Reading Binary File As Text And Manipulating It
Sep 29, 2010
I am doing some exercises on encrypting data. One of them are binary files. I am currently using triple DES to encrypt and decrypt the files both in VB.NET and C#... Now the thing is, once it is decrypted in VB.NET and saved, I can execute it again... But for some reason, my C# file is bigger! 20,4K where VB.NET one is 19,0. The C# file also is rendered unexecutable...Upon a closer look. The files appear almost exactly the same, but C# seems to add in a few extra bytes here and there in (seemingly) random places... I am currently using:
File.ReadAllText(String filepath, Encoding encoding); with UTF-8 encoding.

I'm new to VB and trying to figure out how I can replace a bit of descriptive text in a binary file. I presume its binary as I cant open it with anything but a hex editor. I've changed the text (file description) in the hex editor and saved it fine but I'm unsure how I go about saving just the section of information I need. I can work out the saving bit later. In the attached file you'll see the highlighted bit I want to edit. I need to replace the whole line or the file corrupt but I can fill it up with null characters and the numbers are just

I need to write data to a file, preferably in binary format, but I am unaccustomed with the concept. Where's the easiest place to get the basics? I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.
Here's what I know:
1. how to open a new file
2. how to specify the record length
3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?

few weeks ago i heard my teacher say that it is possible to view any file as a binary array (1s and 0s). if this is possible to do in visual basic please let me know how. Also how would i go about writing an array of binary to a file? For example 01100001 in a .txt file would produce "a"

I am fairly new to vb.net but was programming a long ime with vb6 I have a binary file that is a mixture of numbers (integers and doubles) and strings, such as "Programming with VB". I read the numbers using the BinaryStreamReader.ReadInt32 and BinaryStreamReader.ReadDouble, which are no problem

Here is my code for reading a Binary file:
Dim fs As New FileStream(filepath, FileMode.Open)
Dim str As String = ""
For d As Integer = 0 To l - 1
Dim byt As String = Hex(fs.ReadByte()).ToUpper
fs.Position = d
str+= byt
Next
str becomes:
20202CB962AC5975B964B7152D234B
But when I open the file in a HEX editor, it's:
202CB962AC59075B964B07152D234B70
Why are the 2 different?

I am attempting to read a series of double prcision float values (x,y,z coordinates) from a binary file using the binary reader. Everything works fine except that when I read the number back it is different then the number that was written there (original file is generated by mining application).
written number : 78897.6476586
file contents hex : 40 F3 43 1A 5C CF 43 A4 this converts back to the same number as written using a IEE 754 conversion program. VB returned value : -5.45100266729248E-134 using .readDouble()
I have tried to step thru the file in one byte steps to make sure that I have the proper start position but that did not help any.

I must search a binary string for a pattern. This worked fine in VB6 using Get to read a file into a string and using InStr to search for the pattern. The conversion from VB6 to VB.NET changed Get to FileGet and warned of new behavior, but I don't see anything in the FileGet documentation about not being able to read 0 value bytes.
I don't mind at all changing to a new method, but ultimately I must get the data into a string rather than an array.

How do I change bytes [text stored in those bytes] in a binary file?
I have a little function that read bytes 335-343 [For Keyer] and bytes 344-352 [for verifier] and displays it. These bytes store who the keyerID and VerifierID of a data entry file are. From time to time the Verifier Resumes the file [to insert new records], and his/her name gets stored in the KeyerID bytes. So if the original keyer had lots of errors, the new verifier now becomes the owner of this file and the errors are attributed to him/her [not fair]. He/She gets penalized when there are lots of errors.
My question to you is, how do I change the content of those bytes and save it to the file, without damaging any part of the file? I want to save 'H345' in those bytes, [H345 is an example of a Keyer/Verifier ID]
note - as of now I am using 010 Editor [binary editor]to manually change those bytes. When I use this editor, I can see the text portions for those bytes.[code]...

i am currently doing a project for my course. My project is creating a system for a mechanical workshop, this includes customer information, car information, expenditure ect. I am not allowed to use access to store the information as this will decrease my overall mark on difficulty hence i am going to use files to store the information. I am using VB 2005. I have tried with binary files, this was good at first as it stored data in a record but then when i tried to create a algorithm to search the data it failed.
1) Should i change my file from binary to text or another type?
2) Anyone have any ideas to search within a binary file? If you do can i get some code please.

I ran across my first unicode data, and I am not sure what to do with it. I read the unicode text from a binary file using the ReadBytes method, because ReadChars threw an exception when it tried it. Well, long story short, I have found a way to work with the data, I can convert it using a small Function I wrote, which goes something like this: [Code] And this works wonderfully. It just throws away anything not in the ASCII range, including the BOM at the start of the unicode data.
But I would guess that this method is not very universal and probably not the best way. Are there any VB functions available to do this sort of thing? I was able to find something called Text.Encoding, but there didn't seem to be a reverse of that not that I found anyhow. Any ideas?

I'm trying to make a program that can handle menu order in restaurant.
In this program, there are Main form (frmOrder), Starter Form (frmStarter), Entree Form (frmEntree), and Dessert Form (frmDessert). Each category (Starter, Entree, and Dessert) contains 4 menus, and each forms other than main form have label for name, price (label), and quantity (textbox).
Main Form have 4 buttons (3 of them opens respective form of Starters, Entrees, Desserts. Last button calculates total), and it has big label that displays all the ordered menu. By default it has current time and date, so any ordered menus are supposed to be displayed on separate line (with quantity, name, and price with dollar sign).
Below is the code I wrote for frmOrders
[Code]....
I tried to see it works, but lblTape.Text (which is the big label that displays ordered menu) do not change. I did saw lblTape.Text got value it supposed to (item quantity & item name & item price) but it doesn't change when I close form and return to Main form. I'm not sure where I got trouble to end up like this...

I've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.
(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this
If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....
And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.

I'm a little new to VB, and I'm in a class for it, but I'm trying to do something we aren't going to learn in the class (mostly out of sheer interest) and I need help. I'm trying to read lines from a text file into a listbox, each line representing a new item on the listbox. For example, if the text file reads: [code]I want to be able to take that as is and read it into a listbox, where those words would appear in the exact same fashion; as a list, each as separate items. I've looked at the Help stuff and learned (sorta) about delimiters... but the thing is I don't want to write my entire list in a continuous line separated by commas--I want it to keep reading each line, and moving on to the next, until there are no more lines left. I am thoroughly stumped, and would appreciate it SO much if someone could help. For a frame of reference, this is the point I'm at now with my code: [code]Note that when I run the program, all it will do is read the first line of text available and stop; once I press ENTER in a text file, it decides to stop reading.

Usually, the text file that would need to be read and processed would be local (on the computer the program is run), but for this example, we need to get the data from an online text file.
I have searched on google for nearly an hour now and haven't found anything of any real use. One of the earlier projects we submitted used a similar target, and I managed to get it working fine, however I dont have the original source code with me and I cannot remember how I did it.
I believe I used a Net.WebRequest method of some sort, because I had tried using StreamReader and ended up with an URI error or something like that.

I have just recently been using VB 2010 after using VB5. I have noticed a lot of changes. The problem I have is that I wish to open and save text files to and from arrays in the background. I've attached what I would do in VB5. I have searched around, but all the examples I find use a Textbox instead of an array. Can anyone show me how I can do this with VB 2010?
