I typically develop in C# and am quite accustom to using System.IO. I recently ran across the FileIO library and have found that some of the advantages (such as sending an item to the recycle bin) are quite nice to have. Especially in the program I am currently working on.My question is, Does System.IO out perform the VisualBasic.FileIO?My program I am writing will be copying literally TB's worth of information onto server towers. I want to make sure I do not lose any time due to the library I am using.
I use VS 2008, .net 3.5, C# projects. I need do the same functionally like Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.File System.DeleteDirectory. Anyone says referencing the Microsoft.VisualBasic is often undesirable from within C#. Any association with VB from within C# code strikes me as undesirable. Using FileSystem class, this is a perfectly fine solution, but I prefer not references Microsoft.VisualBasic library. That one I would avoid.
I am using Microsoft.VisualBasic.Fileio.TextFieldParser to parse a CSV file that was created with Excel 2003. The parser is working great with the exception that it is converting extended ascii values to question marks! So if the file content was:
± 3 The TextFieldParser is returning ? 3
I have tried all of the encodings in the System.Text.Encoding package with no luck. I thought I had it with UTF7 but it was dropping other characters like replacing the + sign with a space.
I recently discovered that the standard System.Boolean value is actually 32 bits - this seems pretty "far out there" since it's only ever going to be 1 or 0 - I found this information in somebody's blog which contained 3rd-party documentation on the System.Collections.BitArray. According to this blog, the individual Boolean is 32 bits while the individual index entry in a BitArray is actually just 1 bit - official documentation here at
MSDN indicates that in reality, the BitArray is just an array of Boolean Values (which would be the same size as any other boolean) that provides methods and functions useful in deconstructing System.Byte values into the BitArray and reconstructing the BitArray back into a System.Byte (same with System.Byte()).
I'd rather not go through a lot of code to restructure Boolean Arrays into BitArrays unless there's going to be some genuine memory-use improvement (which I'd expect to see if I converted large Boolean arrays - at 32 bits per index - into large BitArrays at 1 bit per index). I'm also interested to know if the Boolean is actually a 32 bit monstrosity.

I seemed to have have ruined my settings on VS 2010... I can't get the Shapes to work just after I had fixed the problem with the PowerPacks, and then it deleted all of my shapes I had on my form after I was tweaking the code and added another shape. And ever since, the shapes make errors and I can't change there colors. I've tried reinstalling VS 2010, and changing refferences doesn't work anymore. I have a large project where we have 2-3 dll projects that are converted from VB6 to VB.NET. We have fixed all the issues that caused compilation errors, and most of obvious issues in running, so now we have basically a program up and running. The exe is created from scratch in VB.NET, using a lot of functionality from the converted dll's (including GUI forms). What I wonder is when I run the program in debug mode, I get a bunch of warnings in the "Immediate Window" saying:

...and some of other type (but most of them in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll).I was wondering if this is common in projects converted from VB6, or if it is caused by bad design in our code...

I agree that for domain model code that using the "traditional" unit testing approach makes the most sense as this would lead to a design that is easiest to maintain. However, for code that deals with the .net implementation of Windows API related stuff (file system, services, etc), is there really an advantage to going thru the extra work to get "traditionally" testable code?
It's hard for me to see the disadvantages of using Microsoft Moles for things such as ServiceController (or the File object). I really don't see any advantage of doing the traditional approach in this case.

I have about 1200 files I need to rename in a current folder structure and am getting an error that NewName must be a name and NOT a relative or absolute path.

how it might be possible to only request the FileIO permission for the data directory created by clickonce? I want to run my clickonce exe from the web, but I only want to request the IO permission for the data directory where I am storing some user files. Unfortunately, I don't know the directory when I build the project.
I am trying to use Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser for parsing any format of tab delimited text file that user may have and show the data in web page in tabular fashion.I have sample tsv file with text qualifiers such as quotes saved in different encoding styles for different platforms such as pc, unix, mac saved using textpad. and I am trying to parse these using TextFieldParser. It works for all PC files but fails for mac.
I've given a VisualBasic Software, written in VB5. Now the whole thing should run under Windows 7, so it needs to be converted to VB8 or VB9. It seems that most of the API of VB changed a lot in these years, so for me it seems quite impossible to run just a few code upgrades and everything is fine...

I'm developing a new SOA system right now, and would like to use WSDL2.0, but I heard some clients are still connect using VisualBasic and WSDL1.1 (mostly from excel sheets and stuff). So I was wondering if VisualBasic also supports WSDL2.0, or if it's all 1.1
I know WSDL2.0 will work with C#,Java,and most other typical application programming languages, and these languages will be used by most of our clients, but I don't want to alienate our VB users, so that's why I'm asking.
