How do I use the Indexof Method to search for an Index a number? The number will be different on each line of the file. Each array has a name and a different zip code. I want to tell it to search for the first number in the line. Everything before that index will be first name, last name, and then zip code.

How on specific behaviour can be created in a custom class. I want to be able to create a custom class (a kind of list) where I can access the items by their index (this is the easy part), but also by a string that would describe them. Here is an example:
MyClass(1).SomeProperty = "NewValue"
MyClass("Item1").SomeProperty = "NewValue"
You can see this kind of behaviour in dataset for example where you can select a table by its name or by its index like this :
DataSet.Tables("MyTable").Rows...
DataSet.Tables(1).Rows...
How can I create a custom class that will behave like this?

Given an enum similar to this:
Friend Enum TestValue As Int32
tstNotSet = -1
tstA = 0
[code]....
As noted in my comment to Jon Skeet, this construct, along with the rest of the Object's components, executes 100,000 times in a profiling loop in ~570ms (rough average of 3-5 runs).
Exchanging the above construct out with a smaller Array.IndexOf construct loops 100,000 times in ~630ms (again, 3-5 runs, rough average, the whole Object). The new construct looks like this:
Dim p As Int32
p = Array.IndexOf(TestValues, s)
If p <> tstNotSet Then

I have been searching for a while now, but I still can't seem to figure this out. I wrote a rather large program, and to make things more efficient I started to create structs to store more info in a variable.All was well replacing my old code with new code, till I reached a certain point and found that blindly using a loop of integers to access the indexes of the array wouldn't work anymore... I need to access a specific struct by the information contained in a single variable within the struct (like a hashtable key), but can't seem to figure out how.
Is it possible for me to go through my array indexes in a fashion like this?:
Dim myArray(TableCount) As myStruct
Dim TableName As String = "SomeTable"
[code].....

I created a STRING SEARCH function in C/C++ - and I'm trying to use it in a multi-threaded situation in VB. I started this problem in a thread in the C/C++ section of the forum - here [URL] my last post shows me getting this error trying to call the function. Ran the code - got to that point - and in the immediate window I did

How would I find the index of an item in the a string array following code:
Dim arrayofitems() as String
Dim itemindex as UInteger
itemindex = arrayofitems.IndexOf("item test")
Dim itemname as String = arrayofitems(itemindex)
I'd like to know how I would find the index of an item in a string array. (All of the items are lowercase, so case shouldn't matter.)

What would be the simplest way to find the n-th position of delimiter in a string.For example, say, I have a string variable called FullFilePath that contains the path of a file, like, C:SourceFiles<mthyr><subject><filename>.txt From this, I would like to extract out mthyr, subject, and filename, using the delimiter, "".
I was hoping string.IndexOf would let me find the n-th position of the delimiter "", in which case I can use the result to do a string.Substring. But it looks like IndexOf only finds the first occurence of a certain string, which means I would have to interate this somehow to look for the n-th occurence.
Or is there another method that will help me do this more efficiently.

I have a string with 60000+ characters. I look for informations inside the string in a sequentially order. Every time I found a information I delete whatever is behind that information. In other words I reduce the size of the string every time I find something, and I do this using IndexOf and Remove, much like this:
vb.net Str = Str.Remove(0, Str.IndexOf("MyInfo"))
This can be quite heavy on the processor. So my question is it faster to look the informations using Regex or it would be about the same?

getting started with creating an index search for parallel arrays. When the user enters the specific "code", and presses enter, the information in the other arrays should be displayed based on its matching index. I'm pretty sure I use "For i = " but I'm lost. I have my arrays set up like this:
Dim code(9) As String
code(0) = "A"
code(1) = "H"

I have the following code:
indexOfSearchText = TextBox1.Find(item, start, TextBox1.TextLength, RichTextBoxFinds.WholeWord)
If indexOfSearchText <> -1 Then
startindex = indexOfSearchText
End If
But I want just the first result, if I have an example text:
then it searches twice "is", I just want the first "is".

I am trying to do a search on a index/row number taken from a dataview i.e. I enter 379437 in the input box which I know has a index/row number of 6. Now when I replace the Rows(index) with a Rows(6) I get the results that I want. When I run the code below the index comes out as 75 which displays the first row from the dataset which is a completely different set of results.

I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort.Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same.For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.
EDIT from OP's comments:I started simple with the non custom comparer but I am getting an error: expression does not produce a value. Not sure what I am doing wrong.Here is the code:
Public Shared Function SortListOfStringArray(ByVal ListOfStringArray As List(Of String()), ByVal SortByIndex As Integer) As List(Of String())
Return ListOfStringArray.Sort(Function(x, y) x(SortByIndex).CompareTo(y(SortByIndex)))
End Function

I have written a program that uses an array of the english alphabet and Morse code. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. Do i need to Parse the string of characters one at a time, and then run it through a loop like i have created?

In the past I had the indexing service installed on a Windows Server 2003 and used it to index files for my website. I did this by executing an OleDbCommand with a query and a connection string.How do I accomplish the same thing with the new "Windows Search Service" (Windows Server 2008) by using VB.NET? Does this work the same way so that I only need to change the Provider name which has been "MSIDXS.1" up to now? Case true, what is the new Provider name?

I am getting an error message on line 6 of the VB.Net code at min(i). The error message reads:

AL.item(0) = "This is a brown fox."

Is there an easy way to search "cat" in the arrayList and index 1 will be returned?

I have a non standard text file, ie its not delimted etc, its pretty much free flowing. What I want to do is to search for a specifc string eg. "xyz123" and then replace it with what a user types into a text box, lets call the text box and its contents "txtreplace".
I am trying to replicate a find and replace function essentially, but will need to tailor it later on down the line, but this will be a starting point.

I have a text file that is automatically generated by an older computer system daily. Unfortunately, the columns in this file are not delimited and they are not exactly fixed width (each day the width of each column could change depending on the amount of chars of the data in each column). The file does have column headings, so I want to find the width of each column using the column headings. Here is an example of the column heading row:
JOB_NO[variable amount of white space chars]FILE_NAME[variable amount of ws chars]PROJECT_CODE[variable amount of ws chars][carriage return]
What I want to do is get the index of of the first char in a column and the index of the last white space of a column (from the column heading). I would want to get the index of the "J" in JOB_NUM and the last white space before the "F" in FILE_NAME for the first column.I guess I should also mention that the columns may not always be in the same order from day to day but they will have the same header names. I know I can use the string.indexOf("JOB_NO") to get the index of the start of the column, but how do I get the index of the last white space in each column? (or last whitespace before the next first non-whitespace that denotes the start of the next column)
