there is a database, containing a table with personnel. in the personnel table there are names and ID'sthere is a second table departemens, containing the names of departements and their ID's.in the third table it says which departement ID and which personnel ID are to be linked,

Is there an easy way to do this?
I have created a strongly typed dataset in the VS 2005 Dataset Designer. There are two tables that relates to each other in a one to many relationship: Claim and ClaimDetail. The designer automatically creates a function GetClaimDetailRows which returns all ClaimDetailRows for a ClaimRow. Why is this Array's length always 0? Because ClaimDetail contains more than 40 Million rows, i did'nt fill it before i call GetClaimDetailRows but had configured it's selectcommand that it takes a parameter idData to fill only the related records. But that seems not to work because the ClaimDetail-Datatable is empty.
The automatically generated function in the ClaimRow-Class which returns all related ClaimDetailRows:

When debugging I see that it jumps into the else block but returns 0 rows. Do I have to fill the Claimdetail-Datatable first(ClearBeforeFill=True) for each Claim? But then I don't need to use this function anymore. I now fill the Datatable(ClearBeforeFill=True)before i call the Child-function and it works. But I don't understand why it could not throw an exception(optionally) when I try to acess a child-relation without having that datatable being filled(at least with 0 rows). Instead of that it returns 0 rows what can be correct or incorrect and is difficult to detect.
I have been using access for my applications from over 4 years now. I realize its time to move on now and i need suggestions for a new database. Here are my requirements :should be able to connect it with Vb.net windows form frontend GUI - all database functions such as add/delete/edit/update will be done through the vb.net front-end only.Should be able to place the db on LAN and each client on the LAN can then access the centrally stored db through their individual front-ends.At the most 5-6 users will be reading/writing to the database at the same time , so the database should not crash or slow down Since i come from MS access background, i would like something thats similar to it so that i can learn and adapt to it quickly.Not very important, but i think its worth mentioning. This db will be the main central db for my .net application.My .net application will also be interacting with quickbooks and magento via some apis but ultimately all this data will go to the central db. So just curious, will there be any compataibility issues with the database that you suggest Should handle about 10 tables and around 10k records in each table Should be secure - just that i should be able to lock it up or anyhow prevent it being accessed from anywhere else other than the vb.net front-end.
Lastly, I would prefer it to be free to use if possible but not essential. I realize there are some topics like mysql vs sqllite and on databases, but pls understand i need suggestions for one that will be apt for the purposes i have listed above.
Edit : Just curious - Would i pushing the limits if i still stick to access - i understand access won't be good for multi-user access but i guess 5 users is not much ?

I need to Update Access Database Table with Data from a Different Table. Not all the rows of original Table to be Updated will be affected. How do you loop through the 2 Tables to do the required Update.
The Table to be updated is called "RecordList" and Table with new Data is called "RecListReport".Every attempt I've made won't work. I tried to Use 2 Datagridviews but couldn't get it to work right.

I know how to open a database but I don't know how to open a SQL one. Also when I used VB5 I used to "Set" the database to open. When I type "Set" it comes up in the blue letters and then disappears. The problem I have is that the tables I need to read do not have the read permission; the access permission is set to "Share Deny Write"; though I can open the database in MS Access and export the table to another mdb where I can read it. Is there any way to automate this, or to set read permission on the database using VB.net? Is there any other way to get the info from table not having the read permission?

I have an Inventory table that contains a lot of Trash Containers (Construction Dumpsters).
All of these containers have a field in the table for their "Size". View 11 RepliesI am using OledDb to create/retrieve/delete data from Access databases. At one point in the solution, I the user adds data to a new table and the table name is defined by the user. The obvious problem with this is that the user could add spaces, characters, and Access/SQL keywords that are not allowed in the table name. Later in the solution, the user should be able to identify their saved table and retrieve it. I have considered the brute force method of formatting the input to remove offending characters and then reformat for the user's view, but that seems like something I would like to avoid. I have also considered placing restrictions on the textbox with masks, key event restrictions, and checks for conflicts with keywords, but I would also like to avoid that. So, my question is, does anyone have a creative solution for identifying a table name with something like 'my name is table number *1'?

I am making a application that has the ability to edit values on a access database table. As a simple example, My table looks something like this:
Order Number Completed
2000 No
2001 No
2002 No
The application needs to edit the Completed columns. I have 1 text box, and 1 button in my form. You enter the Oder Number in the textbox and press the button. The VB application then needs to change the Completed to Yes in the database. Example, I type in 2002 in the textbox and press a button. The application changes Completed to Yes for this order number in the access database and saves/updates the database.
