I am making a hangman clone for boredom and I can't seem to make the labels show up properly. Maybe I'm doing this wrong entirely and should just limit what's visible instead.

I can double click on the Setting.settings and the projects Settings grid appears in design. I change the value of a user scope setting yet when I run the application in debug it picks up a value I set initially instead of the current value of the setting.
When the app starts I set a connection string to the path of the .SDF file that I set in the Settings.settings grid and accesss it with
mRootSDFPath As
String =
My.Settings.SDFConnectionString

I search for a grand total of about four hours online for a method of how to get transparency working in labels in VB.NET 2008. After finding nothing but some example that I have no idea how to implement into my project, I have almost given up. Yes, I've heard about setting the parent properties, but in my case it is imperative that I have labels on top of a PictureBox. (Apparently it's not possible through normal means to have transparent labels over PictureBoxes.)I'm losing my patience with VB.NET, even considering switching back to VB6. How could Microsoft make such a stupid decision? Today I decided to use a stupendous workaround and instead of labels, use transparent PNGs of bitmap text. And guess what? It has the exact same problem as the labels when placed in front of controls! The transparent background has been set to the colour of the form's background!
View 5 RepliesI have a simple poker game that deals out 9 cards into pictureboxes and shows another 3 pictureboxes that hold cards for the dealer. The code itself does what I want it to...even though I'm at a dead end with writing the code further to evaluate the poker hands. I would simply like to add a few labels and a combobox to my form, but everytime I add something, or try to add it I get cast error?

I don't even know where to begin describing this. I have a project, that uses settings, for some paths, settings that I retrieve with the My.Settings. function.In my laptop, when I change the .exe.config file, the settings are updated accordingly, but when I try that on the production server, it just shows the default value used while compiling.
I tried changing the solution configurations to debug and other custom configs with no effect.Tried to use the same folder copied and pasted without version control, still the same result.Tried a co-workers laptop, by using the last svn revision, it works there too. But on neither of the servers works.
I have some System.Collections.Specialized.StringCollection 's in my.settings and the won't do anything: I have tried adding things to them and I get a null reference, now I have used these before and they worked fine I have tried reading from them, like I have in the past, and it dosen't read anything; the strings come out emtey as in one emtey string when there is three full strings

I have a application that requires access to a tablet, the tablet in order for it transfer data accurately needs to be calibrated from time to time. Users have expressed intrest that once calibration has been done and has been validated to be correct that
those new settings be ready for use in the main application. However, the only way I have been able to do this is to physically re-start the application. I have not had any luck with My.Settings.reload(). The settings I can confirm have changed but the application after saving them and calling the reload do not reload them. Am I doing something wrong? Does reload only work under certain conditions?
I am implementing a mechanism to detect a corrupt user.config file in vb at application startup.
I do this at the start of the application before initializing anything.
If an exception is thrown while trying to access it, I replace the file with a backup last known good copy.
After replacing the bad file and physically checking that we have a good file I run the code :[code...]
So, I've created a form that allows for the user to save his or her settings after closing it. When using Visual Basics to run the program, there is no problem and it works wonders.Here is the problem.When I run the program not in Visual Basics, when I go to open the form, it fails. At first, it was because I didn't update the configuration file to include the new settings. Which was dumb, of course, but I updated the file and made sure to put it with the program.

However, when I opened the program again, it failed. So, I tried putting an error message in the form so I know why it failed. This time, it would come back saying "Error Occurred. The Following Error Occurred:" and that is it. No details at all why it was having any problems reading my new user settings. Once again, the user settings work fine in visual studios. It has the updated configuration file in the same place it is.
I've updated my settings via:
My.Settings.SomeString = "new text"
then I call
My.Settings.Save()
When I check the .config file, the entry under
<userSettings>
<BE.IS.My.MySettings>
<setting name="SomeString" serializeAs="String">

I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
I am using VB.NET 2005 and running non embedded crystal reports from the SQL server and have following variables database name, server name, user name and password in the application settings editor and given the default values.
I have created a form that allows these settings to be changed by the user and the probem that I am having is that, the reports are still running with incorrect credentials. The following code runs when the user modifes the values and clicks OK button

I have created a settings-file for my plug-in-based app. When the mainApp writes the settings to the file, the pluginApp should read the settings from the settings-file (when opening or at runtime even better), but somehow it reads the settings from the app.config-file. This means that the pluginApp never will read the settings according the values of the file.
View 4 RepliesI am a beginner using 2008 Express and I am trying to get my application to remember and restore some combobox values. It seems to work fine if the application is opened and closed normally but for some reason it loses the settings if it is opened from the startup folder.
Here is how the startup link is formed:
Dim shortcutFile As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Startup) & "FBNav.lnk"
If Not IO.File.Exists(shortcutFile) Then

