Program Files At 64 Bit Windows?

Jun 14, 2010

In order to access Program Files folder, I am using:

My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.ProgramFiles it works fine with 32bit OS.

But on 64bit OS there are two Program Files folders:

1. Program Files
2. Program Files (x86)

The above command accesses Program Files (x86). How can I access Program Files folder in 64bit Windows?

.net - Cannot Create Modify Text File Into Program Files Folder Of Windows 7?

Jul 27, 2011

I make an application and make setup file using VS setup project. This work fine and create default text files into Program Files Folder for winodw 7/vista .but can not modify these files or create any new files.

There are few text files need to create ,modify during application running ,but in windows 7/vista unable to create,modify files.I am using full default admin right for these OS. If iuse C: root path then application work fine or for win XP no problem.I think UAC restricting to perform these opeartion. But i do not know how to change these restriction using vb.net, whenever application start.

I found one solution that , if change user rights manually then this problem solved.Follow these step to change your account settings.Control Panel-->User Accounts and Family Safety-->User Accounts-->Change User Account Control settings-->Never notify(Set tab to never notify).After this change need to restart system.Now can make all changes like windows XP into Windows 7.can also make changes into program files.

Its working fine, but need to make these changes manually in OS.but its not efficent solution. So if any one knows how can make these changes by coding that will nice.

VS2010 .NET And Windows 7 Access Denied On Writing To Or Creating Files In Project Files Folder?

May 22, 2012

Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.

After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option.What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.

So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.

Retrieve File Details From Files In The Program Files Folder?

Dec 26, 2009

I am trying to retrieve file details from files in the Program Files folder. I receive an error while trying to retrieve file details.

Dim sFileName As String = ("%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe")
Dim Info As FileVersionInfo
Info = FileVersionInfo.GetVersionInfo(sFileName)
Msgbox(Info.ProductName.ToString())

I receive file not found error at 3rd line. But if I change the path from "%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe" to "c:Program FilesWindows DefenderMSASCui.exe" it works fine.

What should I do if I want to retrieve file details from the path which includes a "%" character?

VS 2008 Create New Files Alongside Itself In The Program Files Area?

Jul 30, 2009

Having a slight permission problem with Win 7 I am guessing it will be the same on Vista but work fine on XP (yet to try)But my program is sitting in: C:Program FilesCompanyProgram And its trying to create new files alongside itself in the Program Files area but bombing out which I know is permissions. If I go there to create the file myself it comes up with a UAC prompt and when I hit allow it works fine but obv the program can't do that byiteslf so bombs out.Is there anyway I can over come that without the user having to grant admin rights to the program each time it starts or do I have to write data to another place?

File I/O And Registry :: AVI Header - Program To Download And Play AVI Files The Files Are Large In Size And Long Time Wise

Dec 11, 2011

I wrote a program to download and play AVI files the files are large in size and long time wise. I have the files playing as they are being downloaded but i can't see how long the file is or seek reliably. i was reading that the AVI headers are in the last 512kb of the AVI file *why would't they put it at the start* lol so my question is is there a way to download the last 512Kb of the file i'm downloading. i have the Bytes Read and Length of the file while its downlaoding i'm just not sure where to go from there, or how to do it atleast. If i had the length in time of the Avi file i could set the trackbar to be able to seek properly. or if someone has an idea how i could get the time of the video by using fps and some math i could prob do it that way too but idk how i would tell how i can find how many kb are in the fps i'm sure it changes so think that way is't going to be reliable. how to get the last 512kb would be the best option not sure if it can be done even.

DB/Reporting :: Database - Access Denied To A Text File (since It's Stored In The Program Directory In The Program Files)

Sep 20, 2010

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.

Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?

Here's an example of what I would do:

Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc

So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).

So to cap up the few questions I have:

-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

Blocking Windows Users From Using Windows But My Program?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm developing a program which would be the only program user will use. What i mean by this is once the windows is up, my program will run and blocks users from accessing any other program installed or comes with Windows such as internet explorer, email client, games, etc.. unless user puts password for getting out of my program.

BTW, the OS will be Windows XP.What i want to accomplish by having this is like below:

1. No one would be able to use internet (= no virus)

2. No one would be able to change system time (= no record corruption)

3. No one would be able to install any program (= less system maintenance)

My program is Kind of interactive Kiosk program only certain user can access windows and other programs.Also when it comes to system maintenance, I will remotely access the computer using pcAnywhere or teamviewer like remote access tool.So after exiting the program, i should be able to use entire system w/o any restriction.

Rich Text Box - Program That Will Read From Various Text Files (preferably RTF Files)

Apr 20, 2009

Im designing a program that will read from various text files (preferably RTF files) and then put them into the RTF box in the program when a button is clicked.

Here is the portion of my code that i am referring to.

Try
Dim fileText As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText("c:\" & selectedHero & ".rtf")

infoDisplay.AppendText(fileText)
infoDisplay.Rtf.Format()

Catch
MsgBox("Selected Hero currently has no File with us.")
End Try

Now heres the problem. In the file i have a few pictures and its formatted and what not. I thought since its a RTF file and the Box is RTF it would auto format.... but anyways. It appears like this in the RTF Box.

{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Arial;}}
{\*\generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20{\object\objemb{\*\objclass Paint.Picture}\objw3000\objh3000{\*\objdata

[CODE]...

Ok so im not sure how i can read from a RTF file and put it in the RTF box with the right format....Ive been searching around for a while.

So the issue is that I had made this program for my work but when i put it on my work computer, it wouldnt even open, i double click it, it sits for a bit, then MP3Randomizer.exe has encountered a problem. Any idea why it works on my 64 bit windows 7 personal laptop but not my 32 bit windows xp work comp. I have created programs on my laptop and then dragged them to my work computer and they worked just fine. Is it the windows media player component? Never had this problem with any of my other programs. The program was compiles with .net framework 4 and my work comp has .net framework 4 on it, it is set to compile as x86. I cant figure it out. A

Is there a way to copy files where it gives you the option to overwrite all and show graphically the files being copied, in much the same way when copying files within windows.What I have at the moment is this:

My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile(DataDirectory.DataSource, BackupPath & "Restel.bak", True)
For Each FileFound As String In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(SystemDataPath & "", FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "*.rtf")
FileName = My.Computer.FileSystem.GetName(FileFound)
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile(FileFound, BackupPath & "" & FileName, FileIO.UIOption.AllDialogs, FileIO.UICancelOption.ThrowException)
Next

which overwrites automatically or shows it graphically prompting each time if the file already exists.
