Aug 29, 2011How on specific behaviour can be created in a custom class. I want to be able to create a custom class (a kind of list) where I can access the items by their index (this is the easy part), but also by a string that would describe them. Here is an example:
MyClass(1).SomeProperty = "NewValue"
MyClass("Item1").SomeProperty = "NewValue"
You can see this kind of behaviour in dataset for example where you can select a table by its name or by its index like this :
DataSet.Tables("MyTable").Rows...
DataSet.Tables(1).Rows...

As noted in my comment to Jon Skeet, this construct, along with the rest of the Object's components, executes 100,000 times in a profiling loop in ~570ms (rough average of 3-5 runs).
Exchanging the above construct out with a smaller Array.IndexOf construct loops 100,000 times in ~630ms (again, 3-5 runs, rough average, the whole Object). The new construct looks like this:

Apr 1, 2009I have been searching for a while now, but I still can't seem to figure this out. I wrote a rather large program, and to make things more efficient I started to create structs to store more info in a variable.All was well replacing my old code with new code, till I reached a certain point and found that blindly using a loop of integers to access the indexes of the array wouldn't work anymore... I need to access a specific struct by the information contained in a single variable within the struct (like a hashtable key), but can't seem to figure out how.
Is it possible for me to go through my array indexes in a fashion like this?:

Jul 28, 2009What would be the simplest way to find the n-th position of delimiter in a string.For example, say, I have a string variable called FullFilePath that contains the path of a file, like, C:SourceFiles<mthyr><subject><filename>.txt From this, I would like to extract out mthyr, subject, and filename, using the delimiter, "".
I was hoping string.IndexOf would let me find the n-th position of the delimiter "", in which case I can use the result to do a string.Substring. But it looks like IndexOf only finds the first occurence of a certain string, which means I would have to interate this somehow to look for the n-th occurence.
Or is there another method that will help me do this more efficiently.

Oct 11, 2009I have a string with 60000+ characters. I look for informations inside the string in a sequentially order. Every time I found a information I delete whatever is behind that information. In other words I reduce the size of the string every time I find something, and I do this using IndexOf and Remove, much like this:
vb.net Str = Str.Remove(0, Str.IndexOf("MyInfo"))
This can be quite heavy on the processor. So my question is it faster to look the informations using Regex or it would be about the same?

Now when I replace the Rows(index) with a Rows(6) I get the results that I want. I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. C# - Finding The Index Of Characters In A String?
Oct 22, 2010I have a text file that is automatically generated by an older computer system daily. Unfortunately, the columns in this file are not delimited and they are not exactly fixed width (each day the width of each column could change depending on the amount of chars of the data in each column). The file does have column headings, so I want to find the width of each column using the column headings. Here is an example of the column heading row:
JOB_NO[variable amount of white space chars]FILE_NAME[variable amount of ws chars]PROJECT_CODE[variable amount of ws chars][carriage return]
What I want to do is get the index of of the first char in a column and the index of the last white space of a column (from the column heading). I would want to get the index of the "J" in JOB_NUM and the last white space before the "F" in FILE_NAME for the first column.I guess I should also mention that the columns may not always be in the same order from day to day but they will have the same header names. I know I can use the string.indexOf("JOB_NO") to get the index of the start of the column, but how do I get the index of the last white space in each column? (or last whitespace before the next first non-whitespace that denotes the start of the next column)
