Social Networking Website :: Way To Implement A 'user Search' In Memory (no SQL)?

I'm writing a social networking application in VB.NET, with a target userbase of 1-2 million users. All user data will be in memory in a dictionary of 'User' objects with properties such as Country, Region, Age etc exposed. I need to perform search against multiple user properties in memory - I'm not using SQL.What's the most performant way to implement a 'user search' against multiple properties?

I am new to Visual Studio and Visual Basic, but I am a revived dBase, FoxPro, Visual FoxPro, ColdFusion programmer..I'm as good once as I ever was.So I am looking for how to implement some constants for the three main reasons anyone would want to use global constants:Readability, Maintenance,Memory Usage.For example in a list of error return codes, I may assign "File Not Found" an error code of 1010.To create a constant that exists only within a procedure, declare it within that procedure.To create a constant available to all procedures within a class, but not to any code outside that module, declare it in the declarations section of the class.To create a constant that is available to all members of an assembly, but not to outside clients of the assembly, declare it using the..Friend keyword in the declarations section of the class.To create a constant available throughout the application, declare it using the Public keyword in the declarations section [of] the class. global it is visible to all procedures and modules that comprise the application. Global variables and constants, as with Module level variables, must be declared outside of any procedures in the Declarations section and must use the Public keyword.The language above stating "Global variables and constants, as with Module level variables..." insinuates to me that Global Constants and Module Level constants are different, thus having different scopes.
And I have yet to see ANYWHERE that tells me to put stuff in the Declarations Section of a class or program or application, tell me just WHERE the declarations section actually IS! They always give the code of how to declare (I can do this...) but they don't say where the code GOES.I know I am overlooking the simplest of things, but just trying to be very sure of what I am doing.[code]

I downloaded nUnit and TestDriven.net. I have a legacy Web Site application and I would like to implement some unit testing. I created a class in the app_code folder and added Imports NUnit.Framework etc... After writing a basic test, I get the "Can't execute tests in 'Web Site' application." error. I guess the Web Site project is not supported. Converting to a Web Application is not an option at this time. I have Visual Studio Test Edition, so I tried that route. I created a test project, wrote a couple tests in my test class etc... only to find out I cannot reference the classes in the app_code folder of the Web Site project.

I was asked to develop a simple application to handle car inventory. Each car has a LOT of properties (about 130, like license plate number, type, was it serviced, etc.). Some of these properties are represented by bit data type in a database some are varchar.
The problem is that I need to provide search functionality for any of all these properties and any combination of them. This results in a search form with about 130 controls. I certainly do not want to put the SQL query together manually by checking the state of each and every control. To propagate the problem further I need to be able to search for partial strings as well (i.e. if the user enters "porsc" into the car brand field then all Porsches should be found).

it is clear that an Object handling an event has to unregister himself of that event before it ends, to avoid not been cleared from the memory by the CG - especially when it lives longer than the "Event Raiser" object. But, on the other hand, I wonder if it is possible to encounter this problem on the web server... Is it possible that the server will keep this object alive, even if the execution context (i.e. the web session) has died? Are'nt all the objects related to a session cleared with the session itself?

I have a search function in my app which is a groupbox with a textbox that contains the search keyword and a couple of radiobuttons. Do I have to create a keydown event for every single radiobutton and textbox? Or is there a better way? I tried making a keydown event for the groupbox but that didn't work.

Im using wikipedia and want related searches to pop in a listbox that the user can look at as well. If anyone has some insight of where to start that would be awesome. I tried getting the heading of the main searched topic by referencing the titles of the website but that ended quickly with many boundaries.

In my form, I have textbox + combobox to enter datas which are saved to ms access. I have search option too. Also i have DataGrid to show the result of the search. What I want now is, 1. To show the search result in the textbox/combox as well (I already am able to make the result show on datagrid)2. When there are multiple result showing on DataGrid, if i click on a particular result on DataGrid, let the textbox/combobox automatically loads the details of the one i clicked.

I've just started developing web applications for the first time. Im developing an ASP.Net Website. Ive started transferring code over from my windows application and found a few errors. In my windows application I had a search function in a form where on click the text in a text box would search the first list box and print any matches in the second list box. [code] In my website an error pops up highlighting the line "words = lstSearch1.Items.Item(a)" and says that the value of the list item cannot be converted to string. How do I go about fixing this or is there a different way of implementing a search function in an Asp.Net website?

I have a website that has highly granulised access and hence requires many web.config files. The problem is I would like to trim the menu so that only certain users will have access to certain folders. I have enabled trimming and setup roles in the sitemap, however when I access the page the menu is not show, as I am authorized to view the default page which is not in a subfolder. When I type the url of a page in sub folder's I have access.
How should I handle this:

I am trying to implement facebook like button on my website. The first four lines in the code is already there on my site after the end of the "" tag.

Basically I am doing a weekly assignment for unit 7 where I have to use Data bases.... I have everything going fine I used VB studio to set up most of my relationships between the Data base and VB.I have a text box called txtLast4OfSSN.Text that I need to get the last 4 of a social security number.
Now this should be simple I have another box ( a Masked Box for SSN) that has the SSN in it... This box is called m_SSN.Text....... Now I figured it would be easy, and that I could just use the Substring(7, 10) to get those numbers :*( However its not working and I am getting an error as follows:"Index and length must refer to a location within the string. I have designing a desktop application using VB.NET 2008 & SQL Server 2005.In my Application i have a frmUserRegistration to add a user & frmLogin to login to my application.i can add the user details in the database but my password seems to be in characters.Login form also works using my method. BUT MY PROBLEM IS THAT I DONT KNOW HOW TO STORE THE USER PASSWORD IN ENCRYPTED MANNER TO THE SQL DATABASE AND DECRYPT THE PASSWORD WHEN USER LOGIN TO MY APPLICATION.

I am currently working on a project for school in which I am trying to implement a multi user login on one of my forms. I have an internal database connected in which one of my tables contains the user-names and passwords. I have a For/each loop to search the table for a matching username/password before allowing access to next form. The problem is even if the username/password is correct, my message box still appears to notify of invalid credentials, but still allows access to other form. The problem only occurs when I implement two For/each loops. With one, code works fine. Can any one see what might be wrong?
