Polymorphism Constructors Default And Properties Similar Class To Listbox

Feb 16, 2012

I'm trying to create a class for storing data on People with another class to store their Bank Transactions.Ideally, this all be hidden away and leave only simple statments, declarations and functions available to the programmer.[code]I know this is possible as these exist in the Listbox Class though can't figure out how it's done.

Listbox, Objects, Inheritance And Polymorphism

Jan 31, 2012

I wasn't quite sure how to label this but that should cover it all. I am using Linq to Sql classes to query a SQL Server table. That part is working fine. I'd like to add the records to a listbox and not just text. I can do this and it works. To get it to display something meaningful in the listbox, I have to override the ToString() function.

So, I've taken the base class tblVendor and created a new sub class tblVendorListObject that inherits tblVendor and overrides ToString to return Me.vendorName. I then use a foreach loop to iterate through the records returned by the query. Next, I create a new instance of tblVendorListObject and attempt to assign the current item in the foreach loop to it.

Protected Constructors And MustInherit / Abstract Class

Jul 5, 2009

What is the difference between a class with protected constructors and a class marked as MustInherit? (I'm programming in VB.Net but it probably equally applies to c#). The reason I ask is because I have an abstract class that I want to convert the constructors to shared/static methods. (To add some constraints). I can't do this because it's not possible to create an instance in the shared function.

.net - Visual Basic 2010: Iteration Through Properties With Similar Name?

Dec 18, 2011

I have created a simple application where I fetch questions from an Access database and store the answers to another Access database. I am not sure how many questions client would like to ask, so I can't hardcode that number.

So, column names for answers table (besides user information like first, last name and so on) will be a1, a2, a3 ... aN.

And finally the problem!

For testing purposes I have hardcoded saving first 3 answers like this:

newEntry.a1 = answers(0)
newEntry.a2 = answers(1)
newEntry.a3 = answers(2)

Now I would like to iterate through all properties based on count of "a-type" properties:

'aCount is number of "a-type" properties
For i = 0 To aCount - 1
Dim property As String
property = "a" & (i + 1)
newEntry.property = answers(i)
Next

Of course, above code does not work, it is just a pseudo-code idea that "should" to the same as my hardcoded example.

Is it possible to iterate through predefined properties of newEntry object in that manner?

Can't Inherit Shared Properties From A Base Class In A Child Class?

Dec 29, 2010

This is another one of my "I think it's not possible but I need confirmation" questions.I have a base class for a bunch of child classes. Right now, this base class has a few common properties the children use, like Name. The base is an abstract class (MustInherit)Technically, this means that everytime a child class is instantiated, it lugs around, in memory, its own copy of Name. The thing is, Name is going to be a fixed value for all instances of a given child. I.e., Child1.Name will return "child_object1", and Child2.Name will return "child_object2".

Hide All The Default Properties Of UserControl?

Nov 27, 2010

Is there any simple way to hide all the design time properties of a User Control.

When my UC is on a form there's a lot of properties in the properties explorer. All those default ones that every UC has. AccessibleName, AccessibleRole, Anchor etc etc etc (dozens of the them)

Any way to hide most/all those and just expose my own ?

I suppose I want my User Control to be more like a 'Component' like the Timer and other components that don't have a UI. Short of rewriting my UC as a Component is there any quick way to hide all those form properties ?

Is it possible to change the default properties for different objects in the VB6 IDE (I'm sure any version would be similar, but this is the one we are currently using in my programming class in school). For example, is there anyway that automatically, when I create a Label, that it could already have AutoSize set to false, and BorderStyle to Fixed3D, etc.? I feel as if it would work greatly with the amount of time taken to layout my programs.

Why Do C# Automatic Properties Not Support Default Values

Apr 13, 2010

Looking at the new VB 2010 features, I stumbled upon support for Auto-Implemented Properties.Since I'm working with C#, this seemed quite familiar, but I noticed that VB did add a feature I would love to have in C#: setting a arbitrary default value for the auto-implemented property:I really like the clean usage of auto-properties in C#. This would save us the effort of introducing a backing field and hooking it up to the property everytime we simply need a default value, thereby cluttering up the code unnecessarily.I was wondering why this wasn't introduced in C# as well? What could be the rationale for not doing this? Is a syntax discussion going on, or are there technical limitations to implementing this?

Access A "new" Class Or Something Similar At Runtime?

Feb 20, 2012

Is it possible to access a class or module at runtime that isn't part of the initial application. Simplest way I can explain it is this.Application A reads from DatabaseA and gets a list of "classes/functions/modules (what ever you would like to call them)"Grid gets populated with a bunch of data, one col has the above mentioned info User double clicks on the cell and that function is "fired off" Bascially ApplicaionA would have all the classes that would be needed for the instructions to run.line 1 might look something last this

Columns would be (just an example)

last run | instructionFile | path of instructions | some variable use in the instructions

2/20/2012 13:05 | helloWorld.vb | C:Test | userName

When you click on helloWorld.vb the helloWorld code would be "read and run"

Writing Data From Array In One Class To A Listbox In Another Class

Jul 26, 2011

I'm designing a small GUI Windows program that allow staff at a cinema to reserve seats for customers. There will be a total of 60 seats in the cinema. I have two classes in my program:-

1.) MainForm.vb - used for I/O actions and user interaction

2.) SeatManager.vb - used to hold and handle the background methods and functions that make the program work

Here is the code for my MainForm.vb class thusfar:-

Public Class MainForm
Private Const m_totalNumberOfSeats As Integer = 60
Private m_seatManager As SeatManager

[Code]....

Basically, when the program opens, the lstReservations list in the MainForm class will be populated with a total of 60 (m_totalNumberOfSeats) entries to represent 60 seats. Each of these seats will contain the index number from the array m_nameList; this index number (+1) will represent the seat number and then in the lstReservations list, after the seat number, I'd like it to contain the respective entry from the m_nameList array. As all entries will be held in RAM, when the GUI is opened, all m_nameList array entries will be empty. As the user uses the program, they can highlight a row in the lstReservations list and then use the GUI textboxes to enter the customer's name which will then be populated into the respective array entry.

how to, when the GUI opens, ensure that the lstReservations list takes all of the blank entries from the m_nameList array and from there, I can highlight a row to carry out further methods on?

VB Listbox Cannot Be Indexed Because It Has No Default Value?

Mar 17, 2010

I have a listbox and I want to loop through each of the items to see if the string im looking for is inside. I know I could do .contains but that wouldnt look at substrings. The code im using looks like this:

While tempInt > Listbox.items.count then
if searchString.contains(listbox(tempInt)) then
end if
tempInt+=1
end while

Everything in the loop is fine but VB gives an error on the listbox(tempInt) part. The error is "class windows.forms.listbox cannot be indexed because it has no default value". get around the default value crap? I tried putting in a blank string but no change.
