I store three items in My.Settings. One is a serialized string, and the other two are GUIDs. When the main form starts, those three items are loaded into various places. On rare, and so far unpredictable, occasions, one of these GUIDs is notably absent. The others may or may not be, I have yet to be able to check. Since it happens so infrequently (twice this month, though I have been working on the code every day), I'm having a very hard time tracking down the problem. However, it got me wondering where these values are stored. I see one of them showing up in App.Config, though without a value. Is there a place I can see the others?

View 6 RepliesI have just added a login form to my main form which just has a username textbox and a password textbox. What i basically want a user to be able to do is enter their username and password into these fields and then for the form to store the values there.
So if they enter their username and password, and then click OK on the login form, if they were to open up the login form their details would still be there?I want to be able to call on these values else where? How do i store the info in the username and password fields? And if they then closed the form and opened it up again would it still remember what username and password had been entered?
I am making a video conversion tool. I have a listview with one item per file. And i also have options to add subtitles to movies. I want it to be like this:Say the user add 2 movies. He select the first movie in the listview and then go to the subtitle tab beside. There he checks a checkbox so he can add subtitles. Some controls comes up that allows he to browse for subtitle and select which language the subtitle is. Then when he has selected these options, he select the other movie, the program saves the subtitle data somewhere and then erases all fields so he can fill them with a subtitle for the other movie.
My.Settings is way to simple for this. But i don't want SQL or db related stuff. Is there a good storing way i have missed?

I would like to know how to make it so that when someone logs in to my program. MySQL takes their info and loads them into My.Settings Like MySQL Username(Their username on the table. Not the mysql username) = My.settings.username MySQL Amount of money = My.settings.money MySQL Level = My.settings.level
View 4 RepliesI am trying to learn VB.NET and I've written a user entry screen to store and retrieve information. I keep getting this error. I understand that I have to either change the ref value from the calling code, but my problem is where is the calling code? Here is the error I'm getting (the program is underscoring udtTrans in the FileGet line in this segment).
Private Sub viewRecords()
'open the file and read fields of the first record into the textboxes
Try
FileOpen(1, strFilename, OpenMode.Random, OpenAccess.ReadWrite, OpenShare.Shared, Len(udtTrans))
FileGet(1, udtTrans, intCurrentRecord) 'gets first record

I am trying to come up with a way to store 3 pieces of information for each employee in the company on a daily basis. So for instance:
Day 1: Joe, 8, 80
Day 2: Sam, 10, 90
Day 3: Bill, 5, 40
Day 4: Bob, 8, 40
Day 5: Sue, 2, 50
I am very new to collections and most of the applications that I build are Create, Read, Update and Delete type applications that don't really need arrays so I have almost no experience with either.
This is what I have so far.
VB

Dim iDays As Integer = NumberDaysPerMonth(Date. Now)
Dim DayNumber(iDays) As Integer
Dim EmployeeRecords As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)
For i = 1 To DayNumber.Count - 1

I am writing a program that lets someone click on a picture to vote for their favorite pet. The part I am stuck at is: when the application is opened and closed it needs to remember how many votes there were. To do so, when the program is closed I have the information stored in a .txt file. it looks something to the effect of:
name, type, votes
andy, bear, 0
bart, dog, 0
candy, cat, 0
hopsie, bunny, 0

know open an xml file into a datagrid. The xml file is stored in a secured ftp with username and password. Just as an example if the site ftp.mysitesite.com, with username "xxx" and the password "XXX" has the file 123.xml, then how do I load 123 into a datagrid. Is it possible to store these info to a variable in app.Config and use that variable to access the site?

I am wriing a vb.net windows application to log and store information. then display it in a sortable multiple column listbox (I personally like FlexGrid by Component One). However... I am not sure how to go about storing the information. Should I go with a .sdf file database, registry, simply storing them in a file, or some other method?
What I need is to be able to:
read/write/delete from it
read possibly up to a 20mb file and sorting it without a lot of lag
be transported to multiple systems and maintain these writes (installed on many systems)
I know I could split up the reading/writing to anther thread. Even to other .DLL's and whatnot. But as for storing. Not sure what the best option is.
Is there a way I can store HUGE strings without using settings? Or storing it outside the program?

