Renaming Folders In VB Using FILEIO.FileSystem.RenameDirectory

Mar 4, 2011

I have about 1200 files I need to rename in a current folder structure and am getting an error that NewName must be a name and NOT a relative or absolute path.

The deal is that I have this in a loop where it grabs a Patient# out of a text file and looks in that Patients electronic record for the existing directory on a server.

Sub Main()
Dim Lines = IO.File.ReadAllLines(PatList)
Dim BadFolder As String

Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.FileSystem Equivalence In C#?

Apr 6, 2011

I use VS 2008, .net 3.5, C# projects. I need do the same functionally like Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.File System.DeleteDirectory. Anyone says referencing the Microsoft.VisualBasic is often undesirable from within C#. Any association with VB from within C# code strikes me as undesirable. Using FileSystem class, this is a perfectly fine solution, but I prefer not references Microsoft.VisualBasic library. That one I would avoid.

Why Doesn't The DeleteDirectory Method Of The Computer.FileSystem Class Work On "special" Folders

Aug 14, 2008

if they choose to use a networked version of my software, I will need the main server doing the authenticating. This is a problem, because from what I understand, it is quite easy to clone MAC addresses. I have looked into using the CPU ID and the HDD ID, but those are not unique, well at least I don't think so. Reason why I say they are not unique is because someone has the exact same CPU ID as me, and the HDD ID changes from partition to partition (same drive). Maybe the HDD ID is a partition ID instead? Anyways, I was thinking maybe I could get the Physical serial number of both the HDD and CPU, but I have not been able to find anything yet.

Renaming Files - No Errors But Not Renaming Either

Feb 6, 2012

I have looked around the forums and found a few discussions on this, but none that address my issue.

I want to rename a folder of jpgs with their datetime original from the exif meta file. The line: My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile(foundImage, NewPictureName) does have the all the right info: the original file folder and name; and the new picture name - it just doesn't actually do the task.

Here's the sub:

If FolderBrowserDialog1.ShowDialog = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
lblSelPath.Text = FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath

System.IO.DirectoryInfo and System.IO.FileInfo to be used for getting the folders.A literal control can be used to create javascript arrays in ASP.NET. These js arrays can then be used on the client side.

C# - System.IO Versus VisualBasic.FileIO?

Aug 22, 2009

I typically develop in C# and am quite accustom to using System.IO. I recently ran across the FileIO library and have found that some of the advantages (such as sending an item to the recycle bin) are quite nice to have. Especially in the program I am currently working on.My question is, Does System.IO out perform the VisualBasic.FileIO?My program I am writing will be copying literally TB's worth of information onto server towers. I want to make sure I do not lose any time due to the library I am using.

I am using Microsoft.VisualBasic.Fileio.TextFieldParser to parse a CSV file that was created with Excel 2003. The parser is working great with the exception that it is converting extended ascii values to question marks! So if the file content was:

The TextFieldParser is returning

I have tried all of the encodings in the System.Text.Encoding package with no luck. I thought I had it with UTF7 but it was dropping other characters like replacing the + sign with a space.

Deployment :: Setup & Deployment - Copy/import 2 Folders And There Sub-files/folders Into S&d Project?

May 7, 2012

Have built a project and associated it with a Setup&Deployment Project. The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?

When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?

Storing Files In Database Vs Doing So In Filesystem?

Jan 30, 2009

I am in front of a great dilemma whether to store files in Database or doing it the standard way. I would choose the second option, but my application will be used by multiple users, so I am doing it by Web Services.

On the one hand, storing in database will be very useful as every user would have access to everything very fast, not caring about file paths, locations and so on.

On the other hand, if this table consists of 1000 files, wouldn't it be a bad idea as there should be some performance loss?

At the present moment, I am using mysql as database, but I am thinking of moving to SQL Server, but I suppose this is not DB Issue.

Bug In Renaming Program?

Oct 4, 2010

I'm trying to put together a simple file renaming tool which is an addon to another program. In the main program, the user loads file names into a list box then selects them and does certain things with the information. There is also a picturebox on the main program that will show a thumb of the file image. The renaming addon will go into that same folder and rename those files. When the original file names are in the list, the renamer program malfunctions on the filename(s) that are selected and or the file being shown as an image in a picture box in the original program. It's like a file sharing error, though that isn't what it says. It just refuses to rename a couple of the files and I assume that is what is happening. Is there any way to have the original program allow the renaming, then refresh the list? Or in the alternative, how can I get the original program to "let go" of the files so the user can rename those files without the hiccup, then possibly refresh the list with the new names?

Renaming A .net Project?

Apr 10, 2009

I made a vb.net project called "TestProject" and I set it to save in the directory "C:\Users\USER\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\TestProject" I want to rename my project to "CompletePC", along with the folders the project is stored in. so the name would now be "CompletePC" and it will save in "C:\Users\USER\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\CompletePC" I want the name of everything to be "CompletePC" ?So far I changed the assembly name and Root namespace to CompletePC in VB.NET and outside of VB.NET I made a new folder "CompletePC" and dragged every file into it and deleted the old "TestProject" folder, I then went into my project folder and changed the project name to CompletePC. I then deleted every file i could find with the name "TestProject" after previously saving and compiling the now named "CompletePC" in VB.NET. (saving and compiling should have made new files with the name "CompletePC" thus rendering any file with the name "TestProject" useless.

Renaming A Running Exe?

May 10, 2009

I'm trying to update an .exe using vb. The main app checks for an update, and if it finds one downloads it. Next it call another app, and quit. The 2nd app tryes to rename the 1st and rename the downloaded file to the name of the 1st. I'll explain in code... (app 1 and 2 have a manifest requiring administrator access UAC).

App 1: myApp.exe

- Check for update, if exist download it like myApp.ex_

- Then call App2 and exits.

App 2: update.exe

Threading.Thread.Sleep(6000)
Dim filename As String = "myApp"
'Delete myApp.old if exists

[Code]....

I could also determine that the problem isnt related to permitions, because i can from update.exe write files in c:program filesmyapp.

Is it possible that App 1 remains "connected" with update.exe, and update.exe cannot rename, delete ou move it?

.net - Computer.FileSystem.DeleteDirectory() With Read Only Files?

Sep 23, 2010

I recently came across a problem with My.Computer.FileSystem.DeleteDirectory(). It will not delete read only files.I found out by Googling that I could delete the read only files by changing the file attributes to 'Normal'. So I wrote a recursive function, as below.

Private Sub DeleteDir(ByVal dir As DirectoryInfo)

For Each d In dir.GetDirectories
DeleteDir(d)[code].....

It seems to work fine, but it would be nice if My.Computer.FileSystem.DeleteDirectory() had another parameter to delete read only files, or there was an easier way to do this.
