Access Private Class Variable Names?

Jan 9, 2009

Trying to understand the best way to do this and I'm can't get it figured. Here's basically what I have:

Public Class CardParsingClass
Private iAcctIDStart as integer
Private iAcctIDLength as integer

[code]....

I've only included 2 of the class level fields here but there are actually 30, so that's why I was hoping to be able to send the name of the field to set and the value to set it at in the SetValue function. So in some other routine in the program I'd like to be able to issue the following call:

SetValue("iAcctIDStart", "3")

But then when I get into the SetValue routine, I'm not sure how to proceed. I thought about a case statement that would basically be this:

select Case strFieldToSet
case "iAcctIDStart"
iAcctIDStart = cint(strValue)

[code]....

Can't Set DataTable Class Level Variable = Class Table Property?

Sep 29, 2011

I have procedure (Import) that calls a for a new instance of frmImportData. I also have a class name clsBatch that has a data table property called prpParametersTable.For some reason, I get an error (indicated below with ERROR>>>) when trying to assign prpParameterTable to cv_dtImport2. The error states "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". Why does this error not happen when I assign dtBP to cv_dtImport1? Both cv_dtImport1 and cv_dtImport2 are equal to Nothing and in my Import procedure dtBP = prpParametersTable.

Public Sub Import(ByVal clsB As clsBatch)
Try
Me.cv_clsB = clsB

Class Property Usage - Unable To Retrieve A Variable From On Class

Nov 14, 2009

I have three class files, accounts.vb and transactions.vb in addition to my form.vb. I am unable to retrieve a member variable from on class from inside the other. When the combobox index changes, the program loads the correct account (checking or saving) from two different sequential files. I don't think I have the calcBalance procedure in the correct class file. And that is what I am having trouble with. Accessing it to display it. [Code]

Private Read/Write Access And Public Readonly Access For Variable In Class?

In other words, from within my class I want full access and from my form I only want read access. Right now I declare my variable as either Private or Public to control Public read/write access. I tried googling my question a bit but I'm not sure what the correct terms even ar

Dynamically Referencing Class Property With A Variable?

Feb 4, 2009

So Im iterating through the properties of a class. For each property Im iterating through a datatable until I find a column name with the same name as the property.

No worries so far, here's the isse: Once I've found a match I want to set the class's property to the value in the datatable but I'm having difficulty referencing the property as it has to be done through a variable.

Code:
Dim per As New Person
Dim t As Type = per.GetType
For Each p As PropertyInfo In t.GetProperties

Reflection - Find From A Property Info Object If That Property Has A Non Public (Private / Protected) Setter?

Aug 27, 2009

I searched on the forum / Internet for the solution how a PropetryInfo object (of a Public property) can reveal if it has a Private Protected Setter ... it was all in vain .... all help I found was about how to "Set" value of a public property having a Private Setter.I would like to know if I have a PropertyInfo object of a public property, how would I know if its Setter is Non Public?

I tried, in a exception handling block, where I did a GetValue of the PropertyInfo object and then called SetValue by setting the same value back... but to my surprise it worked well and didn error out.

Difference Between A Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables?

Jul 22, 2009

give me a good resource that explains the difference between a Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables? I normally use Public for Subs/Functions inside of Modules I call from other parts of the program. But I'd like to get more of an understanding of how and when to use them. I want as little as impact to a system that is running my programs as possible, so i guess the key here is I'm trying to just get more proficient in my coding.

Unit Test Private Functions From A Separate Project?

As I develop code, I often want to unit test some of the building blocks of a class even if they are normally private. If my unit tests are inside the project, I can use "Friend" to accomplish this and still keep the functions private for normal use. C# - ReadOnly Property Or Property With Private Set Should Use?

Jan 26, 2012

I Like .NET automatic properties, in C# it so easy to declare readonly property by declaring its set section as private like this:

public String Name{ get; private set; }

But when I tried that in VB.NET I was shocked that it is not supported as mentioned here and I have to write it as follows:

Private _Name as String
Public ReadOnly Property Name as String
Get

[Code].....

What the difference between these declarations in VB.NET, which one is preferred and Why?

Which one will affect compile time, runtime or performance at all?

VS 2008 - Shadow The Item Property Of My Collections To Retrieve The Actual Data?

Oct 6, 2010

I am trying to solve an issue in my application where the following exception is occurring: there is already an open datareader associated with this command which must be closed first. I am using TableAdapters, which maintain their own DataReaders, and everything seems to work fine unless I am interacting with one of my background workers.

In my code, I shadow the Item property of my collections so that I can retrieve the actual data from the database if needed. Here is a sample:

[code]...

Now each reference to the Item get property instantiates its own DataAdapter, so I am confused as to how the same DataReader will ever be used in this scenario. Is there something I am missing? All the TableAdapters do in fact use the same connection object, but I wouldn't think that would be a problem

Public Overridable Property DesignId() As Integer

Private Set(ByVal value As Integer)

End Property

It says property cannot be overrideable because it has a private accessor.

Private Or Protected Set For A MustOverride Property?

Jul 24, 2010

I'd like to have a Private or Protected "Setter" for a property that also happens to be an abstract (MustOverride). I'm porting some code from C# to VB and in C# this is pretty straight forward. In VB not so much (for me anyway).

Some code...

In C#...
public abstract class BaseClassWithAnAbstractProperty
{
public abstract int AnAbstractIntegerProperty { get; protected set; }
}

[Code]....

The issue seems to be the inability to flesh-out the Get/Set specifics in the declaration.
