I wrote a little (like 40 lines little) Winforms application with VB.net in Visual Studio 2010. Now I've released the code as a Google Code project. It's easy for a developer to get the source but I'd like to make it easy to install too.
What I did was make a release build then zip up what it created, this included a setup.exe. There was also an option to "publish" my project which looks like it can enable update checks and other stuff.
I have a Form with a Media Player in it. Which plays a Song.

It's playing in the background since the Form is hidden. When I play itin Debug, everything works fine. When I run the app outside Debug, I get this error: [URL] The Music File is there, but strangely, there comes this weird error.
I am using 2008 Express Edition. I am trying to make a Release build instead of a Debug build.Under Tools->Options, Projects and Solutions->General - I checked Show advanced build configurations. The option to switch configurations does not show up in the IDE.
After this, I went to the Project Properties->Compile and switched the Configuration from Active(Debug) to Release.After building, I looked in my project directory, however only in the Debug sub-directory was the .exe and nothing in the Release sub-directory.I have used Visual C++ Express Edition, where I noticed that if you do not change to Release in the IDE than after changing to Release in properties, resets the project to the last configuration setting which is usually Debug.how to make the Debug/Release box available in the IDE, since Tools/Options does not make it show up?
I have some very simple questions about making a release build exe in vb.net using MS VB 2010 Express.
I realize that my project's executable is built in the bin/debug folder. However, when I copy this to any other location on my computer or someone else's, this executable does not function. I have read that I need to create a release build but in MS VB 2010 Express, when I use the Project-Properties menu and change the Compile tab configuration to Release and the path to binRelease, I still get the exe in the binDebug folder and not the binRelease folder.
1) Is it normal that exe's from the debug folder do not function outside of the debug folder?
2) Most importantly, if the release build produces a faster exe, could someone please explain step by step how to do this with MS VB 2010 Express ? I do not see any button on the compile tab in the project properties that actually builds the release.
Now I did a clean build, and tried to publish, and I get a lot of errors and warnings that I don't understand.

I have a dll library that I built to help reduce the amount of boilerplate code copied over from project to project. There is a timer running in the dll to maintain the connection to our machinery via RPC. When I debug my project and break the RPC connection my code gracefully tosses a disconnect event from the dll library and my main form catches the event and handles it appropriately.Now, build for release. When I break the RPC connection a unhandled exception is tossed from the library that apparently is not caught elsewhere.
The weird part is that the code that is throwing the exception is in the timer and the calls are all wrapped in try/catch blocks and the catch block swallows the exception and does other cleanup work.I don't get how in debug mode everything is fine but in release it is not. That part doesn't make sense to me. I tried looking at the exception object and setting a handled property on it but it's not available. Is this normal behavior what I am seeing?
I just recently started utilizing numerous libraries in my projects to keep my solutions more trimmed and easy to follow. Hopefully this isn't a problem with libraries I had not considered.
I have a form and I drag and drop a control in VB.NET. I have a line say,

Now, When I build this is .NET 3.5 in release mode, and see the generated code in reflector tool, the code is something like:

View 4 RepliesI'm looking for a way to have my code build two copies of itself at once.The program has an "A" and a "B" configuration that need to be compiled as Prog-A.exe and Prog-B.exe every time the code is compiled. I can do this manually, but I assume there's some way to do it in code? What I'd like is to use conditional compilation to have the A configuration compile so that it runs a "setup as A"-type method on load, and the B likewise, and then have it compile both versions each time.
View 1 RepliesEvery time I compile a new release build in vb.net 2009, the file version number of my main exe is correct, but the assembly version number is the same as the last build instead of the current version even though I manually change the file and assembly version in the design studio to be the same prior to compiling.The only way I can get the assembly version to be correct is to close Visual Studio and delete the obj folder. Then if I open the solution and recompile, all is well.

Using Build ---> Publish is nice, but it installs (on the client's machine) into an esoterically-named directory. As you can imagine, this is a nightmare to backup. Does anyone know how I can direct this thing to install into a directory that I choose?

I have been reading about Clickonce and it looks like a nice solution for my project. I actually tried it already but I recieved an error message "forbidden" I think there is an issue with my hosting site? Anyway I have been reading and am a bit confused to these different terms. Is build what I would use if I want to add-in a set-up / installer package with program with an exe file, sort of like the traditional way of handing someone a disk and they install it on there machine? 1) Cannot publish because a project failed to build.
2) An error occurred while signing: SignTool.exe not found.
Regarding #1, I can manually build and rebuild the application without error. I only get this error when I try to Publish.
Regarding #2, I looked in my SDKv3.5Bin directory and indeed the signtool was not there. In fact I only had 3 files (genasm.exe, genasm.exe.config, and hidpi.res). I copied the signtool.exe from the Visual Studio 2005, (file dated 10/26/2006), but I still get the same error saying it can not find the file.

I publish a VisualBasic 2008 windows application, from the Build menu,but when I install it by running the installation's setup.exe, an unusual popup window showing Windows connected to the Internet pops momentarily, and then the application opens and runs.But the application's .exe is not in Start > Programs, or on the desktop, or anywhere.Publishing and installation worked perfectly a few weeks ago.

I am also displaying the "CreationTime" (see below) that I thought was when the Build or Publish was done. Today I realized it is displaying the date/time when the application is actually installed on the PC. How do I pull the date when the this version was compiled, Built, or Published? I really do not care which -I just want a constant date the sticks with that version. I'm using VB 2005.

When I use the Publish command in the Build menu pillar nothing happens expcept for a few seconds showing the wait cursor. This was working a week or two back but I have now installed sp1 for Visual Studio 2010 - is this a bug or is there some way. I can get this working again. I cannot access the project properties either, which is a known problem with SP1, so how to edit the project.vbproj file.

The situation: when i build my project (or publish) Visual Basic 2010 makes and exe and a couple ddl files. when i run the project with the .exe and the other files the program works perfectly.
My problem: I want to share it with friends and it is just a verry little program ( a n internet radio) so i want it to be 1 .exe with out any other instalation needed so i can easly share it to anyone who wants it. when i make an even smaller program and Debud->build it, it is only 1 exe and no instalation needed. so is there a way to make my program to 1 exe only?
Is there a way to undo "Build" or "Publish" actions (like unbuilding/unpublishing) in order to get the original files/folders of the application? I am creating a program for a homework assignment and we aren't supposed to build or publish our applications but I didn't save my project before building and publishing it (out of curiosity) and I didn't upload the application's folder to the FTP server before so now there are "extra" files and folders (created during the build/publish process) and I don't know which ones are the "extras" and which I need to upload.

A particular VB.NET project is actually throwing 'Build Failed' But when I try rebuilding again it says 'Rebuild Succeeded'. It keeps alternating this behavior. Kind of random. Any vbc.exe issue of long locking the PDB or xml files?

Can you tell me how to test these events? My postbuild event, I believe calls a project file in the solution file that wraps files together in a bundle in debug mode. Can you tell me how the posbuild event works and when it is called?
