Reading From Text File With Parser And Storing Into Arrays (VB)
Jun 13, 2011
I'm trying to read data from a text file with multiple records and fields separated by tabs to store into arrays, which I later want to output into a textbox on the form. The problem is that with the code I've written, when I debug it it exits the sub procedure when it enters the first loop where the parser is reading the text file. There are no error messages, it just exits? I'm not even sure if what I've written is possible. Here's what I've written so far:

Even a primer on just reading/writing to a text file would be golden. The array confuses me further, but understanding the data is primary.
Basically, we're writing a program to manage inventory for a bar. Fields and a few lines are below. The delimiter is "||"
So... How do we read the data into the arrays? NAME would be strName(), etc for all of them.
how to write and update existing data.
UID||BREWERY||NAME||SIZE||FORMAT||SEASONAL||PRICE||CASECOST||CASEQTY||BREWERYLOCATION||BREWSTYLE||ST YLE||ABV||CLASS
A0101.12B||Abita Brewing Company||Abita Amber||12

I'm currently making a program that will be used to practice German. It reads from textfiles that have English words (noted by # prefix) and German words (noted by $ prefix). An example of this:
#hello $hallo
#good $gut
#evening $abends
The way it currently works is it loads a text file, finds all # and splits to an array called "English" and finds all $ and splits it to an array called "German" What I want it to now do is feed the "English" entries into textboxes on the left, and "German" onto textboxes on the right so I can then match them out and make a sort of memory game out of it. Unfortunately, I don't know how I would loop an array through multiple textboxes. Conveniently, the textboxes on the left have even numbers, and the ones on the right have odd. Is there a way to possibly find all evenly numbered textboxes and loop "English" array entries into them, and the same for "German"? I've realised this has now gotten a little convoluted, but hopefully somebody understands. I can screenshot the form for better explanation, and copy my existing source code if anybody wants it.

I am trying to store 8 separate pieces of information in a text file (like a database) [but not a SQL database], consisting of integers and strings. How would I use an array to do this? Will an array collect data from text boxes (I also want to display the 8 pieces of information in separate boxes). also how would I save the text file so I can open it again or open a different text file (database?), from within the program?
EDIT: I see I need to use readline and writeline to read/write from a text file but how would I find specific data to show in my boxes?

My xml files were looking a bit clumsy when i read them, what i have done now is to save them in the xml in this format:
vb.net <field>{value1|its partner value2}</field>
i noticed {|} this is the format that vb.net uses for arrays, i was wondering if that's an ok way to store things, on retrieval once i get the node value, what would be the best way to break up the {value1|it's partner value2} variables to use, explode the | and get parts (0) and (1)?

I have an application that gathers data from a SQL database that is used by a 3rd party helpdesk application.My application is pulling out information of the number of hours worked by each engineer for the current and previous 2 months.Also as part of this process, my application works out the target hours for each of those months.
My application has 3 groupboxes whose label is generated at runtime. My application gives the Groupbox1.text the name of the current month, Groupbox2.text the name of the previous month, and Groupbox3.text the name of the month before that (e.g. Mar, Feb, Jan).
What I am trying to do is have 2 text boxes for each month where I can enter the number of engineer holidays taken and the number of public holidays if any. I want to store these values in an XML file, and I guess they need to be stored to match the Groupbox text (i.e. Mar, Feb, Jan).
When the application starts, I need to parse that XML file and re-populate the text boxes with those number of days - BUT if the month has moved on, so that the Groupboxes are now called Apr, Mar, Feb then I want the Mar and Feb data to be loaded, and I want the XML file to be updated so that Apr is added and Jan is removed from it.I want the XML file to keep the current and previous two months figures only.

I am trying to make this program that reads prices from a file and calculates the total for a certain amount of days and the total for all twelve days. It is for the 12 days o christmmas. The user selects which day(1-12) and the program calculates the total cost for that day and then the total cost for all 12 days. I need to make two separate arrays, one array to hold the twelve items and a second array to hold the twelve corresponding costs. The data needs to be read into the program one time. The arrays should be used to generate all output and calculate the costs. I have gotten the program working perfect, but I cant get it so the program only reads the txt file once.

So I'm in the final stages of finishing a program I've been working on for nearly a year now, and this is basically my final hurdle. The Save dialogue is working beautifully, with 'flags' in order to switch it over from the regular input into text boxes to the Listbox input protocol.
However, I'm having a *** of a time getting it to take lines from the text file and put them in the proper text box. Here is an example file:
Quote:
SHOWNAME
CALLNAME
BREED
[Code]....
So with the sample file I provided above, in the textbox named callNameText would appear "SHOWNAME", and so on and so forth. With this build, I get a NullReferenceException on the "Me.Controls(strboxNames(i)).Text() = strAllText(ati)" line.

