How To Retrieve Website Information
Sep 21, 2009
I wanted to make a program where it will retrieve data from websites I use regularly and display important parts to me such as my horoscope, friends online, new emails etc. I'm just having a problem figuring out how to get visual basic to display the website information.

I am using VB2005 and trying to put an application together.What it needs to do is retrieve information from a binary file, possibly alter that information, and put it back into a new file.The file is a .wav file with data appened to the end. There is an additional section at the end of the .wav file which stores xml data.I have found that if I open this in a hex editor and make a 1:1 swap on any of the bytes that the application that the file is for can still read the XML.If I tried to add or remove characters from the XML then it would not read. I located a header byte and incremented it to resolve this.
This worked as an excellent bandage to do conversions where the data always needed to be changed to the same thing.What I have been asked to do is build logic that allows for different things to happen depending upon what data is contained within the file.The method that I am currently trying to impliment is:
Read through the file with a system.io.binaryreader
Searche for a bytestream that will signal data is coming
For example:
If System.IO.File.Exists("C: est estread.wav") Then
Dim findit() As Integer = New Integer() {&H3C, &H55, &H73, &H72, &H44, &H65, &H66, &H30, &H31, &H30}
Dim i As Integer[code].....
And then extract all the data till the end of element marker "<" It seemed like there should be a better way and I was looking for some insight. If I proceed with this method, I will have to read the file one time to gather the information and then a second time to write it all out with the header modified for length.This is my first experiene with working with binary files in this way.Also,I've been experiementing with building a string and slapping it back in at the end using the binarywriter.write(string) method.I noticed that it was putting in header characters before the string.These seem to change if I change the length of the string.At one point it was d0 07. Later it became e7 07. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this header from being inserted?
I tried a for each loop to grab all of the characters from the string, convert them to a byte array and deposit the byte array into the file, but the header remained the same. When I write the byte array generated from a system.io.binaryreader I do not get this header.

I have an asp.net webpage that only contains a textbox and a button. The user submits their email address using this webpage.What I am trying to do now is take the information submitted by the user and go to another website. Where my "website/program" gives the different website the entered email address, and clicks the submit button.
If I where to physically go to the different website, there would be a textbox to enter the email. But since I am accessing the website from my page "behind the scenes" I cant manually enter their email address.Is it possible to do this, if so how? Also, my code behind is in VB.

I need to create a VB.net app that automatically reads a html table. It should connect to a web address (eg "[URL]") and read it. I'll be happy if I could just get the full HTML. I was able to use this code to get the HTML of a regular website:
Dim strReply As String = "NULL"
Dim objHttpRequest As HttpWebRequest
Dim objHttpResponse As HttpWebResponse
objHttpRequest = HttpWebRequest.Create("[URL]")
objHttpResponse = objHttpRequest.GetResponse
Dim objStrmReader As New StreamReader(objHttpResponse.GetResponseStream)
strReply = objStrmReader.ReadToEnd()
This code sample will give me the HTML for the website [URL]. However it will not work with the website I want (eg "[URL]"), because when you access it via regular browser it will popup a browser dialog asking for credentials (user / pass). So when I run the code above for it, I'll get the exception:
The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required.
How do I set this up to use the credentials, before retrieving the HTML? This is actually my first web-related app.

I have had a few programming courses in college, but I'm far from a VB expert. I work at a bank and I want to copy information off of webpages and put it into an Excel worksheet. I created a macro that automatically opens up Internet explorer -- but really what I need is a subroutine (or a method) that copies information from 1.1Million records / screens and places the information into MS Excel.There are 1.1M records, so ideally-- I like it to copy all information over a weekend and come in on Monday and be done. At the very least, I would like a macro that can run off of a shortcut and copy all information on a webpage and puts information into each respective cell. Ie. copies the name field and puts into the name cell in Excel... address field into the address cell in Excel.

on my form i have a button and five textboxes... when i click the button it takes me to a website. on this website is a list of five items. i want to take these five items and place them in the 5 textboxes. up to now what i have been doing is highlighting the first item in the list on the website, right clicking and using the copy feature, then going back to the vb form and pasting the first item in textbox1... then go back to the website and highlight item two... return to the form and paste in textbox2.. then the same procedure for the next three items
is there a way to highlight all five items from the website, right click, select copy and then paste the information into the 5 textboxes on the form... one in each of the textboxes provided without doing it one at a time

Not sure if this is possible at all. I was hoping somebody could help point me in the right direction. Right now im not quite sure what to search for or what this would be called. Basicly I was wondering if it is possible to design a application in vb.net 2008 that could search a website for specific information.

I am writing an app which gets information from a website. Basically I load the webpage into a webbrowser control and parse the document text for what I need.
My problem is: I have a German version of windows. The webpage returned has the German version of the webpage. I require the English version but there is no way of specifying the language in the URL, so it must be picking up the default language of my operating system. How can I override this, is there a property of the Webbrowser control which I can set?

I want to extract some information from a web site (Bloomberg). This side has a search textbox with a onKeyUp event that, as far as I can understand, uses AJAX to create a table. Is it possible to insert some text in the textbox and then get the table created with AJAX? Given the source code of the page with the tabled already AJAXed (If you understand what I want to say here), I can easily retrieve the table. I just need to get the source code with the table already on it.

My university has a website that students can use to check stuff like their lesson schedules, latest grades, exam times, etc. Just general information about you and your study (after you have logged in of course).For interested, this is the website (not much use without a login obviously, but still): [URL]I have been thinking lately that it would be nice to have a desktop application that could give me the same information. However, I have absolutely no idea how that would work, and whether or not it is even possible. I mean, technically it should be possible for me to get the information (how else does the website get it) provided it is not secured (even when using the correct login details). I am sure the website communicates with a database somewhere. Does that mean I could theoretically also communicate with the database (probably: read from it only, not write) for example by executing queries?If that is possible, how do I figure out which queries to use for the different pieces of information? Obviously I don't know the details of the database so I can't just send a random query and expect it to work...

I'm able to create a List(Of String) containing a local directory structure of a LOCAL folder. I'm wondering how I would go about getting this structure for a website, in order to get a listing of all files of a particular type (for example: all .html files)
Something along the lines of what Xenu does would be perfect, but I don't know how to get started. I was thinking of doing something with parsing out "/" of the URL, but then you'd need to know the "deepest" file that exists on the site.. which you won't know...
Is there a way to get a folder listing of each directory of a site without having FTP access or something? (I'm assuming no due to security risks)
My only other option would be to crawl all hyperlinks within the site, and storing all the "internal" ones, but I don't know how to set up that loop, or how to know when it has reached the "deepest" level.
Kinda like when you delete a remote folder from FileZilla, it will traverse all sub-diretories first and delete those files.

Created an XSD file that represents my table structure from my database. Created a class file to hold my functions such as the one below.
Code sample:
Public Function GetUser(ByVal UserID As String) As xsdUser.UserDataTable
Dim SqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyDatabase").ConnectionString)
[Code]....
Now it seems odd to me to have two files doing what should be contained within just one file. I feel like I should have one class file called "User" and have member variables in there along with the class functions like the one above. But all the tutorials I see are using these data tables. On top of that I'm not sure how to handle the if statement at the end of the function. I don't think I would want to return a whole DataTable since I should only have one row, and I also don't know how I would handle an error if my function is supposed to return a data table. I suppose I could return an empty one and then if the table is empty in my code then I would handle it there, but this also seems messy.
Is this the common way of retrieving information from a stored procedure? Or is there a more up-to-date method that I'm not seeing in my search results?
