Separate Resources From Main Executable?

May 25, 2011

I have created a windows forms application with a lof of images and icons. The main .exe file is getting rather large. About 15mb. I assume it is because all of these images and icons. I use a .resx file to hold the images/icons.

Can I seperate the resource file from the main executable? Into a DLL or something?

I use an auto update program and would like to prevent the user downloading the whole 15mb .exe each time.

2008 : Can VS Copy The Executable To A Separate Directory

Dec 18, 2009

VS sets your project up with the default directory structure: ...indebug which also seems to contain some other files besides your dll (I assume these are related to the debug symbols, etc).So how do you set it up to copy your dll to another directory when debugging?Right now, I'm having to manually copy the built dll with every run and that's getting to be a bit annoying.I'm using VS 2008?

Embedding DLL Resources Into Executable (No More ILmerge)?

Feb 25, 2011

I've used ILMerge in the past when I needed to include the DLL's my assemblies depended on and only have to distribute a single exe file.Jeffrey Richter recently posted some c# code that allows you to embed the DLL's and load them from a byte array as embedded resources.[URL]Here's the code sample he gives(in c#), I'm just not sure how to handle the event in VB.net since among many things the sub main is semi hidden and my lack of the appdomain knowledge

AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve += (sender, args) => {
String resourceName = "AssemblyLoadingAndReflection." +
new AssemblyName(args.Name).Name + ".dll";

Msbuild - Modify The AssemblyInfo.vb File Of The Main Executable?

Jan 6, 2011

I currently have a nightly build system running as a windows scheduled task, calling at batch file, that works sort of like this: Check out the latest revision from subversion Modify the AssemblyInfo.vb file of the main executable and the librarys to set the version number to 0.0.0.revision Invoke MSBuild to build everything (including the installer) Upload the installer and a log of the build to an FTP server This works ok, but step 2 is dirty and fragile, and I can't imagine that this the only way to do what I want. Any ideas?

Using Resource Expressions With The Resources In A Separate Project?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm pretty sure this is something super easy, but how do i access a resource that is in a separate project using the expression syntax?I thought it would be like so:

<%$ Resources:SomeNamespace.Resources.Web, PleaseSelectAnImage %>

where SomeNamespace.Resources is the project that the resources are located in.

i normally just do <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%> but i need to have this inside a control. <kw:SlickUpload ID="SlickUpload1" runat="server"
ValidExtensions=".png, .gif, .jpg"
InvalidExtensionMessage="<%$ Resources:SomeNamespace.Resources.Resources.Web, PleaseSelectAnImage %>" >

so when i just do what i normally do, it puts <%= SomeNamespace.Resources.Web.PleaseSelectAnImage%>" literally.my project name is SomeNamespace.Resources. the resource file name is Web. and the key is PleaseSelectAnImage.

Load The Main Form Of A WPF So That A Separate Thread Goes And Gets Data From The Database While The Form Is In An Apartmentstate?

May 15, 2012

How do i load the Main form of a WPF so that a seperate thread goes and gets data from the database while the form is in an apartmentstate? (drag-able / movable) I Know this is possible with opening a new window from your main form like this :

Private Sub openOrderWindow()
Dim OrderWindow As Orders = New Orders
OrderWindow.ShowDialog()
End Sub

[code]....

I've tried putting MyBase.ShowDialog() and .Show() and .9000+ other things The only benefit I've got out of using a seperate thread to load from the databse is i can see the screen right away (as oppose to it being a transparent box until it loads) but i cannot move it around or minimize it?is there any way to make it Movable while it loads?

Run A Method On The Main Thread From A Separate Thread?

Dec 31, 2010

I'm reading data from a serial port, but the DataReceived event of SerialPort is handled on it's own thread. I want to handle this on the main thread, but simply declaring an event and raising it still results in it being processed on the SerialPort thread. I'm assuming I need to declare a delegate I can call, but I don't see how that would work.

