Linq To Xml - Unexpected Search Results
Mar 10, 2011
Just when I was thinking that I had Linq To Xml sussed I'm faced with yet another error! I think if I was to understand the linq search process in general better I might have more success, so any good links regarding that are also welcome. To my problem however; using the code below:

I am writing an app in VB2005 that makes a call to my cars ECU. It sends ok but during the DataReceived event I am getting an unusual result.I am trying to find out how many bytes are in the buffer so I can set up an array to write the data to so I have used the following.
intBTR = _Port.BytesToRead
_Port.Read(bytIncoming, 0, intBTR -1)

Consider the following snippet:
Dim Arext() = {"*.ttf","*.ttc"}
For Each foundFile In FileSystem.GetFiles(srcdir, SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, arExt)
[code]....
The unexpected result is that not all the files specified in arext() are returned by this code. Running the same code twice on the same subset of files does NOT produce consistent results.I'm seeing, probably, 90% of the files with the other 10% not being included?

x = 4.2 - 0.1
vb.net gives 4.1000000000000005
python gives 4.1000000000000005
Excel gives 4.1
Google calc gives 4.1
What is the reason this happens?

I'm having problems with the following Linq query (demandNb is a filter option, as a string):
[Code]...
My goal is to get all demands for the database if the filter fields is empty. If there is a filter, the function should return all demands that match the filter. Currently, when I try to convert the IQueryable collection to a list using .ToList(), the following error is thrown: Conversion from string "" to type 'Double' is not valid.

I have a database with a simple flyweight table referenced by another table. Let's call them, respectively, Category and Product.The Product table has several columns, one of which is a foreign key column (complete with constraint) to the CategoryID to a row of the Category table. It's simple, and I have many of them in this particular database.
I am using Linq in Visual Studio 2008 to represent this data in my application. Both tables appear as normal, and neither have anything special in their properties that would indicate the behaviour I'll describe.In the database itself, there are several Product rows which have CategoryID=1. There are two or three that have CategoryID=2. However, when the data is loaded into my application through Linq, iterating through context.Products shows that the first three have CategoryID=1, CategoryID=2 and CategoryID=3, and all the rest of the rows have CategoryID=NULL. This is not how it appears in the database. There are no other anomalies in this database.

Edit: Here is a much more simpler example of this issue (i've deleted my original question):
Dim numbers1 As New List(Of Int32)({1, 2, 3})
Dim numbers2 As New List(Of Int32)({3, 4, 5})
For Each n1 In numbers1
' no warning '
Dim contains = numbers2.Contains(n1)
Next
[Code]...
The local variable number1 is redundant and makes the code less readable as @Meta-Knight already has emphasized. Note: All three ways are safe and give the correct result.

I have a query using LINQ-to-SQL. It queries an underlying database table Rooms. It uses Where conditions to narrow down the results, namely:
Gender.Current Occupancy < Max Occupancy Available Flag is Checked I know this should return results but it keeps returning an empty set.Code is below
[code]...
UPDATE: I've verified that the issue is with the statement where sh.is_available = 1, which doesn't make sense since this is a bit field.

Before LINQ I would have my main application return the results of a SQL query into a dataSet. I would then transfer the dataset as a parameter to the external dll. Now I am bringing through a LINQ to SQL query that is returned as an IQueryable(Of vClientTable) object. I want to be able to transfer that set of vClientTable results to my external dll in order for the dll to work with the data included in the results.
I am probably doing it all wrong as well as trying to do it all wrong, but would like some advice on what would be the best method to use.
DB Query
Public Shared Function getClientData(ByVal clientID As Int32) As IQueryable(Of vClientTable)
Try
Dim r = From p In dbLINQ.vClientTable _
[Code]....
Obviously in the external dll it has no idea what an IQueryable(vClientData) object is and even if I create a dbml file and datacontext in my external project for the dll that includes the same class to the DB table/view it still says that the objects are different types.

I'm doing some XLINQ in VB for work. I basically need to pull some values from a small chunk of XML as listed here:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Fields>
<typeQtyRadioButtonList>1</typeQtyRadioButtonList>
<cmbQtyCheck>Reject</cmbQtyCheck>
[code]....
... Leaving out the implementation of the For Each loop....So I have stuck a break point on the for each and the collection has no elements in it.

I'm having trouble populating an object from an XML file. I've copied an example I've found almost exactly, with variable names changed, but I keep getting the "Enumeration yielded no results" exception.
Here is my code:
[code]...
Essentially, the XML query is supposed to return the title and the description for every Property which has an element called Language Code, which is equal to "en-us". I have a feeling that my problem lies in my XML code, but I've been stuck here for a long time now.

I'm using visual studio 2010 and sql server 2005 to store my data. I'm creating a system that will allow me to find/search for records that are stored within the database. Thing is, i have 2 separate forms for this - one is the find/search page which allows you to enter in as many fields as you want (the more you enter, the more efficient the search is) and the second one is the find/search results page which will show the results from the search.
I'm not using a datagrid as i've already created these forms myself. I'm on a tight schedule because i've spent so much time already trying to get this to work. Do i need to create another dataset and tableadapter and bind the text boxes? how will i code the find/search button so the search will be carried out and the results will appear in the other form?

i'm working with a sql (2005) database and using visual studio 2010. I've created a system where one of the forms is a find/search form. A user can enter in for example, a customerID and once they click on "find/search" the customerID will be searched in the database and if found, all relevant information about the customer will be retrieved and displayed in another form (find/search results page). I realise that this can be done using an SQL statement like follows
searchStr = "SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE CustomerID LIKE CIDTextBox.Text%"
What i'm unsure about is how to execute this SQL statement once the "find/search" button has been clicked and how to display the founded results in another form.

Try
Dim allelements As HtmlElementCollection = WebBrowser1.Document.All
For Each webpageelement As HtmlElement In allelements
Dim Name As String = webpageelement.GetAttribute("Name")
[code].....
I let the program search in the "element" parts of the html code,now the last ting I need to do is: I need to get the ID number of every part of the search results.

I would like to have an option to pin the window that contains search results. Currently our application has a search for for instance sales order. Then, when the end user opens a sales order, the search screen is closed, and the sales order is opened for view or edit. However, the users is complaining (with good reason) that they want an option to keep the search window open. Thus, something like a push pin/thumbnail that I can test the state before I open the sale order. If it is pinned, then leave the screen open. If not, close the search screen. I've seen a couple of 3rd party controls like this, but we like to stick to built in/native components only.

I (think I) want to develop a custom control for my program in VB .net where I type into a textbox and simple search results will then be displayed underneath it (from a predefined set of items). Like auto suggest in google search.I believe the combobox does something similar to this but I think it only works on prefixes.At the moment I have a separate search form from which I use to filter a lot of possibilities and then use drag-and-drop to get the desired item into a TextBox.So ideally I want to combine this with a TextBox into which one can start typing at which point some results will be displayed and a user can select the item they want. (Say, an item from a list of products)

In my application, I have a search query textbox (txtSearch) that works well with one-word queries with the following LINQ:[code]So how would I make the above query more generic (ie: able to handle any number of words in a query)?I should note that the object being queried is a List of strings pulled from an Access database. As it stands, this application only queries the database once and I'd like to keep it that way if possible.