I'm still doing upgrades on my program that i'm creating and i've run into a bump again. I'm currently using a multi-dimension array to store a name, email, password, email provider, and user name. These 5 values are stored, corresponding with the latter, meaning the array is build as: name 1....n user name 1....n user email 1....n user email provider 1....n password 1....n So my question is, how can i store this in My.Settings? To be clearer, i'll use code: My.Settings.Name = name My.Settings.UserName = userName etc..... My current set up for a first run is like so... My.Settings.Password = adminInfo(2, 0) My.Settings.UserName = admingInfo(1, 0) etc.

The scenario is:
1)A large 2 dimensional array (400,20)
2)The program needs to access particular chunks(for example (0,20) to (50,20)
3)The program will open multiple files and process each into it's own 2D array (400,20)
What I have right now is code capable of creating the array, but no way to store the array so that I can open a new file and process that data into another large array. Someone mentioned the generics List(of T) might be a good way to store each new array as you could use the Add function. I have done some research on the List(of T) class but I'm not totally convinced that is the way to go. I'm just looking for some direction as I've just started on .net this year.

SI have a form and on submit I need the following variables stored in array.
Dim OrderName, OrderNumber, OrderSize, OrderQuantity, OrderAddOn, OrderEachPrice, OrderTotal As String
So pretty much its an order a customer will be making and every time a new order is placed, a new array will be made.
Example:
OrderName = TextBox1.Text was Sean
OrderNumber = TextBox2.Text was 123456
OrderSize = TextBox3.Text was Large
OrderQuantity = TextBox4.Text was 2
OrderAddOn = TextBox5.Text was Pocket
OrderEachPrice = TextBox6.Text was 10
OrderTotal = TextBox7.Text was 20.00
On submit a new array would be created and would be something like this:
Dim ArrayName(,) As String = {{"Sean", "123456", "Large", "2", "Pocket", "10", "20.00"}}
BUT a new array has to be created each time the submit is clicked.

MSDN only discusses strings, images, audio, etc.. but does not cover text files.
I have a text file with about 6k lines of short strings, each on its own line, added to my project's resources and I'm trying to .add each line to a collection. I've tried about 7 or 8 things, not all using StreamReader, but I can't find documentation on this anywhere.
Here is the last thing I tried:
Dim JunkStrings As New Collection
Dim sr As StreamReader = New StreamReader(My.Resources.shorts)
Do While sr.Peek() >= 0
[Code].....
I just can't find the equivalent to this that reads lines from a text file out of my.resources.

Here is what I would like to do:
- Store string data from a 'sign in' form into a text file. This text file must be one that is saved even after the user exits the program. The text file must also be one that will stay with the program even after it is published (executable).
- Be able to write to/read from the file for purposes of displaying some or all of that data on a form.
I use an Application Setting to do this - of type 'Specialized String Collection'. I tried this, but for some reason I could not get it to work. It was a good idea, but I need to be able to SEE the data that has been saved, and with a setting it seems like that is not easily done. I've decided that I either need to use a simple text file or a 1-table database for this. I would prefer just a text file, but in either case, it needs to be part of the .exe when published.
I have added a text file to my project, but I am not sure if it will be "included" in the project when I publish it. The path of the file I've added is in 'My Documents', but in my code, I will have to specify the path in order to use Streamwriter. How will this affect the program when I publish it? I felt the need to make a new thread because on my last one we had been mainly talking about settings, and I've decided that isn't the best option for me.

I am having difficulty writing to cvs files. My application is a text parser that scans a txt file, removes punctuation, and then stores the individual words in another txt file for later analysis. My end aim is to process txt for semantic similarities. I'm very new to this so my code is very chunky But I'd really like to pull each sentence from txt file, put into an array, and then place each array item into a CSV file with commas between words. I am trying to retrieve a 'tag'(Is it called that?) from an XML webpage. Once I make a post request from my vb.net app it sends a command to my online webserver and redirects me to a page that has entries that change each time. The page that im redirected to that changes each time looks something like this:
<mainpage> <id>hello</id> <random>176</random> </mainpage>
What vb.net code would I use to retrieve the id (In this case 'hello') and store it in a variable.

I've been making a program whereby users names and numbers must be stored in external files. At the moment I can get the names to read and write to a file with these lines:
Imports System.IO
Public Class frmDefaultMenu
Private Sub frmDefaultMenu_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
[Code].....
Where each line has a name, a seaparator (,) and then the corresponding number.
When the program loads I would like it to be able to access that file, and store all the names into an array named ExistingUsers() and all the Numbers into an array called ExistingNumbers(), and then when a new name is added in the textbox, it is assigned the number "100" and placed at the end of the array, then when the application quits OR straight away, the external files are updated.

I have been trying to find out how to do this for days now, so I am finally asking how. I am newish to programming. Here is my problem.
I am trying to extract x,y,z coordinates from a text file arranged as such:
x,y,z
x,y,z
x,y,z
etc.
I need to be able to extract the x column into an array, the y into an array, and the z into an array. I learned how to pull it into a string, and how to split for every line, but i don't know how to split after each comma and separate them.
