completes in less than 5 seconds.

Change Breakpoint - Debug A Null Reference Exception

Sep 25, 2009

I'm having some trouble with breakpoints. I'm trying to debug a null reference exception. However if I set a breakpoint right before the null exception normally occurs, the null exception stops occuring. Here is a (very) simplified code snippet to give an example of my code.

[Code]....

In my real project, the line that calls DoSomething will throw a null reference trying to access MyChild. However if I put a breakpoint at that line, MyChild exists, and the call goes through without a problem. In the past, this was usually sign of a race condition in my code. In this scenario however, there are no other threads that modify MyList or any MyParent objects. What could possibly occur when visual studio breaks into code that preserves MyChild object that does not occur when no breakpoint exist? VS 2008 Thread Abort Exception While Using Background Worker

Aug 6, 2010

I'm working on a web application that uses the web browser control to get and set info from my website. The content on the site is pulled from different pages and the data the application stores becomes really huge so i used a background worker to do the work and keep the form responsive. On each loop i call to get the webbrowser's inner html so i can sort through it and grab what i need and it works; but only the first time!? After i call it the first time and try to call it again to update the variables the function hangs and then the console shows me a Thread Abort Exception, The try statement i used to contain it doesn't fire off an exception. When i debug the program and i get to that function, it hangs and then just stops working.

The function that loops:

vb.net
Dim ids As String = GrabIDs()
Dim IDCount As Long = ids.Split(CChar(",")).Length - 1
Do Until IDCount = 0

Callback Method - Cross Thread Operation Not Valid Exception?

Jul 28, 2009

I have a windows form that gets data from a scale via the serial port. Since I need the operator to be able to cancel the process I do the get data process on a second thread. The data collection process gets multiple readings from the scale one at a time. The form has a label that needs to be updated with information specific to each reading.

I call the method to get the data from the scale with this code.
Dim ad As New readALine(AddressOf thisScale.readALine)
Dim ac As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.GetDataCallback)
Dim iar As IAsyncResult = ad.BeginInvoke("", ac, ad)

The delegate for the readALine method is defined in the UI code.
Delegate Function readALine(ByVal toSend As String) As String

The GetDataCallback method:
Private Sub GetDataCallback(ByVal ia As IAsyncResult)
.
.
.
lblInstructions.Text = _thisMeasure.dt.Rows(_currRow - 1).Item("cnt") & ":"
lblInstructions.Refresh()
.
.
.
End Sub

I get the exception on the "lblInstructions.Text =" statement. I thought the GetDataCallback method was part of the UI thread so don't understand why I'm getting the exception. I know this could probably be rewritten using a BackgroundWorker and it's appropriate events but for now would like to understand why this isn't working as expected. The application was written originally in VS2003 and just recently upgraded to VS2008.

Exception W/ Threading And Invoke In A Class - Read A Sock Without Freezing The Thread?

Mar 12, 2011

I have created a class for Socket reads so I can create sockets on command. Due to performing a socket read, the program will freeze waiting for incoming data due to being on a single thread. So I created a separate thread for the reading of the sock and attempt to invoke an event to prevent multi-threading errors.

But I am getting an error when trying to Invoke: "Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created."

How can I fix this or is there a better way to read a sock without freezing the thread?

Class for Sockets:

Option Explicit On
Option Strict On

Imports System.Text

Calling form code example:

Private WithEvents Socks As clsSock

Private Sub Sock_Connected(ByVal state As String) Handles Socks.Connected

Update The Button Text On A Form From A Backgroundworker.do_work Event, And It Failed With The Usual Cross-thread Exception Message?

I tried to update the button text on a form from a backgroundworker.do_work event, and it failed, with the usual cross-thread exception message.However, by pure chance, I also tried to update text in a system.windows.form.toolstripstatuslabel also from this backgroundworker.do_work event, and it DOES work. Question: why is this? Is it perhaps because theres some kind of implicit shared behaviour with system.windows.form.toolstripstatuslabel?

This is the error message I am getting:

"Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Panel1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." The reason I am getting this error is because I am opening up a new form and then calling these three things:

Panel1.Show()
Label1.Show()
Label2.Show()

why I get this error message because it doesn't occur normally if I open Form2 after closing Form1, it only occurs when I open Form2 after closing Form4.

Waiting For Threads - Thread.join Suspend Execution Of Code On Calling Thread Until Spawned Thread Finishes Or Is Aborted

Sep 2, 2010

My understanding is that thread.join will suspend the execution of code on the calling thread until the spawned thread finishes or is aborted...

With that in mind, I tried this:

For i = 1 to 50
threads = New Thread(AddressOf test)
threads.IsBackground = True
threads.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA)

[CODE]...

However, the rest of the code runs when the loop finishes, not waiting for all the spawned threads to finish. Since the rest of the code needs the threads to finish (otherwise the rest will error).

Cross-thread Operation Not Valid: Control 'Autocad' Accessed From A Thread Other Than The Thread It Was Created On

Jun 6, 2010

I have written an application that loads a form - frmCad as well as AutoCad. It does this via a class which detects when AutoCad quits.

Friend Class CadApp Private WithEvents AppObject As AcadApplication... Private Sub AppObject_BeginQuit(ByRef Cancel As Boolean) Handles AppObject.BeginQuit RaiseEvent Quit() End SubEnd Class

My main class loads frmCad as well as CadApp.

When I debug the program, it stops at frmCad.Dispose()The program continues to execute, but all the code after it fails to work.Looking more carefully I get an error message which contains:-Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Autocad' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
