IDE :: Import System.IO.Packaging Into VB 2008 Program?
Jul 15, 2009
I am attempting to read Excel 2003 cell content through a Visual Basic 2008 program. Searching Help for the subject yielded an example Function named XLGetCellValue (ByVal fileName As String, ByVal sheetName As String, Byval addressName As String) As String
This function required the following Iports:
Imports
System.IO.Packaging
Imports System.Xml
Imports System.IO
upon pasting the above three Iports to the Program, Igot the following error message:Warning 1 Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'System.IO.Packaging' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases.

I am trying to compress and uncompress files. I have read that System.IO.Packaging might suit my needs, but I can not find it. I am using VS 2008 professional. Imports System.IO.Packaging at the top of class does not work (it throws an error). I did find system.io.compression. Does this replace packaging? If it does, does it handle .7z and .rar files?

This is the code I have right now
pZipFilename = "C:\123\1234.zip"
Using pkgMain As Package = Package.Open(pZipFilename, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
For Each pkgPart As PackagePart In pkgMain.GetParts()
...
The problem I'm having is that pkgMain.GetParts() never returns anything even though the .zip file has around 100 items in it.

I'm trying to use system.io.packaging to create my own zip class. I've got it to work, but i'm not happy with the compression rate. In the code below I've set it to the maximum compression rate, yet winrar is able to create a zip (at maximum compression) that is 2/3 of the size when I make it. Am i doing something wrong?

Should I consider packaging with my program the .net framework files?

I'm developing a very simple program in VB2010 Express that will create folders based on entries in a remote database. I am fully aware that the minimum requirement to run the exe is the latest .net framework, however I have a few added resources to the file, and when I try to run the executable on another computer, it fails to run stating that the resources are missing.
How do i compile my VB code AND the resources together into a stand-alone executable that only requires the .net framework to be installed?I have already tried to google this issue, however every answer I find has nothing to do with my initial question..

I am trying to develop an application to monitor and keep track of all the prints in the office.I have gone through some of the tutorial and found out system.printing has the functions to do so. But when I tried to import it, it says name space or type specified for system.import doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found.

Any way to import passwords into all program downloads. For example, if I wish to give a certain user a password I can somehow insert it into a program, and it updates all the programs which have been downloaded. It just saves editing the code, then releasing another update to include new passwords for people to use. Maybe if there's someway to auto update when an update is available, it would work. Here is the coding for a password. I just need to find a way with will mass update everybody's program when I want to add a new password for another person.
Private Sub ButtonX2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Verify.Click
My.Settings.Password = TextBoxX3.Text
My.Settings.Save()
Incorrect.Visible = True

I am trying to launch a program using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("C:Program FilesFrets on FireFretsOnFire.exe") but the program always fails - the program generates an error log - so its obviously trying to start - ive included the log text but i doubt it will be useful.
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "FretsOnFire.py", line 45, in <module>
File "GameEngine.pyo", line 23, in <module>
Yet it runs fine when double clicked? why i can launch it from explorer but not from my code

We had a wierd problem at work.SOmeone at finance tried to import a text file into their system. It complained about the textfile was in unicode format. The file contains scandinavian . Apparently the ERP system that exported the file can only handle unicode.So one of our junior programmers wrote a batch program that line by line converted the unicode file to ascii (you can't choose encoding.ANSI because ANSI is byte array)
The files are rather big, about 3 GB in size.Apparently the system liked ASCII files, but sadly after this processing the and was gone and replaced with ?So, he wrote a new batch program, this time replacing m?nad with mnad using String.Replace The file was opened using Encoding.Default and saved using Encoding.Ascii.Now the files HAVE AND can be imported. After he explained this to me, I just went . I wish I had some nifty "you should have done this... bla bla its much easier" but I am lost here in the jungle of code pages and encodings. Can someone that has their head screwed on straight enlight us *both* about why we had this problem and how it could be handled without writing the second batch program?
Basically unicode->non unicode (ascii) with the intact. I also noticed that if I use streamreader to read an ansi file with the internal strings will show ? instead.

I have the following piece of code that contains my message body in an email I'm trying to send via vb.net (through outlook) The code works, but .net is not recognizing the HTML formatting and is giving the error: "XML literals and XML axis properties are not available Please Add references to the System.Xml.dll, System.Xml.Linq.dll, and System.Core.dll assemblies". I try and do this by going to Project --> add referance, but they are not highlighted and I can't select them. Is there any way around this?

it's a log in form and I need to put case-sensitive validation in other words if your Username = Admin then Admin != admin Consider this code block (VB is really unfamiliar for me so break it to me gently ^^) This is after it has matched a record in the database to the parameter passed to the function LogIn()
If dataTable.Rows.Count > 0 Then
'case-sensitive Validation follows
'data in Column ID and Password are placed in variables
[code]....
the asterisk-ed line returns an error (obviously) as strId is not of data type String.I also tried using LIKE but again since strId and strPass are not Strings, all I get is an error.

how can I import the System.ServiceProcess namespace into a WPF project in VB.net (not C#)? The ServiceController object is not in the toolbox in VS2008 and can't see to figure it out. Any ideas? If that particular namespace cannot be imported into WPF projects, could somebody suggest another way of controlling windows services from a WPF application? I know this framework is focused more on multimedia apps, but would really like to switch over some of my tools to WPF.

