Recursive Search For All Folders And Subfolders In System?
Mar 24, 2011
I wrote a Windows Forms script that searched for all non-hidden and non-readonly folders in my system. But the script itself, when run initially, runs for like 5 minutes. Subsequent opens take much less time. I was wondering if there is a logical error to it, so as to why its running so very slow.
Private Function FindSubFolders(ByVal dir As DirectoryInfo, ByVal node As TreeNode) As TreeNode
Dim subnode As New TreeNode
For Each folder As DirectoryInfo In dir.GetDirectories()

I have two folders at different locations but with the same name. A file is generated in one of the folders and it is to be copied to the other folder but without overwriting the existing contents in C#.File.Copy overwrites the contents which makes me lose the previous contents. Is it possible to merge the contents in the folder?

This is driving me crazzyy. I need a simple way to display all of the folders and subfolders of an FTP directory in a treeview, similar to the layout of Windows Explorer. Here's the code I have:

The code is total crap... causes my app to hang. Pretty sure infinite recursion is the cause.

I am currently using a recursive function to retrieve all the files/folders within a directory.Sometimes this takes a while. I am wondering if I am able to calculate the total number of files/folders within a directory before retrieving the filenames so that I can implement a progress bar?

When a cell in column A changes, run a macro that will search for a file at a certain folder path (including sub folders) containing what was entered into column A. It will then open that file, copy items into the rows beside where the information was entered. So far I cannot get the search for the file to open the workbook. Microsoft runtime script is included in the references.
Here is what I have so far. Which is not working except for the first sub.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change (By Val Target As Range)
If Target.Column = 1 Then
ActiveCell.Offset(-1,0).Select Then

I have a function that returns a value of the numbers of files, folders and subfolders in a directory. But i can't seem to handle the "UnauthorizedAccessException" which i get from certain read only files or folders. I tried to use both the DirectoryInfo.GetDirectories() and DirectoryInfo.GetFiles() methods. as you can see from the code below. This exception is thrown in start of the for each loop, so i'm not able to handel it with a try, Catch Ex As UnauthorizedAccessException to cintinue the loop.

I have a MyList (List Of Longs) in which I need the check a specific relation between any two members of that list, if the relation-check returns true I need to delete checked member.I was used to do something like that with 2 For Next Loops, is there a better way. Would it even work that way with Lists?What is happening when an Item is removed from the List that has not been called by the outer For-Next yet? [code]

I wrote this code. It works, but when the directory has a lot of subfolders it freezes up. I really only need to access the folders created in the last 24 hours. I cannot however figure out how to compare the subfolder to time.

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim di As New IO.DirectoryInfo("V:E72")

The functions will make a direcotry tree in my debug window, that looks something like this:

What I want it to do is to have it return an array of relitive file paths, from the starting direcotry I give the function. Then I will use a loop to cycle though each file in the array to make certain changes.
Something like this:

Any ideas on how to acomplish this?

I am currently using the Directory.GetFiles("Path of folder", "Specific Data") to search a folder for specific files and then do something with those files - this works perfectly. However i would like to search all sub folders within the top level folder also.I have seen ways to return what directories exist within the top level - which i could then use to search but was wondering if there is an easier way.

I am currently using the following to Get Path of all Open Explorer Windows:
foreach (SHDocVw.InternetExplorer j in new SHDocVw.ShellWindows()) {
if (j.Name == "Windows Explorer") {
ListView1.Items.Add(j.LocationURL);
}
}
But it doesn't return the location of special folders like Computer, Recycle Bin, Network etc. Is there a way to identify those folders so I can put the path on my own like shell:MyComputerFolder for Computer?

I have a directory structure as follows;
ad_folder
--folderA
--folderB
--folderC[code]....
at I do not know the number of or the names of the folders, they can be different in different cases, I only have the root path.how I can display folder contents in VB.net and the code worked but couldn't figure out how to create the arrays and display only folders within folders starting with "ad_".
System.IO.DirectoryInfo and System.IO.FileInfo to be used for getting the folders.A literal control can be used to create javascript arrays in ASP.NET. These js arrays can then be used on the client side.

I am trying to create a new folder in C:\Windows\System32\oobe but I cannot get sufficient privileges. Here is the bit of code that has the error
' I have "CreateDirectory("C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds") in the Form load sub
Sub CreateDirectory(ByVal Path As String)
Directory.CreateDirectory(Path)
End Sub
And then in Form Load I have:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
CreateDirectory("C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds")
End Sub
It keeps saying I don't have the privileges. Is there any way around this? I also need to put files in that folder later on.
