I am trying to develop an application to monitor and keep track of all the prints in the office.I have gone through some of the tutorial and found out system.printing has the functions to do so. But when I tried to import it, it says name space or type specified for system.import doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found.

I can't import the System.DirectoryServices namespace. It doesn't pop up if that little box thing.Why?

View 3 RepliesRecently one of my clients started experiencing a very unusual problem. When they try to print from the program I developed their whole system crashes without any error messages or warnings. This problem started recently (they have been using this software for over 2 years).
I used VB.NET 2003 (.NET Framework 1.1) to develop the software, my clients have Windows XP Pro. At first I thought that the problem was in their printer driver. I contacted their IT department and after several weeks of testing they conlcluded that the problem is somehow related to my software (this issue never happened when the client is printing from any other program). To print, I have created a group of classes that create and print reports. The main class subclasses PrintDocument then I use PrintPreviewDialog to display the preview and give the client the option to setup page settings, etc. The code runs without problem on my development machines and up until recently without problem on the client system as well. I did intall an upgrade recently that was related to printing, but all I did was to modify the print output, the upgrade did not modified any of the printing functions.
I tried to find information on the Internet, but coudln't find anything. I wonder if migrating the solution to .NET Framework 2.0 will solve this problem?

View 3 RepliesWe had a wierd problem at work.SOmeone at finance tried to import a text file into their system. It complained about the textfile was in unicode format. The file contains scandinavian . Apparently the ERP system that exported the file can only handle unicode.So one of our junior programmers wrote a batch program that line by line converted the unicode file to ascii (you can't choose encoding.ANSI because ANSI is byte array)
The files are rather big, about 3 GB in size.Apparently the system liked ASCII files, but sadly after this processing the and was gone and replaced with ?So, he wrote a new batch program, this time replacing m?nad with m�nad using String.Replace The file was opened using Encoding.Default and saved using Encoding.Ascii.Now the files HAVE AND can be imported. After he explained this to me, I just went . I wish I had some nifty "you should have done this... bla bla its much easier" but I am lost here in the jungle of code pages and encodings. Can someone that has their head screwed on straight enlight us *both* about why we had this problem and how it could be handled without writing the second batch program?
Basically unicode->non unicode (ascii) with the intact. I also noticed that if I use streamreader to read an ansi file with the internal strings will show ? instead.

I have sent print but it never goes inside the loop. There is nothing shows in the Textbox as well. For Each job As PrintSystemJobInfo In jobs. Is there any way to find out which system it is coming from because I have to build a system with the number of prints each user in the system prints and to which printer.
I have this particular problem with this Property found in System.Printing namespace. I am trying to get the number of pages of a document but it always returns 0. I have posted this problem here some some days back back it seems there is no answer for this problem but rather people direct me to use PrintQueueWatch which is an open source namespace to monitor print document.

I got correctly the others printer's properties,but not those ones.In some cases, the return value from the property is correct, but sometimes is not true, and it doesnt' depends on the brand.Is there a different method to get the informtion more accurately?

I have the following piece of code that contains my message body in an email I'm trying to send via vb.net (through outlook) The code works, but .net is not recognizing the HTML formatting and is giving the error: "XML literals and XML axis properties are not available Please Add references to the System.Xml.dll, System.Xml.Linq.dll, and System.Core.dll assemblies". I try and do this by going to Project --> add referance, but they are not highlighted and I can't select them. Is there any way around this?

