Localizing Multi-lined String As One Constant In Resource File
Jan 4, 2010
I have a multi-lined string message that needs to be added to the Resources.resx file of the project. Currently I'm achieving this some thing like this MessageBox(My.Resources.MyMsg1 & vbNewLine & My.Resources.MyMsg2 ). This works.However I'd like to have the entire message in one resource string rather than adding two resources strings to the Resources.resx file.I've tried using' but no luck..message displays as "My message.Rest of the message".I've also tried manually adding a new line in the Resources.resx file. ( by doing "My message.<Shift+Enter>Rest of the message" But message is adding an additional space before the message in the second line.

I need to refer to some strings using an "indirect string" in the registry. It should be in this form:
@filename,resource
MSDN: "If the resource value is zero or greater, the number becomes the index of the string in the binary file. If the number is negative, it becomes a resource ID."How can I find out either of these numbers for my resources that only have names in VB? I also need the ID/index for the exe's icon.

I have a question about creating a multi-language application and the use of resource files. I will explain what I have done and what I would like the final product to be like.I am doing this in VB.Net and using Visual Studio 2008 After creating a new project, I added a resource file to the project (Add -> New Item, Selected Resource File, named it Resource1.resx).
I then double clicked the resource file and was able to add some names and values. For example,
Name - lblFirstName, value - John
Name - lblLastName, value - Smith
On my form, I have 2 labels: FirstName, and LastName
In Code, I added
FirstName.Text = My.Resources.Resource1.lblFirstName
LastName.Text = My.Resources.Resource1.lblLastName
If I run this code, it works fine. John and Smith are displayed on the labels. Now for my question. Say instead of first and last name the labels (buttons, menu items, etc.) were actually words that would be different in different languages. What I would like is to have something like
EnglishText.resx
SpanishText.resx
GermanText.resx
Each resource file would contain the same names, just different values. Depending on what language was selected, decided by the user (from a menu), how can I get the matching resource file to be used.
Basically what I want would be FirstName.Text = My.Resources.<Language Specific Resource File>.lblFirstName
Is something like this possible? Is this an acceptable approach? Is there a better way of doing this? I try to check often to see if there are follow up questions or if more information needs to be provided.

The code below works so i know the resource is registering correctly ...
vb.net
My.Computer.Audio.Play(My.Resources.alrt2xuk, AudioPlayMode.Background)
But what im trying to do is make a function where I can play the audio file in the programs resources with a string variable being passed to it representing the resource objects filename.
this is so users can type in a audio files name and pull it from the program's resources dynamically VS a big case i would keep having to expand ...
heres my code
[Code]....
but that isnt working for some reason ... keeps throwing "objects reference not set to instant of an object" on the "Return ..." line

I have strMyColor = "Red".I would like to make lblMyLabel.BackColor to be red.Without using a variable the code would be this:
lblMyLabel.BackColor=Color.Red
I tried using the variable like this: lblMyLabel.backcolor="Color." & strMyColor
But the error is that a string can't be converted to System.Draw.Color. I understand that, as the string "Color.Red" is not the same as the VB constant Color.Red.Is there a way I can construct a valid vbConstant from a string?

When building a class library which contains many classes, all classes uses a lot of common constants and functions, what is the best to do:
1- Declare these constants and functions as public in a module.
2- In each class declare constants and functions used by individual class as private.
The first choice is good for easy and fast implementation, but re-using a class in a different project will require importing the module to the other project.The second choice require a lot of copy/paste for code snippet but a class can be re-used in different project easily.

The selected path is assigned to a public variable which is used with concatenation to crate folder for saving user input data. How can I change the path string to a constant so the user can run the program again without having to run setup routine unless they want to change the save location?

suppose I have variables named A1, A2, A3 ... B1, B2, B3 ... Z97, Z98, Z99. I have a certain operation I want to do using each one in turn. I CAN write a line of code for every single variable, but this will get pretty tedious. I'd prefer it if I can make a function that takes the letter and the number as arguments. So, if it gets the arguments "E" and "10" it will perform the operation on variable E10. What is the syntax for this? say a simple operation such as: result = E10 * 3 Is the syntax any different if I use constants instead of variables?

I have a resource file that I include in my shared code library that has all of my re-usable classes in it (all the resources go into their own namespace). Now, what is the best practice regarding resources... should I include them in the same DLL, or should I have a seperate resource DLL and/or are there any benefits from seperating them out into their own file.

