I have a application that requires access to a tablet, the tablet in order for it transfer data accurately needs to be calibrated from time to time. Users have expressed intrest that once calibration has been done and has been validated to be correct that those new settings be ready for use in the main application. However, the only way I have been able to do this is to physically re-start the application. I have not had any luck with My.Settings.reload(). The settings I can confirm have changed but the application after saving them and calling the reload do not reload them. Am I doing something wrong? Does reload only work under certain conditions?
I have a setting labeled "Names" and in the program I can create a new "Names" value, which works fine. But, I want to be able to automatically save to this new "Names" and retrieve information from the value without having to close the program and reopen it in order to have the new setting saved. Is there a way to do this? I tried using the Me.Refresh() command, but it didn't do the trick.
I am am having some problems with using My.Settings. I have saved some strings with My.Settings.Save() and am trying to set the strings back to its default value. I have tried using My.Settings.Reload() but it does not do anything. What is the best way to set the strings back to its default value that I have set it to? I have looked around for this question but could not understand what to do to fix the problem. I have gone to msdn.microsoft.com but could not find any good information, only this[URL]..
I am trying to introduce "user.config" corruption handler in my application. The approach I am following is that when the first time my application access user setting variables, I put that in try catch block and if the file found corrupted i simple delete it and reload setting variables. but I dont know why reload functionality is not working properly. What my understanding about reload is that it will reload all user setting variables to its default value, but in my case even after reload() everytime appliction access user setting it generates exception. My code snippet is as follows:
Try test = My.Settings.Mysetting Catch ex As Configuration.ConfigurationException
I can double click on the Setting.settings and the projects Settings grid appears in design. I change the value of a user scope setting yet when I run the application in debug it picks up a value I set initially instead of the current value of the setting.
When the app starts I set a connection string to the path of the .SDF file that I set in the Settings.settings grid and accesss it with
mRootSDFPath As String = My.Settings.SDFConnectionString
I don't even know where to begin describing this. I have a project, that uses settings, for some paths, settings that I retrieve with the My.Settings. function. In my laptop, when I change the .exe.config file, the settings are updated accordingly, but when I try that on the production server, it just shows the default value used while compiling.
I tried changing the solution configurations to debug and other custom configs with no effect.Tried to use the same folder copied and pasted without version control, still the same result.Tried a co-workers laptop, by using the last svn revision, it works there too. But on neither of the servers works.
I have some System.Collections.Specialized.StringCollection 's in my.settings and the won't do anything: I have tried adding things to them and I get a null reference, now I have used these before and they worked fine I have tried reading from them, like I have in the past, and it dosen't read anything; the strings come out emtey as in one emtey string when there is three full strings
So, I've created a form that allows for the user to save his or her settings after closing it. When using Visual Basics to run the program, there is no problem and it works wonders. Here is the problem. When I run the program not in Visual Basics, when I go to open the form, it fails. At first, it was because I didn't update the configuration file to include the new settings. Which was dumb, of course, but I updated the file and made sure to put it with the program.

However, when I opened the program again, it failed. So, I tried putting an error message in the form so I know why it failed. This time, it would come back saying "Error Occurred. The Following Error Occurred:" and that is it. No details at all why it was having any problems reading my new user settings. Once again, the user settings work fine in visual studios. It has the updated configuration file in the same place it is.
... the value remained the same, unchanged.1 thing though, my app is started via Sub Main() in module file, instead of "Enable application framework". Does this affect the saving of Settings file?
I am using VB.NET 2005 and running non embedded crystal reports from the SQL server and have following variables database name, server name, user name and password in the application settings editor and given the default values.
I have created a form that allows these settings to be changed by the user and the probem that I am having is that, the reports are still running with incorrect credentials. The following code runs when the user modifes the values and clicks OK button
I am a beginner using 2008 Express and I am trying to get my application to remember and restore some combobox values. It seems to work fine if the application is opened and closed normally but for some reason it loses the settings if it is opened from the startup folder.
Here is how the startup link is formed:
Dim shortcutFile As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Startup) & "FBNav.lnk" If Not IO.File.Exists(shortcutFile) Then
The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings. However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.
I have the following structure:OLD: frmMain (WinForm)uscStat (UserControl with Grid) In frmMain I'm able to make some settings and load the result of the settings via LinQ into the Grid of the uscStat.
I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.
I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.
i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.
1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?
I need to call again my gameplay form after finishing 1 stage. I'm just doing the normal calling. Me.Close() then Object.Show(). (Object is the object of gameplay form). The problem is, there is a continous loop of the form its flashing. It's like it's showing then closing again ang again non stop. What should I do? Or is there another way of calling again my gameplay form?
In my SW there is a main form, inside this form there is a several controls (user controls), in any given time only one control is visible to the user, all others controls are: visible = false.
My question is how I execute several code lines when the control is shown again?
the only method I know is on the load event, but since the control is allready loaded I cant do that
my old vb6 program used to store to ini files now with .net I rekon I need to do something new.. was thinking XML but then in searching around I stumbled apon this my.settings stuff.. so I followed the instructions but something strange is going one..
1. whats the difference between the standard my.settings and adding a new class that is of settings ? anything ?
2. I made 10 new settings in the setting manager but when I try to change then it gives me the old squiggle line saying no go.
I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.
I have a gridview that is only shown in a modal popup. right before I call the modal popup I set a value in a textbox. The gridview inside the modal popup depends on that textbox's value for it's data to show up at all. SO onclick I want to reload the gridview so that it will reload with the textbox's value.
In my ASP.NET page I have a thread that runs for a while (sometimes up to 2 mins). How could I reload/ redirect the page after the thread is done? I know I can't use Response.Redirect() because the page is already done loading.
I have a session variable that changes some things about how a page looks. I have a button that changes the value of this session variable. But ... the onClick event happens after page load, so by the time I update the session variable based on the button click, it's too late, the page has already been loaded.
Theoretically I could put all the logic about changing the display into a function and call it from page load, and then call it again from the onclick after the variable as been updated. But this is impractical: there are many user controls that check the value, used on many different pages in different combinations. I would have to hard-code the list of user controls on each page, and if someone added a new user control to a particular page, they'd have to remember to update this function, which is lame.
Is there a way to force a page reload? (I can use response.redirect back to myself and it works. If all else fails I guess this is what I'll do. But it means an extra round trip to the server, which is clumsy.)
Is there a way to process the onclick before the page load?
