Any Advantage To Prefixing Enum Values?

Mar 24, 2011

In this post Jon Skeet pointed out that the following code should be changed to conform with the .NET naming conventions. Doing that would also decrease the amount of noise in the code.

[Code]...

I must admit, I was pretty much like a sheep and was following what others have done before me. I thought the prefix did not look right and then to have it twice did not make sense either. After looking at a couple of .NET Framework examples, it looks like this would be closer to the standard.

C# - Get Values From An Enum Into A Generic List?

Nov 21, 2011

I don't know how to convert the following line from VB to C#:

Dim values As New List(Of T)(System.Enum.GetValues(GetType(T)))

My version doesn't work:

List<T> values = new List<T>(System.Enum.GetValues(typeof(T)));

The best overloaded method match for 'System.Collections.Generic.List.List(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable)'
has some invalid arguments

The constructor-parameter doesn't take it that way - what cast (or else) am I missing?

For clarification: It is wrapped up within the following generic method

public static void BindToEnum<T>()
{
List<T> values = new List<T>(System.Enum.GetValues(typeof(T)));
//...
}

How To Get Enum Values To AutoComplete Without Typing

Sep 19, 2010

In VS2008, you could write, for instance,
dim enumValue as MyEnum
enumValue =
And then as soon as you typed the =, you'd get a list of possible values of MyEnum. With VS2010, you have to type
dim enumValue as MyEnum
enumValue = MyEnum.
Before getting the list on typing the final. This makes for a lot more typing and seems to be a retrograde step ... is there an option I'm missing? (I have 'Auto List members checked in the Text Editor options under 'Basic').

How To Format By Padding Left And Right - So The Columns Can Be Neat And Aligned

Here is my code:

How do I pad it correctly so the columns can be neat and aligned.

MS Excel - Appealing, Structured And Neat Appearance For Ease Of Usage By People With Limited IT Abilities?

Mar 2, 2010

I'm currently working on my (business) master's thesis... the topic is capital budgeting tools to manage major investments for a European energy supplier.So far the company has used MS Excel for calculating relevant data to make decisions on whether to invest money in new projects or abandon them. There usually is a host of input data, lots of basic calculations and just two or three outputs (such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment etc) .It is my task to develop a new excel template or decide on buying a completely new software license, if excel proves unable to provide the functionality the company needs.

So far I have only very limited programming knowledge, stretching to Java basics, some HTML code and SQL Databases.However, a colleague hinted at the fact that the VB.net programming language can be easily learned and used to improve excel considerably. Ideally I would need excel to be able to:

- make sure people putting data into our template don't mess with it

- be able to communicate with a database

- have an appealing, structured and neat appearance for ease of usage by people with limited IT abilities

- provide all output, including sensitivity analysis charts, in a structured, printable overview

Nullable Enum Verse Enum.None?

May 26, 2010

Which is better, using a nullable enum or adding the value None=0 to your enum list?Using nullables requires more code, but I kind of like it since it forces me to think about the possibility. Otherwise I'm liable to forget about the None enum and fail to account for it being a special case.

BackgroundWorker Get Values From UI Thread While It Is Running?

Jan 2, 2012

I am using the BackgroundWorker to do the heavy tasks so the UI thread doesn't get blocked. While the BackgroundWorker can send values to the UI thread using the progress-scheme, how can the BackgroundWorker get some values FROM the UI thread?

Either by asking it or simply by the UI thread sending some values to the BackgroundWorker?

Just accessing a variable of the UI thread like UIForm.x within the BackgroundWorker does not work, it does not seem to have access to the UI variables?

Decreasing Value In C# Or .NET Enum?

Apr 23, 2012

More for interest than actual need.is it possible to have an automatically decreasing enum in C# or VB.NET?

public enum testEnum
{
this = -1,
that,
other,
}

So that that = -2 and other = -3.I'm pretty sure the only way to do it is to specifically assign "that" and "other", but I wondered if there was an automatic way of doing it.

Edit To be clear, I'm simply talking about the automatic assignment of the value, not the actual value of the enum decreasing.

ENUM As Use It In Other Forms?

Enum MyStatus
Good = 1
Bad = 2
Normal = 3
End Enum

Now from other form I'm using it like frmMainmenu.MyStatus.red. I was wondering how i can make it public or create it in a way so that i don't need to give the prefix frmmainmenu before using its value.

Get Enum Given Its Name (convert From C#)?

Oct 14, 2009

How do I do this C# statement in VB.Net (2005):MainMap.MapType =(MapType)comboBoxMapType.SelectedValue;MainMap only accepts Types so passing the Integer value of the type is not possible. The combo contains a list of strings:comboBoxMapType.DataSource = Enum.GetValues(typeof(MapType));In my case I need to limit the list to less than 100% of the Enum values so code similar to .Datasource= code will not work.So in general I need a way to return an enum given the name of the enum.Maybe I should just do a Collection of Enums (if that is even possible) and use the name as the Key?

Why Does Enum Need To Use A CType

This works but it adds a lot of noise to the code and it seems like the Enum is already defined as an Integer, making me think, why do I have to assign it again?
