I need to pull a random word from a text file in my resource folder (visual Studio 2010) and then have a user enter a letter to see if it is in the word. Yes, Hangman game. There is more, but right now I need to pull from that text file for a start. I know what I have is not even close to right under "Get Word Button", but I'm kind of confused about the process.

I write an HTML file with MS Word, and use it on my application. The problem is that I need to close Word or Visual Studio in order to save the file, or compile the code, because each one reserves the file permission rights. The html file is only written by word, and only read from VS. At compile time, the file is copied to execution directory. Is there a way to give both programs simultaneous permission rights?

I don't understand how to save the user selected numbers, let the computer generate 6 random numbers, and match the two sets of numbers together to see how many matches there are. As far as I understand the numbers should be stored in 2 separate arrays and then matched together to find any matches.
VS 2008 crashed for about the 3rd time today. I had added several task list shortcuts and User tasks to my task list and they all disappeared. Where did they go? Doesn't VS save this stuff somewhere? If you close VS do you lose all your tasks that aren't in TODO comments?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to implement a Web User Control into one of my APSX pages but keep getting the following warning:
Element 'IntFilter' is not a known element. This can occur if there is a compilation error in the Web site, or the web.config file is missing.
The user control is defined in the same web project as the aspx page.
Question: How do I resolve this warning (I do not want to move the control to a separate project)? Also, what do I need to do to enable IntelliSense for this control so I can set its FilterTypeSelection property from ASPX?

Also of note, if you drag the control from the Solution Explorer to the page in Design view it will add the references you need (though it was still generating the warning for me). If you drag it to the page in source view it will add an a tag with a href to the element.

I have created a user control which is inside a folder called Controls and the class is a partial class which inherits from Web.UI.UserControl. Now from my page which is one level up I just try to access the method inside the usercontrol and so trying to cast it as the type of user control.
But I get build errors. It just cannot recognize that class. I get Type not defined error. But at times it has recognized the class. Dont know why it does that.
I had an Excel spreadsheet which I put in MS Access (database). I then took that database and used that as a source in VB to create a GUI for. In VB I have an input text box to search and pull of different fields. I created some queries for searches in from the text box. I have have a dataset view of the data which has the binding navigator (add, insert, save).
The problem I have is that when I hit the '+' for add to add information and then click the 'save' button in the binding Navigator, the information I put in does not save. I check this by exit out of the program run (debug to open the app) and then open it back up to search and/or check for the new information I put in. My overall goal is to create to publish the final code and use an a standalone program.
Also, as another option,(I would like to learn) Is there a way to map VB directly to an Excel file to have the user input information and save to the excel file.

I have an issue with Visual Studio's support for coloring User Types in VB.NET, I'm an C# developer that have been forced to code in Vb.NET by political rules in my organization, and I really misses the support for coloring user types in Vb.NET, I had hoped that this would be solved in Visual Studio 2010 and well in the beta they have added Vb.NET User Type coloring, but the coloring is the same for all user types I cant't have one color for interfaces and one for classes and so on.

Or, if there was a way to hard code it into the program as there is only 5 words that would be better.

So, I need to show the user the file, allow them to select a line to match and/or extract from. So they select the first line ready for a match, they then select a word/s to mark as a constant for matching, so in this case it would be: MyGroup A simple version for text match would be like "MyGroup *" Now, I need to convert this to regex dynamically (I assume its the best method), its not a one off, the data that is selected is all open and up to user selection. I am designing a fairly small application to manage a waiting area for a clinical department. There will be a receptionist who books appointments and updates exisiting appointments to say that a patient has "Arrived". In seperate rooms will be nurses who call patients who have "Arrived" and update the appointment as "In Session" and finally as "Discharged". The appointments are viewed in a flexgrid with nurses across the top and time down the left, patient names are displayed at the relevant times and the cells are shaded a colour to represent the current appointment status ("Booked", "Arrived", "In Session" and "Discharged").
I am using SQL Server as the back-end and Visual Basic 6 (I know) as my front-end.I have been told that there will be 2 or 3 nurses plus the receptionist logged in to the system but I would like to cater for growth.My question is what is the best mechanism to use in order to reflect the status change made by one user on the screens of the other users currently logged in?
I have been thinking about using a timer to refresh the data at a set interval but I do not want to keep hitting the server excessively (although what is considered excessive? we would be talking about a call for data every 60 secs per user). Plus the server could be serving data for many other applications so this is another consideration.Alternatively I have been thinking about sending some kind of message via Winsock to the other users notifying them of data changes as they happen. I don't have a lot of experience with this and am concerned about clients not receiving messages and users seeing old data. It also seems strange to me that once the days appointments have been retrieved from the database that "in theory" a client could go the whole day without having to query the database again to pick up changes - kind of scary.Some information on the data:We would probably be looking at around 100 appointments per day We capture patient name, date of birth, date and time of appointment and appointment status.What is the standard approach / best practice for this kind of scenario?

Will i be able to successfully install 2010 beta 2 side by side 2008? because i want to test 2010 features and some development toolkits such as silverlight while i don't want to uninstall my visual studio 2008 professional.

I have a Visual Basic project and when working and modifying code, the compiler will crash and then a message will say something like "Microsoft visual studio encountered a problem and was shut down." I've tried editing code from the solution and the project. Both produce the error. Usually occurs when adding an "IF...Then..." condition. May work for hours but then crash. Solution will compile and build.
View 3 RepliesI'm using VB.net 2005. I want to open a Word doc from either the VB app. It can either shown on the form or in Word itself. Either way is fine. I tried using the WebBrowser control method, but it had the annoying "Open or Save" dialog that pops up and I don't want the users to get that. So now I am trying by opening up Word uses the sample code I found below. The problem is I want the users to ONLY be able to READ the doc. No Editing, Printing, or Saving. How Do I remove the Menubars, tool bars, and anything else that would allow them to print or save. Even if they tried to edit it would then do them no good without print or save.

I'm trying to make a form that will read my wordlist. txt (one word or phrase per line) then using a timer, insert one word randomly selected from the list, and display it in textbox1 where it will remain until another timer changes the word. The word in the textbox will display for a random time 1min to 7 min, then the textbox displays another word randomly selected from the word list.
