Loop Computation Time Increases Dramatically With Small Change

Apr 3, 2012

I recently made a change to the code within a loop in my code, and now when I run the code through Visual Studio 2010 Express, the loop runs about 10x slower than the previous loop.I did not make any significant changes (to my knowledge) to the code within the loop.I made the change so that the loop could handle various conditions I imposed in another section of the code.I know that it is this loop that is slowing everything down because I report the loop progress on my form.[code]I feel like my changed code should run better, but it doesn't.I know that my code is not written very efficiently (and feel free to comment on ways to improve it), but my main concern is the significant increase in computation time that resulted from my changes. The loop above is the main block of code within the Sub, which is run via a thread. In my tests, it is the only thread running at that time.Everything works, and the computation yields the correct result, but takes 10x longer than previously. Additionally, the number of iterations does not increase. So the new code isn't iterating excessively, it is simply taking much longer to compute within each iteration.

Target CPU Affecting Execution Time Dramatically?

Aug 13, 2010

Recently, I've been running some tests with C++ and VB.NET to compare execution speeds. In the last thread I posted, I talked about how I had encountered the fact that C++ was executing just as fast as VB, but got that issue resolved. Now I'm hitting my head against another wall:I had made a DLL for VB.NET to test out this theory and compare in just one program side by side execution time of identical VB.NET and C++ code. But the interesting thing? VB.NET's execution time improved such that it was now exactly identical to the execution time of C++. Spending some time with the problem, I discovered that the "Target CPU" option in advanced compile options in Visual Studio 2008 was the culprit!

Since I'm running 64-bit Windows 7, I figured making the target CPU x64 would yield the best execution time. Wrong. Here are the results in execution time of a Windows Forms application for VB.NET,calculating all the prime numbers up to 10,000,000 and getting their sum.

Any CPU: 15.231 seconds
x86: 10.858 seconds
x64: 15.236 seconds

Below is the code I'm using, feel free to test it yourself:Public Class Form1

But it only gave me 12:00 AM.

DateDiff(DateInterval.Year, DateTimePicker1, Now.Date)

Computation Of Tax For Payroll System

Oct 6, 2011

I am working on program in vb2008 and facing problem in making a PAYROLL SYSTEM.. well, I've done some of its parts and functions but the main part of it is still unsolved -- the computation of tax!! our boss want that when you input a basic monthly salary, the semisalary will be computed.. minus the sss, pag-ibig and philhealth.. then the tax will be computed but also depending on the number of dependents the employee have...

Code:
Private Sub semiSalary_click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles semiSalary.Click
If basicSalary.Text = "" Then
MsgBox("Please enter a salary.", MsgBoxStyle.Exclamation, "Invalid")
Else
Dim result2 As Double
[Code] .....

What I've done is that I'm trying to display those values when the the textbox corresponding to it was clicked. We get each value in our database stored on textboxes from the formtables of sss & philhealth.

What Is Best Way To Handle DPI Increases

Feb 22, 2012

I have a form based application that works without issue at 100% (Windows 7), but one increases it to 125%, everything goes awry. Now, I know to set the form AutoScaleMode to DPI, which alleviates some of the issues, but some controls are cut off because of the form size.I know I can set 'AutoSize = True' on the form as well, but this gives unintended results and doesn't allow the user to resize the form as needed. What is the best way to handle DPI increases? Should I get the user's DPI and manually draw all the controls based on their DPI setting?

Formatting Excel - If I Try Using Style.numberformat With The Date And Time Formats, They Don't Change And Are Entered As If Didn't Change The Format?

Mar 11, 2011

I am throwing some data out into Excel and am having some formatting troubles. I have 5 columns (date, time, a long number I don't want displayed in scientific notation - text is fine, text, text). I can get it all working with numberformat, however I have to do them different ways.

Date works this way cell.numberformat = "m/d/yy" and it formats it to say 3/1/11

Time works this way cell.numberformat = "h:mm AM/PM" and it formats it to say 8:07 AM

For the long number cell.numberformat = "@" and it doesn't change the format and it gets displayed in scientific notation

BUT if I use cell.style.numberformat = "@" it works as it should, but it messes up all of the date and time cells. Apparently when you use style.numberformat, it doesn't just apply to the cell you're working with. If I try using style.numberformat with the date and time formats, they don't change and are entered as if I didn't change the format at all.

VS 2010 Book Penalty Computation?

