I have been developing in VB.net for a cople of years now. I really miss the increment and decrement operators for integers that I grew attached to while using Java and C#. I need to write an interface to get data to/from our data files.
We have a low level class that holds field values for each record read from the files.
This just holds two values, the value read from the file (DBValue) and the updated value that may need to be written back to the file (CurrentValue).
These values may be any of the standard value types (integer, date etc) or a string.
Either value (DBValue or CurrentValue) may be null if not defined.
I have written the class to manage this data which works fine while option strict is NOT on.
But we have an office policy of having option strict on all the time.
When I put option strict on, my object value comparisons fail with the error: "Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity."
Question, how should I change the following code to handle option strict on ...

I recently downloaded VB 2010 Express so i am quite new to the language, but i have worked with dark basic, which seems to b very similar.Anyway, my problem is that i cannot seem to correctly set out my array of a custom type/class. i am trying to create two arrays, one of available entities and another of selected entities of which the user selects the entities to be dealt with in irrelevant ways. i have creates a button (called test) which adds some entities to the available list and all the entities come back the same value but they shouldnt be as you'll c in the code. i have run the step into command a found that "available.item(#).Name = " will change all of the entity's names.As of current i am working with lists as the array kept asking for a 'new' statement but i couldnt figure out where to put it.[code]

After reading the forum I was able to append .First() to noPic at the myNoPic declaration and finally get a result but that only gave me the first element. I have been trying to solve a problem related to using RolesProviders in MVC.Basically I would like to an additional set of criteria to the roles table so that a user can switch roles based on what they are doing on the site.However as simple as it may sound its proving to be a nightmare. I cannot for love nor money come up with a solution. I have tried overloading the provider, creating extension methods (which never work with the Roles class) but finally I decided to simply create a reference to my own custom provider and just completely bypass the whole User, Roles class.Now I am getting a ridiculous error which states that I cannot cast MyProvider class to an instance of MyProvider class? All I am doing is calling the Roles.Provider method and casting its return value to my custom provider class (which inherits from RolesProvider). The asp.net forums are a waste of time since no one ever answers the questions and there are simply no examples of extending the Roles/Membership model without using SQL server.

View 1 RepliesIf you assign a value to a nullable integer via a ternary operator, it can't become null..While this question may seem like a duplicate of many, it is actually being asked for a specific reason.Take this code, for example: Dim n As Integer? = If(True, Nothing, 1) In that code, the ternary expression should be returning Nothing, but it's setting n to 0. If this were C#, I could say default(int?) and it would work perfectly. Now it looks like I am going to have to ditch the ternary and use a regular If block, but I really want to use the ternary. If Nothing were truly VB.NET's equivalent to C#'s default, how can you explain this behavior?

I am using a code to generate an id for a table.But it is giving 'Conversion from type dbnull to type integer is not valid' exception.Now I know that this is due to the table being an empty set.But it works properly if there is already a row in the table.
