I am using VS2010. I have a project that has been deployed for several years. Project builds fine but now suddenly I get the message "Cannot publish because a project failed to build. This program is been updated and published hundreds of times.
View 11 RepliesI am getting two errors
1) Cannot publish because a project failed to build.
2) An error occurred while signing: SignTool.exe not found.
Regarding #1, I can manually build and rebuild the application without error. I only get this error when I try to Publish.
Regarding #2, I looked in my SDKv3.5Bin directory and indeed the signtool was not there. In fact I only had 3 files (genasm.exe, genasm.exe.config, and hidpi.res). I copied the signtool.exe from the Visual Studio 2005, (file dated 10/26/2006), but I still get the same error saying it can not find the file.
Now I did a clean build, and tried to publish, and I get a lot of errors and warnings that I don't understand.

Dear Sir,When I publish my package, i am getting the following error.

I think this can be solved by Changing the validity in the signing property of the package. But I'm not able to change this period.
The situation: when i build my project (or publish) Visual Basic 2010 makes and exe and a couple ddl files. when i run the project with the .exe and the other files the program works perfectly.
My problem: I want to share it with friends and it is just a verry little program ( a n internet radio) so i want it to be 1 .exe with out any other instalation needed so i can easly share it to anyone who wants it. when i make an even smaller program and Debud->build it, it is only 1 exe and no instalation needed. so is there a way to make my program to 1 exe only?
A particular VB.NET project is actually throwing 'Build Failed' But when I try rebuilding again it says 'Rebuild Succeeded'. It keeps alternating this behavior. Kind of random. Any vbc.exe issue of long locking the PDB or xml files?
View 9 RepliesSo when i build or click debug on my program. No errors come up and its smooth. So i decide to publish my programme. However. I come up with a bunch of errors during the publishing.
Here they are:Error 1 Cannot publish because a project failed to build. 1 1 Simple CALC
Error 2 Unable to copy file "binReleaseSimple CALC.exe.manifest" to "binReleaseapp.publishApplication FilesSimple CALC_1_0_0_0Simple CALC.exe.manifest". The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.
I'm looking for a way to have my code build two copies of itself at once. The program has an "A" and a "B" configuration that need to be compiled as Prog-A.exe and Prog-B.exe every time the code is compiled. I can do this manually, but I assume there's some way to do it in code? What I'd like is to use conditional compilation to have the A configuration compile so that it runs a "setup as A"-type method on load, and the B likewise, and then have it compile both versions each time.
View 1 RepliesI wrote a little (like 40 lines little) Winforms application with VB.net in Visual Studio 2010. Now I've released the code as a Google Code project. It's easy for a developer to get the source but I'd like to make it easy to install too.
What I did was make a release build then zip up what it created, this included a setup.exe. There was also an option to "publish" my project which looks like it can enable update checks and other stuff.
Using Build ---> Publish is nice, but it installs (on the client's machine) into an esoterically-named directory. As you can imagine, this is a nightmare to backup. Does anyone know how I can direct this thing to install into a directory that I choose?
View 1 RepliesThis is probably a simple question, but usually I develop ASP using VB.I have a small project where I am in need of creating an executable that will be a process that runs on a schedule with no user interaction. What type of Project do I create?Do I do a Windows Form application, build it and publish just the exe?I really don't need an actual window form, I just need the code to run.
View 3 RepliesExplanation of Build verse Publish Compile in simple english. I have my first appication I want to now deploy. I have been reading about Clickonce and it looks like a nice solution for my project. I actually tried it already but I recieved an error message "forbidden" I think there is an issue with my hosting site? Anyway I have been reading and am a bit confused to these different terms. Is build what I would use if I want to add-in a set-up / installer package with program with an exe file, sort of like the traditional way of handing someone a disk and they install it on there machine? Publish appears to what is used for the click once, but I dont think thats the only thing. I can publish to a disk? It looks like I can publish to my own computer until i figure out my website issue and test the program from there?

I publish a VisualBasic 2008 windows application, from the Build menu, but when I install it by running the installation's setup.exe, an unusual popup window showing Windows connected to the Internet pops momentarily, and then the application opens and runs. But the application's .exe is not in Start > Programs, or on the desktop, or anywhere.Publishing and installation worked perfectly a few weeks ago.

