I have been searching for days to get some code that will do this. I need to open a spreadsheet and read maybe 2 dozen cells into variables in a VB.Net program. Specifics are: MS Office 2003, Vis Basic of VB.Net 2008. Everything seems to revolve around the following lines which do not work for me. Im trying to load a price of an item from a prices file (Items). The variable (ItemName) is taken from a listox populated from the file on another form. And (Item) is the structure which i saved the prices information for into (Items).
What im trying to do is take the string from the listbox and change the textbox (txtCurrentPrice) text into the price for the highlighted item, which is also the name of the (txtItem) textbox.
However i cant find a way to reference the Item.(ItemName) to get the correct price from within the file, as ItemName isnt a member of the Items structure Item instance.

ItemName holds the name of one of the variables saved in the structure. So say if ItemName was holding "IridescentRoll" As its string I would be trying to find Item.IridescentRoll, which would show me the price of IridescentRoll which im trying to put into the textbox. and As Item.IridescentRoll = 3.35 it would display 3.35 in the textbox.
As you have probably guessed, the Item.ItemName doesnt work ('ItemName is not a member of...'
Is there any way to write this without having to create a new record for each item? As that would take a while, and im not sure i have the time x.X
I am pretty good with visual basic and visual studio, but the one problem I have is saving... I am currently creating a game, and it has a lot of variables, I want o be able to save all those variables to a text file and then re-open it later. When it is open, i want the variables to have the original value from the text document.
To sum it up: I need variables to be saved in a text file, and then be able to open the text file back and have the variables have the proper values from the text file.
I have been searching around google, and I found ideas, but I have no idea how to use them. Like using XML or saving a table with " TextFile.WriteFromTable" "TextFile.ReadToTable" but I don't exactly get how to use those (the posts weren't too clear)
I have made a program that loads files from the network and changes them. It all works great and I must say that I did not expect that I could learn some basics so fast. Any way, When I create a new project with a new form, I can create a button, and if I click on it, I can type the things I want it to do. However, I want the program to load a file on startup of the program (load some variables from files). I tried copy/pasting some pieces of sourcefile that work above the part where it start the actions of clicking a button, but that does not work. If I manage to remove all the compile errors and start the program, it still loads nothing untill I click a button. So my question is, how can I make the program do anything without clicking a button. Example, read a txt from a harddrive called test.txt and save that as a variable "computername" in the program.

As far as i can see, this has a few advantages over the usual implementation, primary your inability to access the variable outside of the property, as well as not having to use an additional variable.
My question to you is: Which of those is the "right" way to do it? I know that static variables have additional overhead, but is it bad enough to create, in my personal opinion, unclearer code that can be misused easier? How much performance do you lose compared to the "traditional" method? How does it matter for small classes compared to huge factories?
I don't know whether it is simple or not because i am new to programming. my requirement is : In my vb.net winform application, the filenames of the files present in "D:Project" willbe displayed in DataGridView1 control. Now I want to load these files one after another into memory stream buffer and add the headers("ID","Name","Class") to the content in the file. On the main screen of the program, I want to show all the saved quotes from the xml file in a datagridview, I just need to show the date, category, author, title of the quotes, I also need the datagridview to refresh everytime a new quote is saved.
I've written the following sub to load a comma delimited file into my datagrid view but it's hanging up when it attempts to load the first two values into the cells of the datagridview. I think it's having trouble adding the cells to the datagrid. I have tried writting them directly using the .text of the specific row and cell but when I incremented to the next row it hung up because the row didn't exist (I think).

I have an application that reads data values (numeric) from a data file. Due to a change in data requirements, I need to put these into a paramArray so I can calculate the MEDIAN of the series of numbers. I have seen some of the MSDN examples and they are all good except they load the paramArray with ArrayName(#, #, #, #, #). That's OK for a simple example, but how do I load a paramArray while reading numeric data from an ASCII input file? The number (Ubound) of samples is usually 153 but can vary considerably.
I think I can work out the rest of the MEDIAN calculation from the MSDN example code.
I'm trying to load the contents of text files into a listbox. It loads the file fine but adds an extra character at the end. I have a feeling it has something to do with my Split command but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I generate my xml into "variable string str" by using "dataset.GetXml" and then I write the "xml which is contained in variable str" into "file.xml" by using sFile.WriteLine(str) while 'sFile' is a stream reader"My reason for using 'writeline' instead of 'dataset.WriteXml' because I need to encrypt the 'xml stored in 'str' before I store it into file.xml.I got everything fine for the encrypted result, and so does the decrypted result as well.Here's the decrypted result of my file.xml below (I have checked it the xml value which in str before encryption and which in decrypted file.xml. I am trying to load an Excel 97 single tabbed spreadsheet into a SQL server table using the OleDbDataAdapter function. From all the documentation I have found, the first parameter should be "select * from [sheet1$]". This works fine for me only if the tab in the worksheet is named Sheet1. If I change what's in the [] brackets to the actual tab name, it also works fine.

I have a window application develpoed in vs 2008, framework 3.5, in which i have put a button.. Now where i click that button the other text boxes are filled up with the data from database thru web service.. what i want is while all text boxes are being filled i want to show an animated loading gif image till data loading is completed in all the text boxes.. i have tried to use image picture box but while data is loading gif image is displyes but in static mode.. cant see animation... i think this is because data loading and animation both are done thru one UI thread..

I deliberately deleted some code from the xml file to replicate a corrupt file but cannot catch the exception before the program trips up. I want to be able to notify the user there is a corrupt file and get them to re-install it.I have tried trying and catching but the debugger always stops with an XmlSchemaException at - m_TempTable.ReadXml(Path,XmlReadMode.ReadSchema)
The xml file is static information that needs no changing or saving. Would another way of storing this info be better?

I am facing a "weird" problem with the DataGridView. In fact, I have a function, that loads each table of an xml file into a datagridview (27 tables all with same structure except one called Listes). In the datagridview I have a combobox column to select "type" (it's the 3rd Column, so it's index is 2 normally). The problem is that when I call the function loaddata for the first time, all work perfectly ! If I call it for a second time, to reload the data, I get an error of cast! I verified and it seems that first time I call the function the column that contains the combobox is column(2), but when I run it again automatically the indexes of the columns are changing and am getting the error, because the column that contains the combobox is becoming column (3) and that explains the cast error because the column'(2) is not anymore the combobox so the cast will fail ! What I can't understand is why it's reordering that way my columns automatically ?
