LINQ To Objects - GrandParent / Parent And Children List
Feb 3, 2010
Basically, I am trying to write a LINQ to Objects statement where the relationship is a grandparent, parent, child relationship. (You could also call it a Master Detail relationship.)
In Legacy code here is a simplified version what I am trying to accomplish.
Dim coverages As New List(Of Coverage)
Dim coverage As Coverage
For Each rl In oClaimsPolicy.RiskLocations
coverage = New Coverage
coverage.Level = "Location"
[Code] .....
If is it not clear one Location can have many Items and one Item can have many Coverages. I basically want to list the items and show the relationship between grandparent (Location), parent (Item) and child (Coverage).

I would like to create list of child objects from list of parent object. Like If i have list of bookingroom which has one member room then i would like to create list of room from it.
eg. code:
Dim BookingRoomList As List(Of BookingRoom) = New List(Of BookingRoom)
Dim RoomList As List(Of Room) = New List(Of Room)

I have four children in a parent container. Each child form is a test for the user to type correct answers into text boxes. Option to open each form is on a menu strip in the parent. In form load, I have disabled all but the first form option. I only want the second form to become available if the first form answers are correct. I would like to figure this out on my own as much as possible. I have searched on line but since I am not sure what to ask, I have not found and answer. Can someone get me started in the right direction? Perhaps some reading that would explain how to go about this, or what I should be typing into google to get what I'm looking for.

I have a list of objects, each with 2 relevant properties: "ID" and "Name". Lets call the list "lstOutcomes".I need to check the list for duplicates (meaning object1.ID = object2.ID, etc.) and set a flag (valid = false, or something) if there is at least one duplicate. Also, it would be nice to send a message to the user mentioning the "Name" of the object, when it fails.I am sure I will need to use the Group By operator to do this, but I am not used to doing that in LINQ, and the examples out there are just not helping me. This article seems to be close to what i need, but not quite and it's in C#.
Here is a starting stab at it...
Dim duplist = _
(From o As objectType In lstOutcomes _

I have a query that 'selects' object of a type:
Dim l as IList(Of Foo) = (From dataRow As DataRow In table.Select()
Where CStr(dataRow("Column1")) = "A"
Select New Foo(CStr(dataRow("Column1")), _
CStr(dataRow("Column2")))).ToList()
What's happening is that if i set a break-point to the constructor of Foo and step, the constructor is hit and the parameters are loaded with the arguments. However, l has empty Foo objects (the members in every object are Nothing). What could be happening here?

I have
Dim objectsList as List(Of Object) = GetAllObjects()
' Filter from Objects just Persons '
Dim peopleList as List(Of Person) = ???
What is the most efficient and effective LINQ expression to do it?
EDIT
1 Dim selectedObjects As List(Of Object) = GetAllObjects()
2 Dim selectedPeople As IEnumerable(Of Person)= selectedObjects.OfType(Of Person)
3 Dim people As List(Of Person) = selectedPeople.ToList()
Error on 3:
Value of type
'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of

I figure I should use 'Aggregate' but apparently I am getting it wrong First I get a list of my Entity objects Dim employers As List(Of myEntity) = (New XXXX()).getZZZ(userName, userType) Then I figured this would be a way to put all the names in a string Dim names as String = employers.Aggregate(Function(current, [next]) current.Name & " " & [next].Name)

I am having so trouble with the ToUpper() procedure with strings. I am using LINQ to find unique values in a list of objects. In that whole process I set the values to compare to all lowercase in order to get a proper list. My goal is to populate a dropdown list with the values. I'm attempting to set the first letter of of the string to uppercase and keep the rest lowercase however the toUpper() procedure is not working?

Dim strOutput As String
Dim intStringLength As Integer = strIn.Length - 1
strOutput = strIn.Substring(0, 1)

I don't know if this is doable, maybe with Linq, but I have a List(Of MyType):
Public Class MyType
Property key As Char
Property description As String
End Class
And I want to create a Dictionary(Of Char, MyType) using the key field as the dictionary keys and the values in the List as the dictionary values, with something like:
New Dictionary(Of Char, MyType)(??)
Even if this is doable, internally it will loop through all the List items, I guess?

How do you set it up so that a treeview control will select/deselect all children of a parent when it is selected/deselected? Is there a property you set or do you have to write code to do it?

I'm working on a drag-and-drop method to copy items from a listview control to a treeview. I've got the drag and drop working, but I'm hoping to limit the ability to drag items that create a child of a child. Ideally, if someone drags an item from the listview to the Treeview and the drop the listview item over a child, it would drop the dragged item to the parent.

