I have created a simple conversion program, I have two comboBoxes that are populated by a text file called 'data.txt'. It all works perfectly apart from when i have the squared units in it, instead of getting the '' symbol that is in the text file, i get a diamond shape with a question mark inside.
I would think that you must have to put some sort of code before the squared symbol in the text file, but I cannot figure it out.
HTML
Public Sub DataLoad(ByVal Switch As String)
Dim tfLines() As String = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("data.txt") ' File to load.
For Each line As String In tfLines ' Load and read all lines in file.

I'm trying to populate a List Box or Combo Box (either or, I feel like both would be very similar in how the code is written) when you load the form. Here is what I have right now:
<a href="http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y11/funkyfries222/?action=view¤t=ForumHelp.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y11/funkyfries222/ForumHelp.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
When you first open the program it gives you a form with either a list box or combo box (not sure which one I want to use yet) and then an add button to add a name to the list. It shows the from where you enter a name and then when you add a name it adds it to a text file that I have saved onto the desktop. It keeps the names on separate lines and I want each line in the text file to be an item in a list box...
Here is the code for the first form:
Public Class frmEmployeesMeat
Private Sub frmEmployeesMeat_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
frmHours.Visible = False
[code]....

I want to populate a Combo Box with a list of names and from that have the contact information (address, phone, email, ect..) populate a series of textboxes. The list is roughly 20 names, but it could grow to a hundred or more. Since the contact information changes periodically, I would like a very easy way to maintain it (Excel or Access).
Update: I am just trying to understand whether I should use Linq (have to learn it) or is there some other way this should be done.

I have a form with a textbox that holds data relating to job priority. txtPriority.Text = "Low" or "High" I have an amend button on the form that when clicked displays a cmbPriority object with a list that has "Low" and "High" in the list. When I click the amend button I want to the cmbPriority.SelectedText to = whatever is in txtPriority.Text. The item in the field will always be in the list. I have my combo box set to cmbPriority.Dropdownliststyle = DropDownList.

I have an editable ComboBox with a validation on the Text property to make sure manually entered info is valid.EDIT: All I want to do is populate the .Text property with the ValueMember of a selection rather than the DisplayMember I also have the .Items populated with valid entries having the DisplayMember and ValueMember set.My DisplayMember is a caption along with the data, and the ValueMember is the data itself.So Items might be:
(DisplayMember, ValueMember)
"Foo - 1ab2" , "1ab2"
"Bar - 3cd4" , "3cd4"
I had a validation on the text which can also validate manual user input like "5ef6" The problem I'm having is that if the user selects an item from the combobox it populates the text field with the DisplayMember property (ex: "Foo - 1ab2") which will fail validation.I have tried to manually set the .Text property with the SelectedValue or the SelectedItem.Value on each of the three relevant combobox events to no avail.I would like that the .Text of the ComboBox get populated with the .ValueMember of the item when selected rather than the .DisplayMember
EDIT: I cannot validate by trying to extrapolate the value from the caption. I send the Text off to a service to be validated.
void FillMyCombo
{
KeyValuePair<string, string> listValue1 = new KeyValuePair<string, string>("Foo - 1ab2" , "1ab2")
KeyValuePair<string, string> listValue2 = new KeyValuePair<string, string>("Bar - 3cd4" , "3cd4")
[code].....
The user can manually enter something like "5ef6" which will pass validation.But when they select an item from the list, rather than manually entering it, the .Text property gets filled with the caption and not the value ... so it will contain "Foo - 1ab2" and that will fail validation. I cannot change the validation method to "infer" the value from the caption. I have no control over that service. All I'm after is the displayed value EDIT: Say a user selects "Foo - 1ab2" from the dropdown list, I want the text in the box to say "1ab2" EDIT: I have also tried to set the .Text property in code but I can't seem to make it work in any of the ComboBox events. how to programmaticly set the .Text property (and make it commit!) on a selection event they will also answer this question.