For example, I want to call Sub HandleDataReceived() on the main thread from the DataReceived thread, having HandleDataReceived() run on the main thread. How would I do this?

Deployment :: Can An Executable Program Create An Executable File

May 17, 2012

I have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.

So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time.How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?

Executable On Vista - Open The Executable It Goes To A "WindowsApplication1?

I have an executable that I was able to get working on all XP machines by registering all the .dll's associated with it.On Vista, however, I go through the exact same registration process but right when I open the executable it goes to a "WindowsApplication1 has stopped working" dialog. I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

String Manipulation - Separate Three Fields Of The Phone Number And Display In Three Separate Text Boxes?

I created a telephone number form where the user enters the telephone number in a text box as (nnn) nnn-nnnn. The first 3 digits in parenthesis are the ISD code, the next three are the area code and the last four are the local number. I need to separate out these three fields of the phone number and display in three separate text boxes labeled appropriately. Now, suppose the user enters the phone number in a text box as a continuous string of 10 digits, where the first three represent the ISD code, the next three represent the area code and the last four represent the local number. Create Separate Object Instances For New Objects In Separate TabPages?

Sep 17, 2010

I have a TabControl object on my form with many tabs created in code (TabPages) and my problem is that the same objects that are in the initial TabPage needs to be in the other TabPages created in code, I have this done in code when the user clicks the 'New Tab' menu option, however the same code is used for any new tabs created. The problem created here is that I have an event against one of the objects that appear in the other TabPages, but because the same code is used to create any new tab pages, the event will only work on the newest tab page, if that makes sense? By the way these objects that appear on the other TabPages are properties at the top so events can be handled against them in the respective subroutine.

Possible To Have Separate Combo Boxes That Will Give Separate ID Values But Using Same Table?

Apr 30, 2010

I'll get straight to my problem - I'm currently coding in Visual Studio.I have a table (countries) with the columns ID | Name. The table is filled with around 28 records.I also have a form with 4 combo boxes (set up as 1,2,3 & 4) that I want the user to select. These combo boxes will display the names from the table countries. I then want to use the selected names in the combo boxes to Insert into their corresponding ID into another table. For example England would have the ID 1, USA the ID 2 etc.So, is it possible to have separate combo boxes that will give separate ID values but using the same table? At the moment I can't seem to find a solution.Eventually the form will have more than 4 combo boxes so I don't want to use separate bindingsources for each combo box.

Generate Executable From An Executable?

For example lets say I have a form with a textbox and in that textbox we pass an argument which is for example the serial of the product, then we have a button which once clicked will generate an executable on the fly which has also a textbox requiring that serial to run? That was only an example but the main thing is how to generate that exe on the fly.

.net - Cant Run Executable On .Net Framework 2.0?

Jun 4, 2011

My problem is simple I have my application which was perfectly executing under framework 2.0, but recently I upgraded my code to add few lines.

ServicePointManager.DnsRefreshTimeout = 500
ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 100
ServicePointManager.EnableDnsRoundRobin = False
ServicePointManager.MaxServicePointIdleTime = 1000
ServicePointManager.SetTcpKeepAlive(False, 500, 500)

Now when I comment these, the application is executed flawlessly, but when included program requires Framework 2.0 SP2 upgrade, I searched MSDN for this but looks like this is available from Framework 1.1

I dont want my users to upgrage to SP2 for such minor things but cant also remove this from my code, Is there an alternate to achieve similar ServicePointManager settings without a Framework Upgrade?

IDE :: Get Executable Running?

Jan 13, 2011

Firstly I'm not a programmer and do not pretend to be one. I just enjoy killing some spare time I've been usining Visual Basic (started with VS2005 and now onto VS2010) to develop a program. Up until now I've been happy to plod along running the progam from the development environment. However, I recently was asked by an colleague if they could have a copy of the program to use.Therefore I opted to create an executable file for him to use. The problem is that whislt the executable file runs fine on my machine (Win 7) where VS2010 is installed, it does not deploy correctly on his machine (XP pro). Following is the message that I get:See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.
