Object Variable Or With Block Variable Not Set - From Property Get With Bindingsource.current?

May 31, 2012

Now I have the need to get a current value from a bindingsource in a property of a user control. In a previous thread I had tracked down the "Object variable or With block variable not set" to the return in the Get block of a property. At the time I was only using the Set so I just commented out the offending code until I needed it.

[Code]...

The error does not occur during a system compile, only upon saving the container object of the user control. As I said the Set works correctly, only the Get causes the error.I would like to know what I am missing/misunderstanding and am open to other suggestions of handling retrieving the current value of a bindingsource in a user control.

.net - Winform: Cursor In Wrong Location On Backslash Or Delete

May 25, 2012

I set up a sort of filter on my textBox in WinForms, to exclude particular characters from being entered by the client.

a) Clicking BackSlash causes the cursor to move to the front of the string of characters, rather than remain at the correct position

b) Subsequent clicks of BACKSLASH still causes deletion from the correct location but the cursor remains at the beginning of the string

Private Sub txtExp_KeyPress(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles txtExp.KeyPress
Dim strtext As String = txtExp.Text

[Code]....

What I would like instead is to have the cursor in the correct location at all times.

Use The Variable Instead Of Value For A Property In Form Designer

I am working in VB.Net 2010 framework 2.0. Suppose i declares a property

[Code]....

In the form designer, the property "MyColor" will be seen the value as 150, 145, 145. I want to see this value as "NewColor" in form designer. This is the same like ControlDark, ActiveBorder etc. system colors. I want that instead of the color value, designer should show the variable name. The .Net framework also use the above implementation for System Colors and same i want to do.

.net - Declare A Local Variable Whenever Access A Property?

May 7, 2011

say i have an auto property Public Property P As Integer and everytime I want to read this variable P in a function, i will declare a local variable as such: dim _p = P then read _p instead of P. I'm wondering does it make sense at all? will it actually make things slower (which of course isn't my intention).Btw if we change the question to Public Property P As Object is there any change in the answer?

Do properties simply provide a more efficient way for doing the same thing? Will properties be any slower than the above accessor functions in a high performance application?

Dynamically Referencing Class Property With A Variable?

So Im iterating through the properties of a class. For each property Im iterating through a datatable until I find a column name with the same name as the property.

No worries so far, here's the isse: Once I've found a match I want to set the class's property to the value in the datatable but I'm having difficulty referencing the property as it has to be done through a variable.

Code:

Dim t As Type = per.GetType

VS 2005 Store / Retrieve Variable Or Property?

Oct 27, 2009

In the application I'm documenting, sometimes a value is stored in a Public variable & other times it's passed to/from a Public Property which does nothing except store it in/retrieve it from a Private variable. (And in one memorable exception, the Public Property stored it in a Public variable-I'm almost certain that was an oversight by the original programmer though.)

I know that passing it to/from the Public Property has the potential for better validation, but if the Property doesn't actually do anything except store/retrieve it is there any benefit to declaring it as a Property? (Or maybe I should put that the other way around. Personally I'd declare them all as properties because that will allow adding validation later-but I'm not rewriting this, I'm just trying to document it and, in this case, trying to figure out why sometimes it's done as a property & sometimes as a Public variable.)

2008 - Error: WithEvents Variable 'CompanyName' Conflicts With Property

I've got a TEXTBOX called CompanyName. And I've got a warning in the error tab that says:

WithEvents variable 'CompanyName' conflicts with property 'CompanyName' in the base class 'Control' and should be declared 'Shadows'.

Is CompanyName some kind of reserved keyword? I'm getting the same error for a textbox called Location. Can I ignore these warnings or must I rename my textboxes. My problem is the textboxes are named to match columns in a DB TABLE to allow me to do some auto-binding logic.

Alter The .visible Property Of A Label Based On If A Variable Is Positive Or Negative?

Apr 11, 2010

I want to alter the .visible property of a label based on if a variable is positive or negative (Hiding it for negative values)
But I want to do this for lots of labels so If Statements are too bulky.

I tried this:

Label1.visible = CBool(IntVariable1)

But it turns out CBool returns True for ANY value and False for Zero.I'd assumed it would be True for positive values and False for negatives. How can I do it without if statements?I considered Modulo or SquareRoots to somehow convert a negative number into zero, but didn't want to complicate things with imaginary numbers.

Late Binding - Declaring A String Variable And Assigning The Item Property?

Nov 27, 2011

I have a problem involving late binding, and I absolutely cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix it. I have spent hours researching the problem to no avail, so I am turning to stackoverflow as a last resort. The problem is pretty much this: I am creating a grocery list application. I have a class named Item which stores the name, price, quantity, and description of an item on the grocery list. I have a module named ListCollection which defines a Collection of Item objects. I have created an Edit form which will automatically display the currently selected ListCollection item properties, but whenever I attempt to fill the text boxes, it tells me that Option Strict disallows late binding. I COULD take the easy route and disable Option Strict, but I'd prefer to figure out what the problem is so I know for future reference.I shall paste pertinent code here. (Late binding error is in EditItem.vb)

[code]...

I have tried declaring a String variable and assigning the Item property to that, and I have also tried grabbing the value directly from the List item (not using the Get function), and neither of these made a difference.

Backslash Character In String Causes String To Evaluate As "nothing" In WCF?

May 24, 2011

I have a WCF application, written in VB.NET that takes a generic Dictionary(Of String, String) as one of the parameters. When I pass in a Key/Value pair that has a backslash as one of the characters in the value, the client automatically changes the entire value to Nothing or in the XML it shows this:

<Value i:nil="true />

Is there some special way to escape backslashes when passing them in a string to a WCF service? As far as I know the backslash isn't a reserved character in XML.

.net - If An Interface Defines A ReadOnly Property, How Can An Implementer Provide The Setter To This Property

Jun 10, 2011

Is there a way for implementers of an interface where a ReadOnly property is defined to make it a complete Read/Write Property ?

Imagine I define an interface to provide a ReadOnly Property (i.e., just a getter for a given value) :

Interface SomeInterface
'the interface only say that implementers must provide a value for reading
ReadOnly Property PublicProperty As String
End Interface

This means implementers must commit to providing a value. But I would like a given implementer to also allow setting that value. In my head, this would mean providing the Property's setter as part of the implementation, doing something like this :

Public Property PublicProperty As String Implements SomeInterface.PublicProperty
Get
Return _myProperty

Reflection - Find From A Property Info Object If That Property Has A Non Public (Private / Protected) Setter?

I tried, in a exception handling block, where I did a GetValue of the PropertyInfo object and then called SetValue by setting the same value back... but to my surprise it worked well and didn error out.