I have a "ClickOnce" application and on the Splash screen I display the Version. I am also displaying the "CreationTime" (see below) that I thought was when the Build or Publish was done. Today I realized it is displaying the date/time when the application is actually installed on the PC. How do I pull the date when the this version was compiled, Built, or Published? I really do not care which -I just want a constant date the sticks with that version. I'm using VB 2005.

Last night my project worked just fine. I left my system up overnight and came in this morning - my project is still on the screen, so there was no update/reboot or any of that. I added 6 lines of code, and suddenly get Build Failed. I removed those lines of code, and still get Build Failed. I restarted Visual Studio, and still get Build Failed. No Exception is ever thrown and no cause for a failed build is ever given. Output is set to Diagnostic, and it indicates nothing wrong or out of the ordinary - every task completes successfully right up to the end when it says Build Failed.
View 6 RepliesWhen I use the Publish command in the Build menu pillar nothing happens expcept for a few seconds showing the wait cursor. This was working a week or two back but I have now installed sp1 for Visual Studio 2010 - is this a bug or is there some way. I can get this working again. I cannot access the project properties either, which is a known problem with SP1, so how to edit the project.vbproj file.
View 2 RepliesI suddenly started having a problem with .vb pages refusing to build in ASP.NET 2010. No errors were displayed but the Output window would display something like:

I made a change to a project and hve induced a major problem. I have warnings and errors now, but I can still debug the project with the "last successful build" Iwould like to just revert everything to that build but I can't find a way to eliminate the problems I induced or find a way to go to a earlier build. Hopefully I can get back to an earlier version or I will loose the entire project as I can no longer get to the designer.
View 5 RepliesI am using 8 different vb projects in one solution, beside this I am also using one 3rd party control ion all the projects, while compiling the application it takes around 5 minutes to build the project, While building the application I have observe that it uses lc.exe file which is used for "Reads text files that contain licensing information and produces a .licenses file that can be embedded in a common language run time executable." at this point it takes too much time.

I downloaded the .net 3.5 sp1 and it performed a repair but it still will not publish.
I have a finished project which is to be distributed via CD-ROM. The project has been previously built and published without problems but now will not do either. I am getting the following:Cannot publish because a project failed to build. The signer's certificate is not valid for signing.
View 3 Replieshow if it possible to publish program straight to wep. I asked before another question about publishing and making setup files, that worked well. But now I have finished other of my programs and I want to know can I somehow add it straight to wep site? I have now used suntuubi.com as own wep site, it's not the best but its free :) And I have usually posted a link to download setup from mediafire (or some other) but can I run that program from my page without any downloads? I made that program with windows forms application, do I need to use wbf broswer application? ( if so, can I somehow fastly switch it without making everything again?) And one more, if it is possible in some other wep site than suntuubi.com can you recommend it?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to publish a project that is 100% working, so that people can use ClickOnce to install it.Despite the project building and running fine, I am unable to publish it. Here is a cut and paste of the error [code]...
View 8 RepliesI am coming to the end of coding this system in Visual Studios 2008 which I took over from a guy who has worked on it for a year.He is not here anymore. He made 9 projects and put them into one solution(screen shot below).I have only published a .NET website for VB and have never published something like this.P3Data is the only one that the publishing tab comes up with. All the other projects the publishing tab does not come up. Why is P3Data bold? How can I publish the whole solution 'P3Data' as one whole entity?
View 5 RepliesI have tried to publish my program. For the time being, no errors when save or do anything. Then again, when I check the database (Ms Access 2007) that is being used, there is no data in there.
My program is to capture image. The image is captured in put in folder but no data at all in my database. How to solve this?
I have setup Build = content and copytooutputdirectory = copy if newer.
I have finished developing a small, completely useless but working project. It was my first in VB.
What i wouold like to know is how is the best way to get this project online for download?
I dont have a web site or web page, and this project is just a bit of fun (fitness test).
Could anyone tell me the steps I have to take? All i want from it, is to be able to place a series of screen shots explaining the project and then if someone should wish to download it they can.
I dont need prime time internet coverage, just a place to put it online, pref free. Plus, there have been many kind people from this forum who have given me thier free time and effort to help me with code issues, so if I am allowed and any one is curious i will post the site link to here and you can see where your effort has gone to, and should you wish provide positive and negative comments at your leasure.