When developing ASP.NET websites (using VB.NET web forms) - a lot of my time is spend writing CSS files and they always seem to get messy (code duplication) and very long.
All I want to achieve is to be able to manipulate the CSS using VB.NET code in the following ways:
Use an integer variable to store my "golden" number 7 and use that for width, padding, margin etc where needed
Use string variables to store my "golden" hex color codes e.g. "#44C5F2" and use them for color, background-color, border-color etc. where needed Use an integer variable to set the height of an element and have four child elements each with height: mynum / 4
I just want to use basic VB.net number and string manipulation in order to create a CSS file on the fly.
I understand that the end product - the CSS file shouldn't change much - it should at most change on a daily basis otherwise caching couldn't be used.[code]...

I noticed that if I leave off the terminating double quote for a string constant in Visual Studio 2010, there is no error or even a warning, i.e.
Dim foo as String = "hi
However, the continuous integration tool we are using flags an error:
error BC30648: String constants must end with a double quote.
Is there some language rule in VB.Net that makes a terminating double quote optional "sometimes"? Is there some setting in Visual Studio that will make it flag this as an error, so I can avoid "breaking the build" in this way?

The company has a Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate project that is written in Visual Basic. The project has several strings in the resources file (Resources.resx). One of those strings (VersionSuffix) contains "" when we are distributing a normal version of our product and "BETA" when we are distributing a beta version of our product. Most of the time we distribute a normal version of our product. Therefore, most of the time the resource string VersionSuffix contains "".
Recently, we attempted to distribute a beta version of our product. Therefore, we changed resource string VersionSuffix from "" to "BETA". However, it quickly became apparent that the resource string VersionSuffix was being used as the default value for several control properties in the form designer. For example, if I draw a rich textbox on a form then file FORMNAME.Designer.vb will contain the following.
Me.RichTextBox1.Location = New System.Drawing.Point(286, 306)
Me.RichTextBox1.Name = "RichTextBox1"
Me.RichTextBox1.Size = New System.Drawing.Size(134, 33)
Me.RichTextBox1.TabIndex = 32
Me.RichTextBox1.Text = Global.PROJECTNAME.My.Resources.Resources.VersionSuffix
We are unable to find anything anywhere that indicates that this resource string should be used as the default value for control properties. Therefore, we have no idea why this resource string is being used for this purpose. We would like to change the control property assignments in the designer from Me.RichTextBox1.Text = Global.PROJECTNAME.My.Resources.Resources.VersionSuffix
Me.RichTextBox1.Text = "" However, we don't know why these strange assignments are being made. Therefore, as soon as someone adds another control the problem will most likely return. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to prevent it from happening again?

I am wondering on the complexity and advisability of translating hard-coded string values in my VB apps. I have used the GNU gettext library for C apps, but going through creating a custom wrapper to interop for my VB libraries seems redundant. I know that there is the option (which I have used) of doing satellite assemblies for localizing the form, but for the strings that I have coded this does not seem to work. how to use the power of .NET to extra the strings from my code, put them in a string table and have separate string tables be called based on culture selected?

I'm working on a project that involves localizing a large number of Windows Forms. We're dealing with layout using the TableLayoutPanel control, which works nicely. One area we're striking problems with is when we set the Form.Localizable property to True, we then end up having to manage one .resx file per form per language.
That would be fine if the .resx files only contained the Localized text, but it also contains a vast amount of layout data for the form. Is there a way to separate the localizable text elements from the control layout information, that continues to work in the visual studio IDE? I've noticed that I can modify my the form's designer file to look at another resource file, but when I use the form designer, these changes are deleted:
'Label1
Me.Label1.AutoSize = True
Me.Label1.Dock = System.Windows.Forms.DockStyle.Top
Me.Label1.Location = New System.Drawing.Point(3, 0)
Me.Label1.Name = "Label1"
Me.Label1.Size = New System.Drawing.Size(61, 13)
Me.Label1.TabIndex = 1
Me.Label1.Text = My.Resources.ResourceManager.GetString("Form1_Label1_Text")

Whats the most efficient way to read in moderately large data tables of constants? Im talking about maybe a few hundred items in a vector, or some 6 x 6 or 8 x 10 tables of numbers or strings, that kind of thing. (Im aware that they arent really stored in two dimensions.)In the old pre-Windows versions of Basic, wed use READ and DATA statements.In VB, we can read from an external file. I dont like to do this because something might happen to the file.
The resource file is another option. The setup is tricky, but once you get it its simple to maintain. It does involve reading strings and splitting them up to get numbers, which should be slow.Then theres the brute force method, where you just fill in the array in the source, you know,x() = {303, 279, 274, 268,} and so on for many continued lines. Some work to get everything in the right place, but one time only. I suppose that this makes the executable bigger.

I am very new to coding, though I can understand some of the rreeaallllyy basic stuff. However, I am currently developing a basic webbrowser and I'm stuck =. How do I take text, i.e. a TextBox's text, and save it as a string resource, but I do not want it to have that text as a name, as it can change. I want to store the URL as a string called "Home" but still have it's properties as the URL. I would also like to be able to recall it for when the program loads.
