i have have a few questions about the syntax of the lan.:
1) What is the 'Get' statement and when do you use it?
2) Whats the difference between public, private, protected etc... when declaring functions and subs.
3) When would you use the overrides property?
give me a good resource that explains the difference between a Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables? I normally use Public for Subs/Functions inside of Modules I call from other parts of the program. But I'd like to get more of an understanding of how and when to use them. I want as little as impact to a system that is running my programs as possible, so i guess the key here is I'm trying to just get more proficient in my coding.

View 8 RepliesI searched on the forum / Internet for the solution how a PropetryInfo object (of a Public property) can reveal if it has a Private Protected Setter ... it was all in vain .... all help I found was about how to "Set" value of a public property having a Private Setter.I would like to know if I have a PropertyInfo object of a public property, how would I know if its Setter is Non Public?
I tried, in a exception handling block, where I did a GetValue of the PropertyInfo object and then called SetValue by setting the same value back... but to my surprise it worked well and didn error out.

View 4 RepliesBasicly I have a set of public subs, (not related to a form), inside a public class, and all of them share a variable. One of the subs, the one called for first gives the variable a value.
When the next sub is called, the variable is null. The data in the variable has been erased as the execution of the prior public sub ended I'm guessing.
I'm almost sure that I've seen this somewhere, but I can't find it anymore. Or maybe I'm imagining it, which would'nt be strange either.
When creating a sub or function and adding parameters used when calling it.
-Is it possible to list the parameters that I can enter when using it somewhere in my code?
E.g.
Public Sub MessageMain(ByVal Message As String, ByVal MessageType As String (List of possible values for MessageType)) Same for example as when you have boolean values in a sub/function. As soon as you use that somewhere in your code intellisense will present you with True/False to select.
I'd like the same for parameters in subs or functions I create and calling them from somewhere in my code. Saves me the trouble of remembering which options are available for those parameters.

I have these list of RS-232 strings declared in my public class

I then have this private sub. For the sake of this thread, what I would like to do is get the name of the label that was clicked which in the code below is already done, convert it to string (not sure if this needs to be done), this is also done in the code below. Next I want to compare the labelnamestring to all the variables in the public class to find out which one it is equal to and then disply that variable which should be my rs232 string in the message box. I have also added "Cmd" to the variable names above so I also need to work out how to add the text "Cmd" to the string to properly compare.

I have a form named FrmDrvouchers. It contains some public subprocedures.I call these subs from another form which opens from a form which is opened from FrmDrVouchers as a dialog.When I open FrmDrvouchers directly, everything works. But when I call FrmDrvouchers from another project which is also part of this solution, its public subs don't work when I call them from another (dialog) form.
Here is the code of the Button Click from which I open FrmDrvouchers:

I have an array that I created in a sub with a button. I was wondering how I could use this array in other subs after it has been created. I tried making it public and global, but it didn't work.
View 10 RepliesEarlier I was working on a project, and I added a StatusToolStrip and the the ToolStrip I added a label and a progress bar. The label will say the current sub or function that is in progress and the progress bar will show how far along it is through the sub or function. I have tried this myself but I cannot figure it out as I rarely use progress bars.
An example of a code that I would like the progress bar to show would be like this:

This is very basic about the layout of classes, subs etc. 1. Should all my subs & functions always be inside a class? I haven't used classes too much before, mostly just a bunch of subs in a form file. Now I downloaded a sample program which I want to develop. This has all the code of the form inside "Public Class Form1": [Code] The code is an example of use of the ZedGraph library. It produce a simple window with one graph/chart. Now I want to develop this code with several tabs, a dusin different charts, file I/O and so on. I'm ok with most of the specific coding, but my question is on the general coding;
2. Should I continue my subs&functions inside this form? inside this class? inside a new class? Earlier when I've NOT been using class, I can make global variables by placing the "Dim" outside the subs. This does not seem to work within a class. 3. Should I avoid global variables all together, or how is this done without always passing arguments?
Also I will make more forms, for program options etc. 4. Should these forms be coded as classes? or just subs&functions in a form? Obviously I'm not well trained on the proper use of classes and have trouble to find this easily explained.
I'd like to have a Private or Protected "Setter" for a property that also happens to be an abstract (MustOverride). I'm porting some code from C# to VB and in C# this is pretty straight forward. In VB not so much (for me anyway).

The issue seems to be the inability to flesh-out the Get/Set specifics in the declaration.
I come from C# (use VS 2005, .NET 2) and I know that when I declare a private variable I can "extract" from it the corresponding "property". In VB.NET I've declared a lot of properties (in the diagram class designer). Now am I forced manually adding the corresponding private fields?

Upon execution, it tells me that it cannot find the entry point in the .dll.
At the head of a module, I wish to declare some global variables for use in various subs/functions.
What is the difference between.Dim x as string and Private x as string / Public x as string, and when would I use one over the other?
When I code in PHP I usually keep my functions in a separate file functions.php, I am going to write a small function in VB, is it ok to keep all my functions and subs in the 1 file linke in PHP? will they be available in all my form code?

I had to make the BBBB() shared to be able to call it from another function AAAAAA() from another class PPPPP. However, I get error on the references in the BBBBB(), that CCCC() and DDDD() have to be made also shared (so instead of 1 error I got number of errors).
When I tried to make them shared as well, I got tens and tens of errors due to other references of both variables and functions.
How would I go about dynamically declaring a constant? (It's value is dynamic, not the variable name)