I need to take a bill of material file from a customer in xml format and import it into our system. The problem I'm running into is that the terms they use to describe the types of material may vary. So, for example, if they are specifying a piece of threaded rod, they may call it "THREADED ROD", "THREADEDROD", "THRD ROD", "THRD'D ROD" or some other variation. Another example might be rectangular tubing. They might call it "RECTANGULAR TUBING", "RECT TUBING", "RECT TUBE", etc. There will be many types of material besides these two that I need to catch. Once the program determines what the material is it then branches to the appropriate subroutine to do further parsing. I was trying to think of a way to use regex or the "Like" or "Contains" operators to do this. Here is one way I thought of using "Select ... Case" but it isn't very flexible & will only catch hard-coded terms:
Select Case material
Case "THREADED ROD", "THRD ROD" 'etc...
Case "RECTANGULAR TUBE", "RECT TUBE", "RECT TUBING" 'etc...
End Select

I'm typing this up only to document it and possibly save others the three days of frustration and hell I had to go through. Because this unhanded exception was damned near untrappable (it happens on Form.Show(), but since my primary form was affected, I couldn't tell at the time), it's one I know I lost a lot of hair nailing down.
I have an office application. Standard fare utility program that grew to do lots of custom tricks for my place of business. Lots of database providers to pull data from various unconnected sources and crystal reports to make fancy reports from it all.
When I make a change or addition to it, it usually is only needed by one employee, so I only deploy the new version to one computer at a time. Recently, I had to reinstall the program to the whole company. Everything was going fine, until somebody who had a Windows XP machine tried to run it. It was giving a "clr20r3" "System.InvalidOperationException" on program boot. None of my Try-Catch blocks were catching it. Any Windows XP machine I installed it on was failing, and any Vista/Win7 machine had no issues at all.
I spent the next three days trying to catch what was causing it, pulling out references, reinstalling .NET. Searching for references to this error online was futile since System.InvalidOperationException is one of those ultra-generic errors that pop up for hundreds of oddball reasons.
Finally, by happenstance, I found the cause via a single, obscure post on TechArena by a poster with only that post to his name who decided to chime in with his two cents on someone else's System.InvalidOperationException problem.
About a month ago, I replaced the program icon with a new one. I made up a nice Icon, and compiled pre-sized versions of it into a proper .ICO file from 16x16 all the way up to 256x256. I replaced the program icon with it, the links to the shortcuts in the setup program, and the icon on the main form.
THAT was the bug. Because my .ICO file had sizes larger than 64x64, Windows XP couldn't handle it as a form icon! It works fine for the program icon and for the shortcuts, but the form icons MUST be 64x64 or smaller or the program will throw System.InvalidOperationException on Form.Show(). I didn't know this was the issue since this change was over a month old and I hadn't needed to upgrade a Windows XP machine in that time. Windows Vista and 7 can handle large icon files just fine!
Solution, I made a second, WinXP compliant icon just for the main form. Problem solved. My big icon is still used for my program and shortcuts, so they look great scaling to max size in Windows Vista/7 and XP no longer crashes with a cryptic error message.

In Visual Studio 10 - Visual Basic, why can't I import "System.Drawing" when my only reference is "System"? I can import "System.Runtime.InteropServices".To reproduce my problem:
1. Create a New Project in Visual Studio 10 with Visual Basic Class Library template.
2. Add "Imports System.Drawing" and "Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices" at the beginning.
3. Remove all references except "System" in the References pane of the project properties.
Result:Visual Studio cannot find "System.Drawing" but it can find "System.Runtime.InteropServices". "System.Drawing" is fully qualified so the system should be able to find it inside the referenced "System".
Thoughts:It appears "System" and "System.Drawing" are distinct namespaces (or containers?) so why doesn't qualification "." work? Does "." represent something else? "System" is also in "mscorlib" but is that the namespace which is used or is it another?"Microsoft.VisualBasic" is also listed in the imported namespaces but there is not a reference to it. How was it found? Where is the "Imported namespaces" list populated from?I have been looking through it for a while but cannot understand why "System.Drawing" is not imported.

I have prepared an application which uses SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as its database and Reports using Crystal Reports which comes integrated with VB .net 2008.I am able to package and deploy my application alone. To the system where I am going to install doesnot have SQL Server or Crystal report runtime files.I want to include the same in my package so that it gets installed and followed by my application.I have chosen install application from the same location and tried to package it. It doesn't work.Please suggest me steps so that I can have the required softwares packaged with my application so that the user when he installs, it installs at one go.