the asterisk-ed line returns an error (obviously) as strId is not of data type String.I also tried using LIKE but again since strId and strPass are not Strings, all I get is an error.
how can I import the System.ServiceProcess namespace into a WPF project in VB.net (not C#)? The ServiceController object is not in the toolbox in VS2008 and can't see to figure it out. Any ideas? If that particular namespace cannot be imported into WPF projects, could somebody suggest another way of controlling windows services from a WPF application? I know this framework is focused more on multimedia apps, but would really like to switch over some of my tools to WPF.
View 2 RepliesI need to take a bill of material file from a customer in xml format and import it into our system. The problem I'm running into is that the terms they use to describe the types of material may vary. So, for example, if they are specifying a piece of threaded rod, they may call it "THREADED ROD", "THREADEDROD", "THRD ROD", "THRD'D ROD" or some other variation. Another example might be rectangular tubing. They might call it "RECTANGULAR TUBING", "RECT TUBING", "RECT TUBE", etc. There will be many types of material besides these two that I need to catch. Once the program determines what the material is it then branches to the appropriate subroutine to do further parsing. I was trying to think of a way to use regex or the "Like" or "Contains" operators to do this. Here is one way I thought of using "Select ... Case" but it isn't very flexible & will only catch hard-coded terms:

In Visual Studio 10 - Visual Basic, why can't I import "System.Drawing" when my only reference is "System"? I can import "System.Runtime.InteropServices".To reproduce my problem:
1. Create a New Project in Visual Studio 10 with Visual Basic Class Library template.
2. Add "Imports System.Drawing" and "Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices" at the beginning.
3. Remove all references except "System" in the References pane of the project properties.
Result:Visual Studio cannot find "System.Drawing" but it can find "System.Runtime.InteropServices". "System.Drawing" is fully qualified so the system should be able to find it inside the referenced "System".
Thoughts:It appears "System" and "System.Drawing" are distinct namespaces (or containers?) so why doesn't qualification "." work? Does "." represent something else? "System" is also in "mscorlib" but is that the namespace which is used or is it another?"Microsoft.VisualBasic" is also listed in the imported namespaces but there is not a reference to it. How was it found? Where is the "Imported namespaces" list populated from?I have been looking through it for a while but cannot understand why "System.Drawing" is not imported.
Is there a way to "Import" a static class in C# such as System.Math? I have included a comparison.[code]...
View 3 RepliesI am working on an applictation to scan windows files to check for missing files, i have a couple questions on how to do this.I would like to use the %systemroot%system32 that way that it doesn't matter what drive letter it is, i'm not sure how to do this because when i tried it, it told me the file i was looking for didn't exist (in this case C:windowssystem32 undll32.exe) which does exist. Is there some way to use the %systemroot%?
Also, i am trying to print the resaults to a rich text box such as if rundll32.exe is missing put in the box "rundll32.exe is missing". How do I allow it to write it in the box, I tried the print command, but it didn't work.

Also i am using Crystal Reports for Report solution. my question is How do i created reports such a way that they can be printed in faster Ascii Format on any DotMatrix printer. The default true type fonts make printing very slower.
I tried to use "Draft 10 cpi" font which come to available me after i installed a correct driver for my Epson printer. which also helped me overcome this problem. however it wont be the scenario with all my clients i.e. they might have different printers having different Make with different drivers installed. i have tried to open such project on there PC but the printing wont come in Draft instead the fonts get expanded too much & the print wont come right.
I basically have an application that generates reports in a .html file, I use a .html file for the ease of making tables and formatting text.Now I would like to introduce a way of printing the reports from my program. Because I use a .html file, the formatting would not the correct if I was to print it directly from my application (as far as I know). For this reason, I would like to print it just like my web browser would have in order to keep the tabular data intact and the text formatting.
View 1 RepliesI'm creating an application which has an scheduler to print and it checks if there is a pending job on the print queue before it prints the next file. I use a timer which checks if there is any file to be printed on my database. Example, the timer ticks and selected 10 files to be printed, it should print the 10 files 1 at a time, if there's no print queue, that's the only time the next file should print. I think another timer is required which will keeps on checking if print queue is done. How will i do this?

I'm trying to print a small label but it constantly throws errors. I've never printed in vb 2008.
I have a utility that is a simple exe that is not installed compiled with VS2005 and works well. But when I upgraded to VS2008 the utility can no longer locate files in the active system folder. I have UAC turned off and am logged in as the Administrator and it still can not locate a file that I can see in Windows Explorer. The file I am looking for is PakMgr.exe.
