Referring To A Previously Existing DataSet?

Jul 21, 2011

I'm working on a very basic VB.net frontend for an Access database and have stumbled upon a problem.

Dim ds As DataSet
MaxRows = ds.Tables("Course_assignmentsDataSet.tblCourse").Rows.Count
i = 0
Private Sub Navigate()
txtCourseReference.Text = ds.Tables("Course_assignmentsDataSet.tblCourse").Rows(i).Item(1)
txtCourseName.Text = ds.Tables("Course_assignmentsDataSet.tblCourse").Rows(i).Item(2)
End Sub

I get the error that Object Reference is not set to an instance of an Object. I think this is because I haven't defined the DataSet as "Course_assignmentsDataSet"- the one I want to use- but I'm not sure how to do this.

Export DataSet To Existing Excel Worksheet

Nov 4, 2010

VB2005. I have several DataSets that I create or grab from an external source. One example is
Dim sql As String = "SELECT TOP 30 * FROM myTable" & vbCrLf & _
"WHERE Area='YY' AND CarNum='734EP' " & _
"ORDER BY ProcDate ASC;"
Dim da As New OleDbDataAdapter(sql, myOLEDBconn)
'create a dataset and fill it with the returned data.
Dim ds As New DataSet
da.Fill(ds, "MyData")

Once I have these DataSets I then have to pump them into a specific worksheet in an existing Excel2007 workbook. The connection and interaction with Excel and the workbook/worksheet is already established and that works. But I am stuck in exporting the DataSets
into the specific worksheet.

Note that I have already scoured the web and MS Community site and all code that I have found so far iterates through each and every row and column of the DataSet and then adds that to the worksheet in a cell by cell manner. This is fine and in testing that works. But there has got to be a better way to do this. For even a moderate sized DataSet the exporting just takes a long time. 25 records with 15 columns takes about 10 to 15 seconds.

I've also been experimenting with some scratch code I found that converts the DataSet to an ADODB Recordset and then uses the xlwksht.Cells.CopyFromRecordset function to export it in one fell swoop. I haven't got this one to work just right but it seems in the end it also does an iteration through each and every record and field to convert to the ADODB recordset.

Update Existing Records In A Dataset With An Unbound Datagridview?

Jan 1, 2011

What I am trying to do is update existing records in a dataset with an unbound datagridview. It updates just fine but I have added a simple backcolor change for errors. What I don't understand is it will update fine but throw the backcolor = red at the same time. Am I overlooking something here?

vb.net
For Each dr As DataRow In Form1.DbDataSet.Tables("tblInventory").Select() For Each row As DataGridViewRow In DataGridView1.Rows If row.Cells("colInventoryID").Value = vbEmpty Then 'Do Nothing Else If dr.Item("Inventory ID").ToString() = row.Cells("colInventoryID").Value.ToString() And

[code]....

I'm trying to get this working in a test application before adding it to my main project, so that's why the names of controls are the way they are.The errors I'm trying to show are if "Inventory ID", "Cart" and "Shelf" do not match. When they don't match it doesn't update, which is what it is supposed to do. However, if they do match they update just fine but also show the Inventory ID error. If I comment out that ElseIf for the Inventory, it throws the Cart error. It's like the ElseIf blocks get called even if the If statement is true...

Referring Between Classes?

Feb 21, 2010

I am trying to do is get interoperability between my "mainwindow" and a class. As far as I know the way to do this is to create an instance of the class (in "mainwindow") for example and then use that instance to call the functions etc... This works. However I want to allow the class to call functions in the "mainwindow" The moment I declare the instance on the class as well it goes into an endless loop.

Close Form By Referring To Name?

Feb 24, 2009

Im using a loop to open up a number of forms in my app. The forms are named after dates from a db. They are "created" at runtime so to speak.

Everytime a form is opened, the name adds to a dropdown list in an mdi parent form. The first item in that dropdown is a "close all". I want that item to do just that - close all the forms corresponding to the names in the dropdown list. Im thinking of looping with an integer, starting on 1 (since the "close all" is 0).

So I need something like:

forms(mdiparent.toolstripmenu.dropdownitems(i).close

Referring To A 2nd Imported Project, Within The Same Solution?

Jan 23, 2011

I Imported 2 programs that I made into one solution. I made a "BIG" main menu (new windows form), put two buttons. I code one button to open up the first project (that works fine). I code the other button to open the project I imported, however it says that the name is not declared. Am I doing something wrong?

here is my code for the "BIG" main menu:

[Code]...

now only the "Original name of first project" appears to be not declared, if I delete "Original name of first project", then "the project I imported"is not declared and so forth. Note: These are not the exact names I called my forms. I'm just trying to explain it clearer.

Use String As A Previously Created Object Instance?

Aug 9, 2009

Not sure exactly what I need to do to make this work, so my description may be lacking at first.Essentially I am writing a program launcher that recreates itself each time on load. It pulls the data regarding the tabs and buttons from an SQLite database and builds itself dynamically at run time. I get my problem when I pass the tab name through to the function that creates the buttons. I need the name to pull the right set of buttons from the database and I then tried to use the name to place the buttons on the right tab when I create them, but the debugger calls it a null reference because it doesn't point correctly to the tabpage that I'm trying to make it point to (at least that is what I'm guessing). Any ideas on how to make this work right?