I saw that you can also use a "Settings File" (Add new Item)to add your settings instead of the application settings. But I can't seem to write any values to the file. Someone with experience with the "Settings1.settings"?
View 2 RepliesI set up some application settings for checkboxes on an app and then decided to remove them. When I set the Application Settings to (none) in the designer and restarted the app, the checkbox constantly checks and unchecks itself. I completely remade the app and removed the file that is used to store my.settings in the Local folder of the user's appdata profile. I also made sure to uncheck the "save my.settings" on shutdown.
View 6 RepliesI created a program that has serval labels on a form and a listview object. It has a button that when clicked reads a textfile and loads up values in the listview object. I then can click and drag text from the listview box to any label on the form and then the program removes the value from the listview box. Now, my question is how can I instruct VB to save these values in the text property of the labels so that the next time the program is loaded the labels will contain the values loaded during the last run time session?
View 1 RepliesWell im currently developing an application for public use, I have a login screen in which the user enter's their registered credential's and the progressbar loads by increments of 3, now i placed 6 labels ontop of eachother and where the progressbar coding is i put:
If Progressbar.Value >= 1 Then
Label3.Show()
If Progressbar.Value >= 20 Then
Label3.Hide()
Label4.show()
And so on up until Label8 Show at 100%,
Now the problem is... As i have placed the labels ontop of eachother i need them hidden until they are called to show, i have tried adding a background worker to do this but have had no luck, all i see is the labels overlapping eachother when i run my application when i want them hidden untill Label3.Show() is called, and then to display them as they are called and hide them when another one is called to show...
With VB, but I've got the few basics down, file naming, adding objects, naming objetcs, etc. But the reason I'm on here is because I cannot complete even the first step. Our form is 640 X 480, and we need to have two labels, both have vertical scrolls. I know how to add and resize the labels to meet my needs, but I do not know how to create scrolling labels. Or are they text boxes? On our bubble chart (Do you know what that means?) it says lblInformation. We are going to have clickable radio buttons which will update the lblInformation with info about each of the radio buttons.
View 7 RepliesI'm trying to make a program that allows the user to click on labels which have a number in it and then that value has to be stored into a different label.
For example the user click on label1 and the values goes into label12, then it click on label3 and the values goes to label13 and so on.
At the moment I can only code on the respective label underneath (1->12,2->13...) but it has to be in any order (5->12,7->13...)
Here a picture and below my code:

Private Sub Label1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Label1.Click

It appears that my favorite thing in the world is tackling projects that are beyond my current knowledge and abilities. I have a little project that I am working on which is a simple image viewer stocked with (upon completion) your standard Load..., Next/Previous, Zoom In/Out, Actual Size, and Full Screen capabilities. However, I am running into a few snags:
(1) I've been able to get my "Load..." button to display a file dialog box, but I cannot seem to get a working filter (with which only image file types are allowed to be selected) in working order.
(2) I have a PictureBox object (entitled PictureBox1) that displays the image selected via the file dialog box, but it loads images in their full size (1:1/100% zoomed) state without scrollbars, etc. to allow me to navigate the loaded image. I would like to have it load the image, initially, to fit within the dimensions of PictureBox1 and from there be able to zoom in/out via my "Zoom In/Out" and "Actual Size" buttons and be able to scroll if the zoom level is beyond the dimensions of PictureBox1.
(3) It dawned on me that I haven't the faintest idea how to get my "Next/Previous" buttons to allow the user (me) to navigate, in succession, the images contained in the folder in which the currently loaded image is stored. [code]

I want to have each row in the listview (the view mode is set to detail) have a row #. I COULD set the item text as a row #, but that's kludgy and means sorting has to be customized because the REAL item text is in subitem(1). Is there a way to have a label on each row in a listview that shows the row #?

View 8 RepliesI have the fonts needed to create barcodes and all the code written to generate them inclusive of the check digit. I have a SQL table that contains UPC codes for each item. I have searched high and low for an example in creating barcode labels and printing them however, I'm unable to find anything that does not require SDK to be purchased or mail merge in WORD etc. I need to be able to do this in VB .net for Windows. My label will have a picture of the product in the upper left hand corner of each label.
