Sorry if the title isn't very clear. This is a VB.NET (2010) question I have a superclass called "Device" which has a number of subclasses that inherit it. Some of those subclasses also have subclasses. In particular, I have a class called "TwinCatIntegerDevice" which inherits "TwinCatDevice" which inherits "Device."The relevant parts of Device look like this:

Build Failing When Adding A String, No Visible Errors

Mar 14, 2011

After adding a string to the program from the resources the build always fails, and removing the string and the code to load the string does not solve the problem, as the build still fails. We've been using multiple versions of the program since this started happening with the most updated one, and adding the string is what started the failure in building even though we added other elements (like an exit button) and other forms without it failing. With the one that started with the build failures we've tried it on all types of computers and it does not manage to build on any of them, even one's with a new installation of Visual Basic Express 2010.

The exact line added that apparently makes the build fail is:

PictureAndInfo.infoBox.Text = My.Resources.StegmeierBreweryString

And the string added to the Resources isn't anything unusal compared ot the rest we have but it is this is:

The Stegmaier Brewery business began in 1857 when Charles Stegmaier first set up a shop. Since then the Stegmaier business has grown greatly. The size of their operation has grown from the original shop to the large building pictured to the left (opened in 1863 and purchased from Stegmaier in 1978). The Stegmaier Brewery Company was purchased in 1974 by Lion, Inc. and Stegmaier Beer is still produced today by Lion, Inc. and remains a popular choice among consumers.

VS 2005 Dynamically Adding Timer?

Apr 17, 2009

I have an application that i have developed which requires me to run a method in one of the classes on a timely basis. Basically, calling the method at an interval.I can do this if there's only a single object, but the number of objects that i have to create depends on the number of entries in a table. I was wondering if it's possible to add timer control dynamically and make the tick even call objects' methods at an interval.

Adding Item To A Listbox From A System.Timer

For the last couple of days I been trying to add items to a listbox from another class within a system.timer.

They just don't appear in the listbox. I don't get any errors. The items just don't get added :S.

I have:

Form.vb
make object of Control
Control.vb
Here I have a system.timer

In the Timer_Elapsed method I do this: form.listbox1.items.add("hello")

But it just doesn't work... When I add a new item to the listbox1 from the constructor or another method that has nothing to do with the timer it works...

.net - Edit UserControl Subclass In Windows Form Designer?

Jul 1, 2011

In VS2010, targeting Framework 4.0, I have a UserControl which contains a TableLayoutPanel with an empty second row.Is it possible to add items to this second row using the Windows Forms Designer, or do I have to do it all via code?

EDIT: In reply to Hans Passant's comment, the linked question references a UserControl being used inside another control.I am asking a question about inherited controls.I have created the following test code, where TestControl is a UserControl containing a TableLayoutPanel named "TableLayoutPanel1":

Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.Windows.Forms.Design
<Designer(GetType(testDesigner))>[code]....

creates a control which, when viewed in the designer, contained a TableLayoutPanel named "TableLayoutPanel1" which is not designer-editable.Creating a new UserControl, not inheriting from either of the previous UserControls, and then placing a TestControl into it creates an instance of TestControl with a Designer-editable TableLayoutPanel named "TestControl1.TableLayoutPanelX".Is there any way to make the TestInheritedControl class, shown above, Designer-editable?

.net - Subclass Inherit A Constructor - Error 1 Too Many Arguments To 'Public Sub New()"

Jun 25, 2009

I have a base class, "B", which has two constructors, one with no paremeters and the other that accepts one param, an integer. I have a subclass, "S", which inherits from "B" and does not define any constructors in it. I create an instance of S, attempting to pass to the constructor an integer.

I get the error: Error 1 Too many arguments to 'Public Sub New()"

This surprises me because I thought that if a constructor is not defined in the subclass, S, that the base class constructor method, specifically, the one with the single integer param would be invoked w/o an error. why I am getting this error? Are constructors a special case?

ASP.NET UpdatePanel Timeout And 500 Errors With Custom Errors?

Sep 23, 2011

I have a .net application that uses customerrors web.config module to display meaningful messages for errors. It works without any issues for 500 errors/exceptions caused by non-ajax and ajax components (updatepanel). However, in a scenario where updatepanel's asynchronous request times out, there is no error raised at all. I was able to see the timeout in firebug and come up with a solution that would at least display the error message as an alert and then redirect the user to the 500 error page using javascript but it's not quite doing what the rest of the application does in case of an unhandled errors like these. I basically just want everything to go through "LogEvent" mechanism so based on the severity of the error, it does the necessary work.This 500 error page doesn't have anything in the Server.GetLastError() for these timeout scenarios. Is this an expected behaviour? Can it be changed so I do have access to these timeouts in Server.GetLastError() OR maybe just run this error through "LogEvent" mechanism? Is there a better/more graceful way to handle this issue?

Below is my code to give you an idea, not exactly what I have in my application but pretty close.

Web.Config
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Errors/ErrorUnknown.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite">
<error statusCode="500" redirect="~/Errors/Error500.aspx" />
</customErrors>

VS2008/VB: Moving Subclass VB Code To Inherited Base Class - Where Should Variables/objects Be Declared

Jun 3, 2009

In re-engineering a windows forms application, I find that a lot of code-behind in the various form classes is duplicative and I'm trying to centralize as many procedures as possible into a base class which can be inherited and used by the subclassed forms.

This process seems to be going well and is making the code in my subclasses much simpler and hopefully easier to maintain, but I'm not sure where to draw the line between leaving code in the subclasses and engineering for generic resusability and moving it to the base class.

Specifically, in some subclasses I have code which manipulates variables and objects specific to the subclass, and although I could move the code-behind into the base class, the base class code references specific objects which are needed to compile. For example, each subclass manipulates a databound datagridview and form detail controls which allows the user to select between multi-record and detailed single-record views of a datatable.

In Visual Basic 2008 do I need to declare dummy data objects in the base class so that the base class will compile? Or is there a way to indicate that the data objects will be provided by the subclass?

Get The 'Progress' Dialog To Display Immediately After The 'Install Icon' Dialog Disappears?

Jun 4, 2009

I have a simple desktop application that uses a .NET setup project (.msi file) to perform the installation. On the first installation, everything proceeds in a timely fashion with good feedback for the user.The problem occurs when the user is installing the latest version of the application over an old version on their machine.There is an unacceptably long delay of about 60 to 180 seconds from the time the installer's 'Welcome' dialog [It's not the Welcome dialog, I've removed that from the Start section of the setup project and replaced it with a CheckBox dialog to ask if the user wants a shortcut on the desktop] disappears until the 'Progress' dialog appears. The user sees minute(s) of blank screen and thinks the install has stopped or failed.

In the setup project properties, I've got the 'DetectNewerInstalledVersion' and 'RemovePreviousVersions' properties set to true. So, I believe that while nothing appears to be happening, the installer is actually removing the old version. The 'Progress' dialog does not appear until the new version begins installation.I've been trying to either:

a) Get the 'Progress' dialog to display immediately after the 'Install Icon' dialog disappears

b) Show another dialog while the Uninstall is running to let the user know that the setup is still running and everything is OK.

I have been unsuccessful with both methods. I'm using VS 2008 SP1?
