Oct 7, 2011My assignment in Visual Basic 2010 is to build a order form that has two text boxes, one for the name and the other for the address. And we're suppose to use the IndexOf method on the address. I understand that IndexOf returns the position of a character and the number of characters. What would be the purpose of using the IndexOf method on the address in this instance? I don't understand what I would be searching for when the user types in it's address that's going to be numbers and string characters. I think I understand what the IndexOf method does, somewhat, but why and what would I use it to achieve?

May 4, 2009I would like to format output to a property of a custom control I have made.For instance I have a literal control in my control and when populated I want to check if it is longer than 30 characters long, if so, then go to the next space (as to not cut the word off) after the 30th character and place a <br /> tag in to place the next 30 characters on the next line.So if there were 100 characters in a string, there would be 3 line breaks in the label.I have the looping worked out to get the label populated but cannot get how to dymaically create the array based on the string lenth property and index of method.

Mar 24, 2010I need to find a method of looping through a listbox and retrieving the index number and values - quite straightforward in asp, but turning out to be something of a nightmare in winforms!Here is the scenario - The user can add values in a textbox, that are in turn added to a DataTable that gives it a unique ID and a row number, this is then bound to the listbox. The user can then move the items up or down the list by adjusting the row number in the datatable and rebinding to the listbox..
The problem that I am hitting is when the user needs to delete an item -the first part is easy - delete from the DataTable and rebind to the listbox. The bit where I hit the proverbial brick wall is needing to loop through the listbox rows and getting both the index number and the ValueMember - that way I can change the row numbers in the DataTable based on the index number against the ID number.

Mar 14, 2011I'm building a program in which it asks for your name and age and determines a ticket price based upon these details. I want it to show the person's name, then their age, (jump down a line) then their ticket price, and then it jumps down a line to show the next person's name, age and ticket price. Issue is, when it's meant to jump down to show the next person, it just completely deletes the last person's details.I'm using this line of code:
TxtFareShow.Text = (Name & Age & vbCrLf & Price) & vbCrLf
How do I fix this?

I have this problem that I'm going in circles on. The error message is "no accessible IndexOf can be called with these arguments."
My professor said that "to search for the string Los Angeles and substring will return it from the textbox, but it needs to know what position to start returning a word at, and that is where the IndexOf comes in." I needed a way to show a property box of an object represented by the selected node on the treeview. So, I gave each of my objects a NodeIndex property, in which I would store the treeview.indexof(node) result, as shown below:

Jul 28, 2009What would be the simplest way to find the n-th position of delimiter in a string.For example, say, I have a string variable called FullFilePath that contains the path of a file, like, C:SourceFiles<mthyr><subject><filename>.txt From this, I would like to extract out mthyr, subject, and filename, using the delimiter, "".
I was hoping string.IndexOf would let me find the n-th position of the delimiter "", in which case I can use the result to do a string.Substring. But it looks like IndexOf only finds the first occurence of a certain string, which means I would have to interate this somehow to look for the n-th occurence.
Or is there another method that will help me do this more efficiently.

Oct 11, 2009I have a string with 60000+ characters. I look for informations inside the string in a sequentially order. Every time I found a information I delete whatever is behind that information. In other words I reduce the size of the string every time I find something, and I do this using IndexOf and Remove, much like this:
vb.net Str = Str.Remove(0, Str.IndexOf("MyInfo"))
This can be quite heavy on the processor. So my question is it faster to look the informations using Regex or it would be about the same?

Mar 15, 2012I have loaded a list of values from a mysql database into a CheckedListBox and want to be able to select them to eb used in a query. The CheckedListBox shows the data as table_name.attribute_name, and when an item is selected I try to break up the two values by using a substring, like this:

May 20, 2012I'm having trouble with a more complex program, so I've created a simple program to highlight my issue (see code block below). When I declare a Collection generically (like I have below) and try to call IndexOf, I get the following compiler error:
'IndexOf' is not a member of 'Microsoft.VisualBasic.Collection'. (BC30456)
If I instead declare my Collection as a collection of strings (Public mycollection As New Collection(Of String)), I then have access to the usual methods, but the .Add method then only allows a single string to be passed to it. This means that I can't use a key, which seems to be the point of a collection. Is there any way to have a general, keyed collection that can use IndexOf?
