Search A String Buffer With Nulls (chr(0))?

Sep 25, 2009

I need to search a buffer for a string of characters.The buffer is essentially a binary file (it's an image) and contains lots of chr(0) characters.The string I need to locate also contains chr(0) characters. In fact it is the following string:

chr(100) & chr(0) & chr(0) & chr(163)

This is a marker in the image file for items I need to process.So I though I would do the following:

Dim sFileBuffer as String = system.io.file.readalltext("myimagefile")
Dim sLookFor as String = chr(100) & chr(0) & chr(0) & chr(163)
Dim iLocation as Integer = sFileBuffer.IndexOf(sLookFor)

The problem is that, although the characters in sLookFor definitely exist inside of sFileBuffer - IndexOf will always return -1 (not found).I tried the following:

Dim Marker() as Byte = {100, 0, 0 , 163}
Dim sLookFor as String = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(Marker)
Dim sFileBuffer as String = system.io.file.readalltext("myimagefile", Encoding.UTF8)
Dim iLocation as Integer = sFileBuffer.IndexOf(sLookFor)

But this appears to only find occurrences of Chr(100) & Chr(0) - not the full 4 character sequence I desire. It appears to see the second Chr(0) as a termination of the search string.I think the sticking point here is the null. Yes - I can string.replace(chr(0), Chr(255)) in both the sLookFor and the sFileBuffer and adjust my search accordingly - but that seems like a mess to me.Is there not a way to search a buffer of binary data? I've tried working with byte arrays - but there appears to be no way to easily search for a sequence of byte values - just individual elements in the array.

MySQL Parameters / AddWithValue - How To Avoid To Check For Nulls

Sep 15, 2010

Let's say I have a MySql stored procedure that inserts a record with some nullable CHAR fields. In VB.NET if I don't check for Nothing (or Null in other languages), I get an exception from the db driver, so I write:
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
command.Parameters.AddWithValue("_name", if(name Is Nothing, "", name)).Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;

And this is the first thing I don't like; I'd like to pass Nothing and the driver knows it has to put NULL in the Db. But then, in the stored procedure, I have to check back the field if it is empty:
INSERT INTO mytable
(name, -- other 200 char fields)
VALUES
(NULLIF(_name, ''),
-- other 200 char fields
)

I have to check for nothingness/emptiness twice. Is there a better, more direct, way? Even worse, for non reference types (i.e: Integers) the check for nothingness makes no sense, since a primitive type can't be nothing (yes, I could set an Integer to a non meaningful value, say -1 for a positive id, but...).

Inserting A New Row To Database?

May 7, 2009

My problem is when I try adding a new appointment I get an error that says ""Column 'AppID' does not allow nulls."" Editing existing appointments is fine and it updates the DB no problem. I don't have an INSERT statement right now (which might be the issue) so I was thinking of doing this: INSERT INTO [tablename] ( [column1], [column2], ... ) VALUES ( [value1], [value2], ...) Only problem with that is I would need to use the textbox names for the VALUES, and that form that pops up to gather appointment info is from a third party, and I can't find the names of any text boxes

Inserting Into A Database?

Apr 13, 2010

I've written the following code to add a new record to a database:

Public Shared Sub AddTopicUser(ByVal UserID As Integer, ByVal TopicCode As String)

Dim RowsAffected As Integer
Dim ATUDCONN As New OleDbConnection
ATUDCONN.ConnectionString = DBCONNSTR
Dim ATUDCMD As New OleDbCommand("INSERT INTO tblSubscriptions (UserID, TopicCode, Completed) Values (@UserID, @TopicCode, @Completed)", ATUDCONN)

[Code]...

I recieve no errors from the code, but when i open the database after - the record has not been added.

I have checked that the values being passed as parameters to the function are valid. I was curious as to whether I was formatting the OleDbCmd correctly, which is why i added a message box function to show be the value of the connection string which at runtime is: when they're not being added to the db?

Not Inserting Into The Database?

Aug 1, 2011

So I have the following that seems to work fine in MS SQL Server management Studio and seems (but isn't) to be working as its doing a re-direct to another page after the insertion of data...Basically, I pull in all the data from the text boxes and hidden fields, convert that info to strings and do my insert statement. Now in MS SQL SMS The following insert statement works:

insert into [Contacts].[dbo].[contactInformation] values ('Adam', 'john', '16', '' , '' , 'm', '', '');

You can tell from the above which are allowed and which are not allowed to be null. any ways. Why is this not inserting data into my database? is it because of

cmd.CommandText = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text

DateTimePicker ( Datediff) After Connected To Database?

Apr 15, 2010

i am using Visual Studio 2008 and VB.NET 2008 and SQL Server 2005 as the database. I just finished designing & writing codes for a customer information and , however after it has been connected to the database only one of the datetimepicker can be click, and the rest of the function including in the form are not working!it seem that the form stuck and NOT responding. i cant even close the form (X button), so i have to stop the process using compiler (visual studio 2008), however if i press the 'Delete' button before the 'Add' button, it will successfully delete the data.. but if i disconnected the form from the database, (disabled the form_load codes [put 'quote']) the both of datetimepicker will work and able to view the date interval (after pressing the 'Calculate Period' button) in addition how to make it appear automatically in screen without using the button? below are the code, I try to make some other form.. but it is still the same

Saving Date From DateTimePicker To Database?

Dec 4, 2011

I have an issue with date format in my SSRS. I am saving date from DateTimePicker to database. From there I am taking display in my datagridview using following

dgv.items(0,2).value=Format(Cdate(dsSaver.tblInv.rows(0).items(0)),"dd-MMM-yyyy")

This displays it correctly (04-Nov-2011) but when I take date from the same database to my SSRS using

="Dated: " &Format(cdate(Fields!InvDate.Value),"dd-MMM-yyyy")

It displays it like 11-Apr-2011.

I have tested all winforms fare displaying it right but all SSRS are displaying it wrong.

VS 2005 Datetimepicker Value To Access Database

Nov 8, 2009

OK, before I throw my laptop out the window... I need to insert data into my Access Database from my VB.Net2005 application. I have written and re-written this code, trying everything I can find from the web and I've had no luck. I'm getting a {"Data type mismatch in criteria expression."} error on the ExecuteNonQuery line - I'm fairly certain that it's the DateTimePickers, as I rem them out and the code works fine. However, I've tried everything - changed the column in my database to Text, changed the .Value to .Text, .Value.ToLongDateString, and every time I'm getting the same error. One of the things I read on line was that I need to use parameters in order to pass the DateTime - I need to pass the Date and Time (date format is not important, but I require the hh:mm:ss format for the time). The fields currently default to the current date/time which is perfect, but I read that depending on how you pass the data, you may run into problems if the user does not pick the drop box (leaving it as the default).

Inserting New Records Into Database

I typically dont use a dataset in a case of new data insertion to the database. But then again, I will run in a problem the weather the inserting data already exsit in the database. Therefore i need to perform a search first. However, if i follow this it will take slow down the application (if the table has 1 million records). One way i could optmimize this is to load the whole table in to a dataset then the application doesnt have to go to a back end trip nwo it can search inthe dataset. Is this the standard way for inserting records?