I have 2 tables: locations and depot:[code]I have 2 forms, frm1 and frm2. Frm1 has a combobox, cboLocations which pulls from the Locations table. Frm2 has textboxes which populate based upon the location selected from cboLocations on frm1. Frm2 also has a combobox, cboDepot, which pulls from the Depot table.So far, I've been able to get cboDepot to populate with the first depot_refnbr. This is not the corresponding depot_refnbr that matches with the selected Location; it is just the first depot_refnbr in the Depot table.I need to populate cboDepot's text property with the depot_name, and not the depot_refnbr that corresponds with the Location selected on frm1 from cboLocations.Frm1 has a button, and I'm not sure if I'd have to code this in the button click event, the cboLocation_Selected IndexChanged event, or in frm2's load event.

I can understand since .ini files are pretty outdated, but I'll explain. I have a combo box, and inside the combobox I want it to display the names in a section of the .ini file. So say my .ini file contains the following:
[SECTION1]
Name = Billy
Lastname = Bob
Inside the combobox I wan't it to display the items "Name ", and "Lastname " only, not the section or the values.

I'm rewriting a VB6 application in VB.Net. So far I have 2 forms, frmLocations (frm1) and frmLocationInfo (frm2). frmLocations has a combobox, cboLocations, from which a selection is made and an "Ok" button is clicked, which then loads frmLocationInfo. frmLocationInfo has a series of textboxes to display info corresponding to the location that was selected - Location, Location Number, Phone, Fax, Email. There are also 3 comboboxes on frmLocationInfo - cboDepot, cboFreight, and cboDispatcher. I need their text property along with items to be populated, also with data corresponding to the initial selection made on frmLocations. I'll spare you all the difficulties I'm having w/the other comboboxes, and instead focus on cboDepot. I have gotten it to populate its text property to display the corresponding Depot, however, the items are not populating and all you see now when you click on the dropdown arrow is only the depot that shows up in the text property.
Here is the code for this portion.
frmLocationInfo
Private Sub FillDepotCombo()
Dim sql As String = "Select distinct depot.depot_name, depot.depot_refnbr, locations.site from depot inner join locations on depot.depot_refnbr =

I'm attempting to add comma delimited values to a combobox. The problem is I do not know if this is the best way to split the values into the combobox. Is there a more cleaner/efficient way to do this?:
Dim toread As String
toread = ini.ReadValue("Schools", "Schools")
Dim textdelimiter As String
textdelimiter = ","
Dim splitout = Split(toread, textdelimiter)
Dim i As Integer
For i = 0 To UBound(splitout)
ComboBox1.Items.Add(splitout(i))

I'm very new to VB.net/Vb2005. I just finished my first semester learning VB and I'm working on a few personal projects to solidify/increase what I've learned this year. Right now I'm building a simple inventory application that will keep track of individual users at my job.
The problem I'm having is in trying to populate a comboBox with items from a text file. My goal is that when the application loads, a comboBox will be populated with the names of users(located in a text file.) Upon selecting a user, the application will read some other(like users name, windows version, computer name, etc) data from another text file and populate the applications text boxes with that information.
I know how to go about building most of the application, but the problem I'm running into is how to use a text file to populate the comboBox. If I use an array or a collection for the comboBox data, then the user list will be lost each time the application closes. Also, whenver a new user is added, that data will be lost, because the collection or orray will be lost each time the application ends. Also, I don't want to use a database for the program, just a simple file.

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.
I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.
In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:
Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False

I currently have a form with two comboxes. The first cbo is being populated with a project number, which is being pulled from the first column of a spreadsheet. I now want the second cbo to read the first cbo and then find that project number on the spreadsheet; when it finds that project number, I then need it to copy data from the row the project number is on. I have converted to vb from vba. Below is the code I used in vba (which obviously does not work). I only need certain cells from the project row.

I am trying to automate a process I do with a bank with vb.net. Basically I need to open a website and navigate through it (Automatically through the program obviously), enter a batch ID and enter a file path and name. For some reason when I get to the part where I need to enter the file name and path, it simply will not populate the text. I have attached a word document with screenshots and code. The only difference I can see, is that in the bank website's code the the input type for the file text is "FILE" rather than "TEXT" as it is for the batch id...