I'm experimenting with a plugin architecture for my company's internal business system. I have managed to read all .DLLs in a Plugin folder which implement a specific interface. What I am trying to figure out is the best method of communication between the "host" MDI parent application and forms that will be in the .DLLs which I intend to make MDI children.
Currently, I am returning just ToolStripMenuItem objects from the .DLLs to add to the MDI Parent. I've also tested that events wired in the .DLLs to the ToolStripMenuItems do propagate to the code in the .DLLs. I've also managed to return a Form object via the interface and open that form, as the Plugin folder is being "scanned".
However, I am not clear how I would make these forms MDI children. Also, any other forms living in the .DLLs will also have to be MDI children. I created a VS 2008 Addin project just to see what's going on, and it seems that the Addin accepts an Application object on which it adds to the ToolStripMenuItems and does other operations. The code to build the menu inside the .DLL. This is opposite of what I have done so far, where the MDI requests a ToolStripMenuItem from each .DLL and adds the returned object to its own menu.
Would designing my plugin architecture to accept an application object in the same manner the only way I could get forms to open as an MDI child? Am I asking for other, currently unknown to me, headaches by NOT passing in the application object to the .DLL?

long story short, I have created a ListView type control, using UserControls for the parent control and the ListViewItems. Most the of the control is written and works fine, right up to the point where I tried to replicate the 'Control.SelectedItems(0).Index' property and the 'SelectedIndexChanged' event.
Each child object knows its index value, and could pass this value via the SelectedIndexChanged event (assuming this is how it works in a normal ListView control -- user clicks on an item, and that item fires an event updating the selected index value in the parent object).
How does the child object raise an event in the parent object? I have a feeling this could be done with Delegates, but I'm still learning about their usage.

I'm doing a new interface for my app and I'm using MDI forms. On the parent form I want some objects like Labels and ToolStrips with Transparent BackColor but even when I change the MDI Client BackColor to Color.Whatever or the BackgroundImage and apply a Transparent Object it just doesn't get the color behind it but gets DarkGray instead .
I changed the MDIClient.BackColor with: Me.Controls.OfType(Of MdiClient).First().BackColor = Color.Red

I am developing a new class which is a control that inherits from the "Panel" class. In this new class, I have three objects that are generated every time I create a new instance of the class. For simplicity, I will call this class "garage" and the three objects "BMW," "Lexus," and "Acura." So each new garage has three types of cars.
how can I share a variable from the Parent class with all of it's child objects? i.e. The garage has an array variable called "tires" which all three cars use. Rather than create each car object with the tires parameter, I would just like to keep the tires parameter in the parent class so that all my child objects can use it. I know that normally the parent class should provide the child class with all information when creating the child but it would seem redundant to pass the entire tires array each time since all three cars use the same tires and the tires object never change.

Using the XML elements below, I am trying to locate all table elements where they have a column@Name equal to a specific item such as "email" and return the Database@Location and Table@Name. My LINQ statement returns the proper table@name but for each element found returns the first database@Location for both. So my question is, how can I search for a column@Name and return the proper Database@Location and Table@Name [Code]

I'm having a bit of a 'brain doner' moment here
I have a list of Objects. Each of these Objects contains a list of other Objects (pseudo code) :-
Private Structure Object1
dim Name as string
dim ListOfObject2 as List(Of Object2)
[Code]....
I need to sort the list of Object1 by the Value in Object2. I have a comparison class which sorts Object2 by its Value nicely.

I'm having a nightmare with LINQ. I've got a table of Projects, and each project has many InvoiceHeaders. The Invoice header had a field AmountNet - the value of the invoice.
I want to retrive, for arguments sake, all of the fields from Projects, with the count of invoice headers and the sum of AmountNet. I.e. list of my projects, how many invoices I've raised and the value.
Doesn't sound hard does it.... well, I've just spent the best part of two hours charging through Google and SO to find a solution.

I was wondering if there is a neat way do to this, that DOESN'T use any kind of while loop or similar, preferably that would run against Linq to Entities as a single SQL round-trip, and also against Linq To Objects. I have an entity - Forum - that has a parent-child relationship going on. That is, a Forum may (or in the case of the top level, may not) have a ParentForum, and may have many ChildForums. A Forum then contains many Posts.
What I'm after here is a way to get all the Posts from a tree of Forums - i.e. the Forum in question, and all it's children, grandchildren etc. I don't know in advance how many sub-levels the Forum in question may have. (Note - I know this example isn't necessarily a valuble use case, but the Forum object model one is one that is familar to most people, and so serves as a generic and accessible premise rather than my actual domain model.)

I have a linq query like that:
Elementos = From b In Elementos Where b.Value.IdGrupo = 0 Select b
"Elementos" is a dictionary(of long, MyObject). MyObject has approximately 50 properties.
The problem I have is that I have a new requirement to accept string parameter with a "where" condition. Something like "property1>10 and property2 like 'anystring' or property3<=25". (That means any property could have a condition. I have string and numeric properties.)
I'd like to keep using linq, adding the condition as it comes. I'm aware that it could produce an exception if the condition is misspelled or something, but that's acceptable (by try catchs). I wouldn't want to parse the string to build parameters or anything.

I am creating a tool that interfaces with an API for a CD/DVD burner. I have created several custom classes that will hold the information for the disk sets (which consist of a data path and a label file among other information. The DiskSet class has a list of Include objects. My proposed XML output would be something similar to the following:
<DiskSets>
<DiskSet>
<Name>MySet 1</Name>
[code].....
I am attempting to traverse the Includes collection (I have tried List and Binding List as I am also using this in a pair of datagridview controls) and it keeps returning Expression of type 'Object is not queryable. Make sure you are not missing an assembly reference and/or namespace import for the LINQ provider." How can I use LINQ to pull a list of the Include objects under each DiskSet object for transformation into XML? I am hoping to keep this restricted to this one block of code if possible.
