Dec 30, 2009The software company I work for offers data conversion as a service for new clients who have previously used other similar software. I've written a VB.NET application to automate common conversion operations, and have separate logic between known vendors.particular file layout has become rather common, but due to the nature of how this particular competitor's application stores information, certain fields mean one thing for one client, and another for a different client.Certain elements within this vendor's format change every time, so I've written the application to account for that. Because some data fields mean different things to different vendors, I have to change my mapping code every time. This wasn't an issue when I had one of these every six months or so, but these are becoming much more common and I would much rather find a way to further automate this process.

Feb 3, 2009I have a VB 2008 Forms application which does Powerpoint automation -- I am opening owerpoint in a minimized window from within my app and am trying to periodically put update messages in a textbox on my main form while the automation is running (it takes a few minutes to complete), but my form window does not want to show these messages until the powerpoint operations are finished. It seems as if I need to force a window refresh or something on my windows form, but I'm unclear how to do that. Below is some code that I'm using that illustrates what I'm trying to do. When I run it, "Step One / Step Two / Step Three" do not show up on my textbox until after the Powerpoint automations are over.

Aug 31, 2010Via VB.Net, is there any way to access the AutoSum feature that Excel has? I have a spreadsheet that I create and populate via a datatable using my application. I know how to sum based upon a predefined range (e.g., .cells(cnt + 1, 21).Formula = "=Sum(U3:U" & cnt & ")") but is there any way that I can just call a cell in my worksheet and have it AutoSum as if I was clicking the AutoSum button in Excel for that row? This would save me a lot of coding time based upon the logic my spreadsheet is going to need.

Dec 16, 2010In Excel 2010 (but also in older versions you can find a nice functionality - auto filter. When you just put some data in a row and press CTRL+SHIFT+L you activate Auto Filter. Now you press the down arrow and you get what I need... A new window appears. This window include buttons ordered in something like a context menu a textbox and a checkedlistbox. The windows definitely is not a classic form, because when you operate with the controls on it, the original excel windows is still the active window. The window can also be drawn outside of the main excel windows.

Re-protect An Excel Sheet, Enabling Auto-Filters?
Sep 12, 2011I'm using VB.net 2005 to input data from a database application into Excel files.I un-protect the sheets, input data into specific cells using named ranges, then re-protect the sheets.
This has worked fine so far, up until I ran into a file that is protected with auto-filtering enabled. When I re-protect the sheets, I can't seem to protect it while allowing the use of autofilter dropdowns. The dropdown arrows for the autofilter are greyed out and disabled.
Using the following code to re-protect the sheets after inputting the data.

works fine. The sheet is protected and I can use the autofilter drop downs. But when I use that same code in my VB.net project, the drop downs are not enabled.

To expand on this, my excel file has a column that lists test titles such as "WCOB 1120 Access Test". I want to have each specific test title changed to a number. Jan 22, 2010I'm using ODBC to export tables from a dataset to an Excel file without auto-formatting Excel or even needing to have Excel installed on the users PC. This works great but I just had a request to autosize the columns and make the header line bold. The only way I know of doing this is to fully automate Excel to control the row/column/cell formatting. Does anyone know a way of doing this without auto-formatting Excel?

The code runs nice, but it has a problem: After the user close the Excel application (click button X - note: no other instance of Excel exists), if you open the Windows's task manager, its possible to see the process Excel.exe.
If I open and close the Excel application, there is no process Excel.exe, but if I run my code with the Excel application openned, after the user close the Excel application, the process Excel.exe isn't finished.

Feb 23, 2011I want to encapsulate the use of Excel Interop to make it easier to use somehow in a reuseable library.So far, I have written some tests that work good altogether, except that between each test, I force Excel to quite so that it does have handle on the test file no more in order to be able to delete.Once I quit the application instance between after each of my tests, Excel seems to be no longer responding, causing Windows to display "Excel has stopped working and is looking for a solution"
message. This message lasts a few seconds, meanwhile Excel is closing, causing the hang on the file to occur and my tests to throw an exception like "Cannot access file because it is being used by another process..."