Mar 23, 2012

I have a 2 DateTimePicker on my design.1 DateTimePicker for Due Date and another 1 DateTimePicker for Date Returned. Now I would like to automatically compute for penalty which is 24 per day just clicking on the Date Returned's DateTimePicker. For example,A student borrowed a book today and the librarian assigned the due date when to return it.

Take note, the date today is 03/23/2012.and the librarian assigned a due date into 03/25/2012 (the exact date when the student should return it). When the student attempts to return the book at 03/28/2012, and the librarian clicks on the Date Returned's DateTimePicker, the penalty will show as 72 and so on and so for.So I am asking on the codes or tips on how should i do it to make this things work?

C# - Adding Two .NET SqlDecimals Increases Precision?

Jun 23, 2011

in .NET, when I add two SqlDecimals, like so:

[Code]...

then s3 has precision 2, whereas both s1 and s2 have precision 1. This seems odd, especially as the documentation states that the return value of the addition operator is "A new SqlDecimal structure whose Value property contains the sum." I.e. according to the documentation, addition should not change the precision.

How To Create Invoice Number That Increases

Sep 13, 2010

I have a simple question that most could probably answer. I have a button that when it is clicked it transfers information from that form to a microsoft word doc. Now what I want to do is everytime that button is clicked it creates a number that is displayed on the word doc. So this is how it would go:

first click- it would show a number 1 on the invoice.

second click- it would show a number 2 on the invoice.

This would continue as long as the program is used.

VS 2010 Signed And Unsigned Integer NOT: For Hex File Checksum Computation?

Feb 22, 2012

I have been trying to compute the checksum for a line of hex code. This is to create a hex file which will be loaded onto an embedded micro. Some of you guys may not know how this is done so very briefly:

a line of hex bytes:

: 10 01 00 00 21 46 01 36 01 21 47 01 36 00 7E FE 09 D2 19 01 40

The underlined bytes are taken and summed. (in this case the decimal 960). and the bold is the checksum Only the 8LSB (or single least significant byte) is needed to compute the checksum... which in this case, 960 = 03C0 in hex, so only C0 is needed. Two's complement is then taken:

step 1) logical not of C0 which is
step 2) add one (integer)
BIN...........DEC...HEX

[code]....

So here is the code I have been using: (quick mention that in the string passed, the hex bytes are all grouped together, there are no space characters)

Public Sub CreateLine(ByVal Data As String)
'Dim BDataArray(DataLength) As Byte
Dim IDataArray(Data.Length) As Integer

[code]....

where i get into trouble is where i commented 'i get into trouble'. My code works, but it's rather crude Now, in that line i first convert the hex value (string) "SChecksum" into an integer. I want to NOT this, so I get my step 2 from my explanation. However, the results appears to be a signed logical NOT. which gives me the wrong answer. My hashed togther version simply subtracts 256 before the not, in order to give me the correct answer.

Basically, I would love for someone to chime in and point out the flaws in my function, and push me towards figuring out the 'proper' way of doing this. Also I can't quite wrap my head around what would happen in the case a string were passed to my function that is over 16 bits, but I imagine I would have to subtract a larger value than 256, before doing the NOT in this case?(whilst we're on the subject of functions, I've used a 'sub', in which case should I used a sub, and which case should I use a function?).

VS 2010 - Program Memory Leak, Ram Gradually Increases

Nov 25, 2010

I'm trying to fix a problem that is just killing my program's efficiency. When I run it, it starts out at maybe 10M of RAM, but it gradually increases. Within 20 minutes, it can get up to 700M of RAM. Now, when the program is restarted, all of this goes away and starts anew, but restarting the program every so often is a very loose solution. Here's what my program does: there's an array in which many (anywhere from 500-4000 or so) links are placed. I have a webbrowser that navigates to each of these and does an action on them, then moves to the next page. For example: [Code]

And all of the actions work perfectly, but the memory exponentially increases, resulting in a crash if left on for too long. I've searched Google and all I've found is that that's not the actual usage, and that if you just minimize it and maximize it again it will go down, but it did not when I tried it. Why is the memory increasing so much like that, and is there any way to fix it?

Loop Through The Applications That Run At A Time?

May 28, 2009

Is there any way to loop through the applications that run at a time (the application list from task manager) and get the application's caption?

At a moment I have two instances of "acad.exe" but they will have different application name and I have to choose one of them, but I don't want to close the other one.

If I use the process list I get only the "acad.exe" name and I cannot differentiate between them.