You know how using My.Settings.something to store persistent data is done only for user settings and not application settings. This information is stored in the registry on the local user section. My problem here is that even if it is in the same machine, when a user changes some setting it is not reflected on other users. This is desirable for some of them but there are a few I would like to keep for all users. Is there a way to do it with the settings? Do I need to write to the registry in the machine section? or do you just recomend I create a configuration file?
View 5 Repliesi need to store Application wide Settings in my Application like:
Connection to DB (Servername) Username/Password Registrar/Serial etc. I think there are basically two Options:
Store them in the Registry Store them in an Application Settings File Using one of the methods above is no problem, but under Windows 7 my Application running in normal user mode allows me only to store user specific data. For example inside UserAppDataRegistry, UserAppDataPath etc.
But when i want to use e.g. CommonAppDataRegistry to write my Data in, then i get no access to it, due to missing privileges.
Now my question:
Where and how to store Application Wide Data? How are others doing this? When i purchase an application and install it on my pc, it asks me for Uusername and Serial. When i insert it then it saves it somewhere without asking me for Administrative Privileges or something else.
I have a license form that i wish to save the information or just system wide information for that matter,I know about the my.Settings - however this will only save for a specific user and the aplpication scope you can not write to.Where is the best place or the normal practice of saving application wide information?
View 7 RepliesI want to store additional information about a listview item using a custom class, but I can't seem to get it to work.I'm currently using this code to accomplish something similar using a listbox item.I just want to do the same thing with a listview.
Public Class myListboxItem
Public id As String
Public rootFolder As String[code]....
I forgot to add "Inherits ListViewItem" to my class.I'll update the code listed here to serve as an example for others.
I'm working on a project right now that basically prints a string to the field that has focus in internet explorer and there's quite a bit of user specified information that needs to load when the vb program loads. Should I use a text file to store and retrieve the settings or a database? I'm a new programmer and I don't really have a clear idea on when I should use a text file compared to a database or the registry to store info. Also, if I use a database like access 2007 for example, wouldn't an end user run into an exception if they don't have that software installed on their comp? Is there a universal database format? I've linked some screenshots of the prog if you want to get an idea of how much info I need to store.

View 2 RepliesI am developing an application, and i need to store some configuration settings, with time, i will need to add some more configuration settings. View 2 RepliesI've written a windows service in VB.NET 2.0 and the service needs to know a few file paths and other settings when it starts in order to be able to do what its supposed to do. These are settings that users of my service need to be able to configure themselves so I cant hard code them in.At the moment I just have the service look for a file named Config.INI in the same directory that it is being run from and if this file exists it attempts to read the settings in from there... this works perfectly, but it just feels a bit clunky and old. If it was a normal windows app I would store the settings in an XML file in the user's application data folder or something but as this is a Service then thats not possible as it is not run by any one user (well technically it is, the Local System account). I then thought about using the registry but I seem to recall people saying that you should avoid storing settings in the registry if you can really, especially with the new security in Vista and Server 2008.
View 6 RepliesI'm wanting to store some settings for my program in an XML document. I've found plenty of places that allow you to write an XML document to somewhere on the hard drive although I'm wanting to link it in with the project so when the program installs it setups up the XML as well. This is also so when the program uninstalls it removes the XML.So I was wondering how I would go about writing to the XML document in my project, could it be done with Linq?

View 4 RepliesI have created 3 classes which inherits from(System.Collections.Specialized.NameObjectCollectionBase)
The first class "SQLCommandsCollection" stores "SQLCommands" in a collection.
The second class "SQLTableNamesCollection" stores "SQLCommandsCollection" objects in its collection. The Third class "SQLDBNamesCollection" stores "SQLTableNamesCollection" objects in its collection.
Ultimately I will sit with a "SQLDBNamesCollection" collection which contains all Table names and its respective SQLCommand objects.
I would like to store this "SQLDBNamesCollection" object in my.settings("QueryViewerQueriesPerTableNamePerDBName")
at runtime but I am unsure what this settings type should be.
I have tried system.oject but this does not seem to work as I get an "Unable to cast object of type 'System.String' to type 'Fusion.SQLTableNamesCollection'" exception when I try to retrieve from settings. See below code.
